  1. Changing Stripes
  2. by
  3. Jamie Ryder
  4. “Hey, Jamie. At least you're alive. Look at it that way.”
  5. The loud beeps of the machines wanted to disagree with
  6. the masculine voice. So too did the voice on the television,
  7. giving the latest news about the attack that caused all of
  8. these changes. Jamie just groaned in response. Sometimes her
  9. friend, Brad, could be an ass.
  10. “You're healthy too. Can't forget that.”
  11. “Am I, Brad?” My life just changed. My body changed too.
  12. Both quite dramatically. Am I still me? And healthy? For all
  13. we know, I could have cancer.”
  14. “I agree.”
  15. The two turned to stare at the voice, not expecting
  16. anyone else for the time being. Fumbling through the various
  17. documents stood a tall, proud looking and older rhino. As a
  18. nurse passed and gave him another folder, he sighed. The
  19. doctor turned his attention back to the two in the room with a
  20. sheepish smile.
  21. “Sorry. I meant I agree with your friend. You are as
  22. healthy and alive as any female skunk can be. You should be
  23. lucky. “
  24. “Um, that's great and all Doc. But I wasn't born female
  25. or a skunk.”
  26. Today's terrorist attack reminds us that
  27. The only other source of speaking, the speech by the
  28. governor and then the president, was shut off by Brad. Other
  29. than the beeps of the heart monitor the only noise was
  30. shuffling of papers and the faint opening then closing of
  31. folders as the doctor tried to figure out where things went
  32. wrong. Brad moved closer to Jamie, holding one of her hands.
  33. Her chests heaved in anxiety, worried that the paperwork was
  34. fudged and that her life was over.
  35. “Doc, she did rescue a little girl today. The EMTs
  36. musta”
  37. “I see. Yes. Yes. They did. My mistake. I see now that
  38. you were a victim of today's attack. Yes, saved a little girl
  39. from being near the blast. Got most of it. That definitely
  40. explains the transformation, Miss er Mister Ryder.”
  41. Jamie nodded, finally letting go of her breathe. Though
  42. she'd have to get used to Miss soon, hearing Mister at least
  43. one last time melted her eyes into a reassuring
  44. halfliddedness. The doctor patted her shoulder gently as he
  45. checked her vitals one more time, to confirm the readouts from
  46. the machine.
  47. “I wish I could say I'd seen worse given the Gene War,
  48. but I haven't. What they did was deplorable. Still, Miss
  49. Ryder—get used to it—you ARE indeed healthy. The machines and
  50. I both cannot find a single thing wrong with you despite your
  51. mutations.”
  52. “It's all good. Does this mean I can go home? My puppy
  53. needs me.”
  54. The doctor chuckled. Even in this day and age, people
  55. were more concerned with their pets and children than
  56. themselves he noticed. "Nothing has changed," Dr. Jeffries
  57. muttered to himself. As he checked her heartbeat, the doctor
  58. shook his head.
  59. “Oh no. I'm afraid not. The state and federal government,
  60. out of concern for your safety,” the way he said it indicated
  61. sarcasm to her upright ears, “ordered us to keep you at least
  62. overnight if not longer. To make sure you're healthy of
  63. course.”
  64. Jamie gave an exasperated noise as she crossed her four
  65. arms under her four breasts and huffed, eliciting a laugh from
  66. Brad.
