  1. Welcome to Arithmancy! For the our first lesson, we are going delve into the rich history of Arithmancy before learning the details of how it works. Arithmancy is a discipline that studies the magical properties of numbers, including predicting the future with numbers and numerology. Those who practice Arithmancy are called Arithmancers. There are several notable Arithmancers throughout history. One of these Arithmancers is Bridget Wenlock. Wenlock is the archetypal example; she was a celebrated witch who first discovered the magical properties of the number seven in the 13th century. In modern numerological terminology, arithmancy is a form of divination based on assigning numerical value to a word or phrase, by means of a simplified version of ancient Greek isopsephy or Hebrew/Aramaic gematria, as adapted to the Latin alphabet. Arithmancy is associated with the Chaldeans, Platonists, Pythagoreans, and the Kabbalah. I know it is a lot to take in, so I hope you’ve been taking notes! Please move on to the homework when you are ready.
