- "Did you use any particular settings for that grain retention? (even the mini encode seem almost visually lossless compared to hevc) or just default settings and low preset do the trick"

- All the settings I used are in the mediainfo of the file, I didnt use any special trick or filtering in this case, I just set the correct combination of settings (especially crf, quantization matrices and grain). Consider that the film grain synthesis is one of the strong points of AV1: av1 denoises the video extremely well and then saves into the file the infos for the decoder to play a layer of grain over the video; the amount of grain is specified by both the level of grain u have set and the noise of the source in every scene (In fact this grain can be removed from the video in a second with a single command with grav1synth, which is in the 'Ω info.txt' file of each of my torrents that contain a folder; I use this command to de-grain the video to calculate SSIMU2 more accurately). One caveat that I feel the need to add is that when u are targeting high quality releases u need to use the few correct crf values that avoid to blur the details while still denoising the source in the best way possible. Also, I noticed that, with grain values higher than ~10, I have smoother grain only with temporally filter enabled (which is actually the default). Regarding your mention of the presets instead, the very low preset helps in retaining details (especially in the dark or fast moving scenes) and often in saving space. Personally I advise to avoid using presets different than -1 and 2 (higher presets are allowed if necessary cause of reasons ofc, but will strongly hurt the quality at 1080p, while presets 1 and 0 arent that useful in my experience and actually often "worse" than 2). If u are interested in more infos/advices I would strongly recommend to join our discord server as it has veery capable ppl.
