- EDIT: OK NEVER MIND I WATCHED THE TRAILER IT LOOKS FUN I'M EXCITED
- ----
- Just saw the name "The Rise of Skywalker" for Episode IX. I have seen nothing else about the film to this point - no interviews, no commentary, and not the trailer. All I have to go on is that name. I don't like the name, and I want to just vomit all my initial reactions up all over the place.
- Why write it? Because I'm having a hard day separately from all this, and venting about something silly like a movie feels like a nice release. Also, I really hope I'm *wrong* about all of it - I want the movie to be awesome and blow me away. But these are my concerns....
- Wasn't Episode 1 the rise of Skywalker?
- What about Episode 2 - certainly that was the rise of Skywalker.
- Episode 3 was definitely the *fall* of Skywalker.
- Episode 4 brought us the rise of *another* Skywalker!
- With Episode 5, we learned more about Skywalkers!
- Episode 6 was the rise of that original Skywalker!!!
- Episode 7 teased us with an awakening - could it be another Skywalker?!
- Episode 8 said NO! DEFINITELY NOT! Let's kill off the Skywalkers
- So this title seems to completely ignore what's come before. It very obviously is completely going against everything Episode 8 told us we shoulk thing about Skywalkers. Which, sure, a very loud and angry portion of the internet would love! But it would highlight for me the greatest failure of this trilogy so far: lack of vision. If they really just completely undo everything that 8 did, it will appear to be a complete response to fan backlash. Which again, shows no vision. 8's discarding of 7's key beats felt like a like of vision. This feels just as bad.
- So which Skywalker is rising?! Kylo Ren coming back to Ben Solo? Is Rey ACTUALLY a Skywalker? What about Luke... you killed him off!! (a move I actually had no problem with, actually) The way I can see it going that could *work* is if somehow the "Skywalker" that rises here is *Anakin Skywalker* himself. This whole story was about him from the beginning. Bring him back, tie all 9 pieces together, and end HIS story.
- But if they're trying to do some weird, abstract, "a true Skywalker can come from *anywhere*!!" thing - then I'm sorry, but that's garbage. It's a fine, inspiring message, but it doesn't work here. Luke was already an inspiring character. So was Leia. Even Anakin, for his part. We had great, inspiring characters with the *specific Skywalkers that we already knew!* Making some sort of ridiculous "the real Skywalker is inside all of us! Let's rise!" thing completely disregards the reasons that the stories which already happened were so good.
- So here's hoping that I'm wrong! Here's hoping that this movie does a great job of wrapping it all up, putting a bow on things, and showing us that there was a vision all along....
- Ok. Time to quit my whining and actually go watch the trailer.
