  10. It is very important to play Chrono Trigger before reading these explanations!
  11. It will be very difficult to explain Chrono Cross without Chrono Trigger!

  20. The lore of Chrono Cross is that the development of humanity as a species was tainted by the arrival of Lavos to our planet!
  21. A little piece of its shell was broken off when it landed, and this became a very powerful artifact called the Frozen Flame.
  22. It is responsible for many things, but most importantly the evolution of humans!(edited)
  23. It is very important to realize this, because the story of Chrono Cross emphasizes that the planet does not consider human beings natural inhabitants of itself!
  24. In the very far future, after it has been saved by the work of the heroes of Chrono Trigger, a very smart scientist known as Belthasar uses it to build a city.
  25. The city is not built of the Frozen Flame, but powered by it!

  31. In his efforts to save Schala from a terrible fate, Belthasar experiments with the Frozen Flame. But unfortunately this causes a little bit of silliness.
  32. The city of Chronopolis is sent far into the past!
  33. The planet is very upset that this has happened, and it calls upon an advanced city of dinosaurs from an alternative future to put a stop to Chronopolis and Belthasar!

  42. But Chronopolis has jet planes, and other advanced technology, and wins the war against the dinosaurs, and their dragon god.
  43. The dragon god is split up into many different parts by the computer that controls Chronopolis, known as FATE.
  44. In order to avoid a very scary time paradox, FATE creates a tiny archipelago, and sends the scientists of Chronopolis to live upon it.
  45. It secretly encourages the people of this archipelago not to leave, or this could cause a paradox that prevents FATE from existing!
  46. All things move according to FATE’s plan, until one day a tiny child named Serge is attacked by a panther demon!

  69. And now, only he can access its power.
  70. This is very distressing to FATE, of course!
  71. It kidnaps Serge’s father, and brainwashes him.
  72. And transforms him into the image of a panther demon, because this would be very scary to Serge!
  73. Serge’s father, in a fit of madness, drowns Serge.

  93. Using the power of the Dragon Tear, a relic of the defeated dinosaurs, FATE enacts a very complex plan for Serge to switch bodies with his brainwashed father.
  94. It succeeds in this plan!

  100. Serge is trapped in his father-turned-panther’s body, and FATE once again has access to the Frozen Flame.
  101. But after a very long adventure, Serge creates the Chrono Cross from the shattered Dragon Tear, and is reborn in a new body!
  102. And with the blessing of the six dragons to help him, he fights and defeats FATE.
  103. Only, it is very unfortunate for everyone to realize that it was FATE’s power that kept the dragon god separated into smaller dragons.
  104. They reform themselves into the dragon god, and threaten to wipe out all of humanity!
  105. Serge defeats this dragon god, of course.
