- Aim: To Detemine if organisms will spontainoulsy generate from non living organic molecules in broth
- Hypothis: The broth with the straight tube will develope organisims however the bent flasked broth will not
- Theory: In the 1800's pasteur tested the validity of a widly accpeted theory of spontanious generation of organisms without parental organisms. In doing so he hoped to determine the cause of microbacterial growth on foods (ie cheese)
- Equitment:
- 2x conical flask 400-500mL
- 2x Rubber stoppers with holes to suit glass tubes and 400-500mL flasks
- 2x Glass tubes 20cm length x 1cm or < diameter
- 200mL chiken broth
- 1x Bunsen burner
- 1x tripod
- 1x gauze matt
- 1x tongs
- Method:
- Collect equitment
- Place 100mL of broth in each flask
- Set up bunsen burner
- Heat up and melt 1 glass tube into an S shape allowing enoguh space for the tube in the flask
- Place glass tubes into rubber stoppers
- Pour 100mL of broth into each flask using mesuring cylinder
- Place stoppers with tubes inside of the flasks
- set up tripod and gauze mat
- heat flasks untill broth starts boiling
- boil broth for 5 minutes to steralise it
- Allow flasks to cool and place in a location where they will not be disturbed for 2 weeks
- Record observations every 2 days
- Repeat experiment to confirm observations and results
