  3. ---
  4. Homework: read an article about a political/social view that you know you will disagree with
  5. As you’re reading, write questions or comments that you can imagine having for the author.
  6. (Be prepared to briefly explain the topic and your questions tomorrow in class.)
  7. ---
  8. Take 5 minutes to preview/skim the “Hackers” article - what is the main problem it talks about? how widespread is the problem? are there solutions?
  9.
  10. 471,000 hackable automobiles
  11.
  12. “Congress takes on car hacking” - what would you expect to read about in this section?
  13. (Congress is the group of people who make laws in the United States.)
  14. (“take on” = to fight with a new opponent in a competition)
  15. Congress can make regulations for automotive companies about software security.
  16. ---
  17. Steps for skimming/previewing a reading:
  18. 1 Read the title of the article
  19. 2 Read the first sentence of the article, match its topic with the title
  20. 3 Read section headings (“Wireless Carjackers”, “471,000 Hackable Automobiles”, and “Congress takes on car hacking”), and predict the kind of information you will find in each section
  21. 4 Check for a conclusion or summary of the text at the end of the article/essay.
  22. ---
  23. If you have specific questions to answer, you should be able to guess which section to find those answers after step 3. Look at the first sentence of each paragraph to figure out which paragraph has that information.
  24. ---
  25. Homework (seriously this time): read an article about a political/social view that you know you will disagree with
  26. As you’re reading, write questions or comments that you can imagine having for the author.
  27. (Be prepared to briefly explain the topic and your questions tomorrow in class.)
  28. (see p. 76 (184) - “Talk with the author.”)
