  1. “Can I just say that this is both completely unexpected and extremely hurtful?” Said Iago, his back to the assembled group.
  2. “I reckon you just did.” Was the Captain's reply, “Now, in your own time.”
  3. He looked back over his shoulder, “I mean, most of you I understand, but young Runcray-”
  4. “Just walk the damn plank with some dignity, Montelo.”
  5. “You said to go in my own time!”
  6. “You've run out.” Captain Valiance planted a foot on the end of the plank and pulled it back sharply, letting Iago's back collide with her open palm, sending him tumbling into the water below. After an appropriate amount of head-shaking and indrawn breaths, the Captain lamented “Honestly, I replace his crew one at a time, I dope his grog supply with more and more whisky, and he doesn't suspect a thing. Doesn't even have the decency to die with some dignity. What kind of a captain do you call that, honestly?” There was a grumble of agreement, “Show's over, back to work, get this plank of the deck and get us moving, we make port in Dragonsheart by midnight!”
  7. “Yes, Captain!” The crew chorused as they set to work, milling around her.
  8. “Where is young Runcray, anyway?” Resmi cast her eyes across the deck.
  9.
  10. In the choppy waves being left behind by the Ocean's Mist, former Captain Iago Montelo deliberated at length over which of his heavy items of gold jewellery could be cast off.
  11. He wondered if it might be worth fiddling to get the ear-stud off.
  12. “Captain!”
  13. “Runcray?” Iago swished around to face the source of the noise, a young man treading water, “What are you doing here?”
  14. “Saving your life, Captain Montelo, sir!” Runcray ripped off a wet salute. “I'm quite a strong swimmer.” He explained.
  15. “Okay, good, because I am really going to have to start sinking now.”
  16.
  17. Iago woke up as he slapped wetly on the deck of The Black Prime. He staggered to his feet and smiled in relief, “Eddie!” He looked around the deck and noticed the crew and his friend's hat, “Sorry, Captain Black.”
  18. “You know I'm not much for captaining, Iago.” Edward removed his hat and offered it to Iago, “Always been more of a first mate.”
  19. “Thank you kindly, mate.” Iago took the hat and put it atop his head in a smooth, round motion. He noticed the brooding dark-haired woman leaning against the main mast, “Prymaria, you're looking radiant as always.”
  20. “I can't believe you're giving command of the ship to him.” She addressed this to her husband.
  21. “He's my greatest friend!”
  22. “He left you to die.”
  23. “The best blade on the seven seas? I left him to kill, that's what I did. I knew he'd have no trouble with a mere dozen men.” Iago smiled a golden smile.
  24. “No trouble? He lost an eye!”
  25. Iago snapped his fingers, “That's what's different!”
  26. “Yup.” Edward nodded.
  27. “The eyepatch suits you.”
  28. “Thanks.”
  29. Prymaria seethed, “Well, don't you have some directions, Captain?”
  30. “Yes, yes I do. We'll be sailing towards Dragonsheart until we get, oh, about two miles off the coast.” Iago began walking towards the Captain's cabin.
  31. “We don't have nearly the manpower or the equipment to raid Dragonsheart!” Prymaria protested.
  32. “No, but I know someone who does.” Iago grinned as he opened the door, “And they've got my boat.”
