  1. 01[20:26] <~zoofman> Last time on Crystal Crusade, silly, silly things happened. Things involving broom elementals and head maids. Since then, things have quieted down in this old, haunted Palace.
  2. 01[20:28] <~zoofman> As the day progressed, the halls slowly became darker, as the blue braizers proved poor for illuminating rooms, as much as marking paths like signal fires between batches of darkness. You find yourself not far off from where we left off, near a collection of rooms that are well decored and preserved, with a grand staircase leading upward.
  3. [20:30] <Gelato> (Zoof, what happened to me after i drank ghost beer?)
  4. 01[20:31] <~zoofman> Well, let's just say Gelato emptied the keg when no one was looking, he's still phantasmic, unlike Mitzi, whose faded back to normal, passed out with a collection of books she snagged.

  6. 01[20:32] <~zoofman> (Mitzi has some of it stored somewhere, if I recall)
  7. 01[20:32] <~zoofman> (there were also a few other kegs sitting around near the entrance.)

  10. 01[20:34] <~zoofman> As you sit around a spacius bed chamber, a cold wind blows down from the upper chambers of the palace. The braizers that illuminate the path to the staircase flicker. Awareness checks.

  25. 01[20:39] <~zoofman> Harphe, Gelato, and Rosette, you notice something odd about the pitch of the draft. It doesn't -sound- like you'd expect a gust of air through an enclosed space to sound like. It's too mellow, not a shrill sound.

  27. 06[20:41] * Harphe looks around, trying to find the place where the gust is getting in.
  28. [20:41] <Syl> "Unusual for a normal location. For a place possessed, however...."
  29. [20:42] <Gelato> "Perhaps more ghost musicians?"
  30. [20:42] <Harphe> "Anything is possible."
  31. 01[20:42] <~zoofman> The gust pauses, briefly, and then a second one descends. It's...more chilling than the first.
  32. 06[20:43] * Harphe shivers, pulling her cloak more tightly closed.
  33. [20:43] <Rosette> "Hm...I believe there is an unnatural presence among us," Rossete says with concern.
  34. [20:43] <Syl> "Reveal thyself."
  35. [20:43] <Syl> Her tone is solid and commanding.
  36. [20:44] <Alvis> "Oh... more phantoms?" Alvis finally seems to snap himself out of his state.
  37. [20:44] <Gelato> "You'd guess my current state would let me see more of those creatures, hmm?"
  38. 06[20:44] * Gelato shrugs.
  39. [20:44] <Harphe> "Ah, so we are. I don't believe we ever attempted to hide ourselves."
  40. [20:44] <Harphe> "Why don't you show yourself?"
  41. [20:45] <Syl> 2d6+3 if they won't show, I'll find them myself

  43. [20:48] <Harphe> "It is, of course, rather rude to speak to someone without making your presence known."
  44. [20:48] <Gelato> "I could freeze this entire room. That would rat 'em out, hmm?"
  45. 01[20:49] <~zoofman> A third gust comes, longer than the first two, just as chilling as the second. And more clear, a quiet, almost sweet whisper. "You've banished my guards, harassed my servants, stolen from my library, and vandelized my possessions. Still you remain. Fine, you'll have your meeting. Proceed. My servants will not impeed you farther."
  46. [20:49] <Rosette> "I...don't think that would work."
  47. [20:50] <Rosette> "Hm? Very well, then," she repsonds to voice warily.
  48. [20:50] <Alvis> "Stole things? Never!" Alvis chimes back, as though that's not lying through his teeth.
  49. [20:51] <Syl> "All of which misses the greater purpose."
  50. 06[20:51] * Gelato shrugs while heading further. "Which is to get rid of some haunting spirits."
  51. [20:51] <Syl> "We seek the end of the storm."
  52. [20:51] <Syl> "....and we will bring it to you, if we must."
  53. [20:52] <Harphe> "I've certainly never stolen anything."
  54. 06[20:52] * Harphe puffs up with INDIGNATION.
  55. 01[20:52] <~zoofman> The wind settles, but not without a last, little fluttering burst, like a taunting laugh. And then silence, aside from the crackle of the phantasmic flames of the braziers.
  56. [20:53] <Alvis> "Well, guess that means we should go meet her, huh?"
  57. [20:53] <Rosette> "That would be wise, if she truly is the one behind this storm."
  58. [20:53] <Harphe> "And if not, I imagine she would know who is."
  59. 06[20:54] * Syl walks down the path marked by the braziers, eager to end this foolishness.
  60. 06[20:55] * Harphe hurries after Syl.
  61. 01[20:57] <~zoofman> The path leads you up an elegant staircase, and down a dark, barely illuminated path. At some points the halls are dark enough that only the light of the braizers themselves can be seen.
  62. [20:58] <Gelato> "Nice decoration, although how the braziers stayed lit for millenia... Must be some powerful magic, hoohoo!"
  63. 01[20:58] <~zoofman> At some points, you can see phantasmic figures peering through half open doors, curious to see these guests. They dart away into the darkness if your eyes meet, however.
  64. [20:59] <Rosette> "Tres magnifique, but...it feels vile," she says, observing the scenery
  65. 06[21:01] * Alvis , by comparison, seems to be getting a little... excited?
  66. 01[21:01] <~zoofman> The pathway ends at a circular antechamber. Braizers outline the room, with two collosal, mahogony doors on the far end. A faint, blue light creeps through the cracks.
  67. 06[21:02] * Harphe knocks on the door. It's only polite.
  68. [21:03] <Syl> "Reveal thyself," she repeats.
  69. [21:03] <Syl> "For long enough to have a chat, at least."
  70. 01[21:04] <~zoofman> "Enter, Outsiders," says a voice. Confident, youthful, feminin.
  71. [21:04] <Syl> "You seem quite sure of yourself, considering the fate of your servants."
  72. [21:05] <Harphe> "Let's not taunt the lady of the house, shall we?"
  73. 06[21:05] * Harphe enters.
  74. [21:06] <Rosette> "Greetings," Rosette speaks, neither warmly nor hostily, simply greeting the presence.
  75. 01[21:07] <~zoofman> The doors slide forward, creeking with age, and you enter a throne room.
  76. 06[21:07] * Gelato examines the phantom court around them, trying to discern, do they really follow the strange caste rules that Mien told about earlier?
  77. 06[21:07] * Alvis enters with curiosity and a little bit of the jitters. This... actually feels like a genuine adventure now oh god
  78. 01[21:09] <~zoofman> Golden, decorative columns and large blue braizers. Elaborate, handwoven rugs line the wooden floor. At the far end sits a raised platform, with a throne of ice. "Come, let me gaze upon the first visitors to Xi'an in three centuries," says the being who sits upon it.

  80. 01[21:12] <~zoofman> She sits with a practiced, rigid formality. Skin pale as snow, sharp, turquoise eyes. Long silver hair, obviously a member of the same race as the fire spirit. A glacial crown rested upon her head.
  81. 06[21:13] * Gelato is awestruck. "An Ice Queen. I must say, such beauty makes the heart of an old fool like me beat like i was forty again!"
  82. [21:14] <Harphe> "A pleasure to meet you, madam." Harphe curtsies. "You wouldn't happen to know anything of the storm outside your palace, would you?"
  83. 01[21:20] <~zoofman> She slowly traces eyes each of you. "An Empress I once was. Born of peasents, crowned at birth, loved by the common folk. But I was young, born after a time of seemingly endless strife and conflict. I was...ignorant of how to resolve actions set in place before my time."
  84. 01[21:21] <~zoofman> She looks to Harphe, a sharp gaze. "A humorous question. You stand before its progenitor."
  85. [21:21] <Alvis> Alvis watches her carefully, trying to avoid licking his lips due to the fact that this is potentially a very dangerous situation. "So... why'd you make it, anyway?"
  86. [21:22] <Rosette> "Indeed, why would you create something like that, if it is not too much to ask?"

  88. [21:23] <Gelato> "Perhaps she wanted to make the place more beautiful? Hooho, i jest of course."
  89. 01[21:23] <~zoofman> She slowly looks to Alvis. "You are not of the Jing Xian, but your lineage seems to share a common route, child. Most...curious. You are indeed Outsiders to this land." She takes a breath before answering.
  90. 01[21:26] <~zoofman> "I came to rule in a time of great propserity for the land of Rhawoza. A hundred year war between all the nations and races of the realm had resolved in a mutual agreement on all fronts. A peace agreement. Borders were opened, trade and information prospered through the lands and the people. The studies of alchemy, science, magistry and engineering found common place at last."
  91. 01[21:30] <~zoofman> She takes another deep breath, closing her eyes briefly. "These studies, however, were without limit or understanidng. And one day, the leaders of the lands made a very foolish bet. They wished to see what nation could create the strongest champion with the aid of the sciences and the arcane."
  92. [21:30] <Alvis> "...That doesn't seem very foolish at all," Alvis chimes in, hand on his chin.
  93. 06[21:31] * Mitzi groans as she wakes up in a pile of books. "Someone needs to learn to make this stuff without the alcohol bit." She shakes her head and walks around, taking in her surroundings. "Huh, I'd have expected to wake up to Trilloby's disapproving leer." Eventually, she makes it up the staircase to everyone else, due to a combination of hard-to-miss chill gusts and a lack of interesting alternatives.
  94. [21:31] <Harphe> "The problem with a bet like that, Alvis, is that someone ends up winning it."
  95. [21:31] <Harphe> "And how does one prove that they are the strongest?"
  96. 06[21:31] * Syl pats Trilloby.
  97. [21:32] <Alvis> "Well, by fighting, but..." words are failing him.
  98. [21:32] <Mitzi> "Ah, Trilloby." Mitzi darts for her pet bird, completely missing the empress for a few moments. "Oh uh, excuse me I seem to be interrupting. Is this the part where we find out why we were attacked by maids and drunkdards?"
  99. 01[21:33] <~zoofman> The queen chuckles. "You are wise indeed, young songstress. They all suceeded, to say the least. They created beings beyond comprehension, creatures that should not be. And they could not control them. Their creations ravaged the lands of Rhazowa, scarring the land itself and slaughtering its inhabitants."
  100. [21:33] <Gelato> "By killing each other too is a correct answer, but a ruthless one."
  101. [21:33] <Rosette> "I don't suppose this has anything to do with how everyone in town seems to have vanished without a trace?
  102. [21:33] <Syl> "The lack of people here is what concerns me more, actually."
  103. [21:33] <Syl> "I was hoping you would know about that."
  104. 01[21:34] <~zoofman> She looks to Syl. "And that you shall, my tale is not complete."
  105. [21:34] <Alvis> "...Oh, that didn't go as I imagined it in my head at all" D:
  106. 06[21:37] * Mitzi chugs her last ether as she listens intently, not yet feeling quite up to speed enough to comment meaningfully in the conversation.
  107. [21:38] <Gelato> "Are those those spider creatures we fought earlier? Or are they even more powerful monsters?"
  108. 01[21:39] <~zoofman> "As their creations descended upon my nation, I turned to my council, lost on how to protect my people from creatures spawned to be the perfect combatents from a wager of kings and queens that I played no part in," she adjusts her posture a little, more relaxed. "And in that pursuit, I found guidance from the Tonberries, who live north of my lands."

The Tonberries are known for knowing magics created by their Goddess, Uggalepih. They told me of a spell to create an endless winter. To freeze the land itself so that none of these monstrocities could escape these lands. The Song of Ice."

  146. [21:50] <Mitzi> "That sounds awful. Couldn't you tell your uh, subjects to leave before you did that? Or at least let them hide out in this palace." Mitzi still clearly isn't up to speed, but this just sounds intuitively too weird for her to not comment.

  148. [21:52] <Gelato> "Now, what if... The monstrosities were what you say, hmmmhmm, eliminated, if they are still alive for that matter?"

  150. [21:52] <Rosette> "That's not all a frozen land seems to have accomplished, with all due respect."

Literally, a song, led by an Arch Mage, with the acompliance of eight pure maidens. Nine verses, at the end of each verses, the blood of one of the maidens to be spilled, and at the end the Arch Mage to take their own life."

  162. 01[21:58] <@zoofman> "A catastrophy, power surged within me, and a blindling light. It was then the second reagent became clear. The spell consumed the souls of all within a fifty mile radius to fuel an enetral storm of souls, and I was reborn."

"I dunnno about the rest of the magi here, but I've never encountered a spell involving ritual sacrifice in my studies that resulted in an unconditional good. I suppose that's neither here nor there now that it's a few hundred years past though."

I was a young leader pressed with the threat of my people being massecred, and believed the lives of a few could save them. And now I am the embodiment of my people's sin, Deciet."

  198. 01[22:11] <@zoofman> She stands, slowly, and slowly descends down the steps her throne sits upon. Her silver tail a large contrast to her black gown of silk. "To...undo the storm, requires my corperal body be destroyed. But if the storm subsides, the horrors we Rhazowans created may rise again. My reckless actions, while catastrophic, will have been in vain if they spread from this land."
  199. [22:12] <Gelato> "As i said before, we could make sure the abominations are destroyed."
  200. [22:12] <Mitzi> "Can we kill them while they're dormant? You know, save ourselves the trouble of a fair fight."
  201. [22:12] <Rosette> "I see. Well, then, perhaps it would be wisest we keep it in place for now. At least until we can discuss these findings with the camp and prepare a plan."
  202. [22:12] <Syl> "What do you know about the abominations, then?"
  203. [22:13] <Syl> "Do they walk the earth still? Or are they dormant?"
  204. [22:13] <Alvis> "...I dunno..." Alvis seems thoughtful for once.
  205. 01[22:13] <@zoofman> "Child, what makes you think -you- could brave the storm to investigate that matter, when it subdued forces that threatened to destroy us all?"
  206. [22:13] <Syl> Something about this seems -off-, though. Just as the Queen was used, so they might be, as well.
  207. [22:14] <Syl> "We arrived here, did we not?"
  208. [22:14] <Gelato> "Hmmhmm, not to mention we did bested your General."
  209. [22:15] <Mitzi> "Hey it's a question, and better than just setting them loose right here and now, yeah? You can child this and child that all you want, but you aren't exactly giving us many options here."
  210. 01[22:15] <@zoofman> She sighs. "A great man. One I brought back from the beyond to defend this place, to test those who may persist."
  211. [22:16] <Syl> "Surely those efforts are worth something to you."
  212. 01[22:17] <@zoofman> She gives Mitzi another glare. "Your impaitence is troubling. I've answered your call, permitted your presence, and will answer your questions in a manner that would have drove my councelors and advisors into a red rage. This is no formal hearing, but quell your impaitence as I speak."
  213. [22:18] <Rosette> "Our purpose in these lands is to investigate such dangers. Braving this storm would be nothing unexpected of us."
  214. 01[22:19] <@zoofman> She turns to Syl. "Their creations were horrific beings, the very wilds themselves were warped. One of you mentioned creatures of ursic and arachnic combination? That sounds like a much milder case."
  215. 01[22:19] <@zoofman> "I doubt they all have perished, and if the storm ends they will rebound."
  216. [22:20] <Alvis> "..." Alvis has started tapping his foot, licking his lips a little. His words are quiet, like he doesn't really want them to be heard but still has to get it out of his system somehow. "That... sounds kind of fun, actually."
  217. [22:20] <Mitzi> "The question though," Mitzi begins speaking more deliberately at this point, looking her in the eye, "is what you wish the world to remember of your civilization. No matter what attitude we brought to the table, were you ever honestly prepared to refuse outsiders who would offer to at least attempt some positive change? I'm not trying to be impatient, but being dismissive isn't helping."
  218. 01[22:22] <@zoofman> And then to Rosette. "As you've said, you wish for this storm to end, and to explore these lands. I am tired. My people, my kingdom, long demised.   768. [01:10] <Rosette> Rosette moves towards one fo the books, beginning to peruse it curiously.
  769. 01[01:10] <@Slamchest_Satan> The first tome is titled "The People of Rhazowa" It seems to be a history book outlining the different cultures of settled inhabitants.
  770. [01:12] <Rosette> "Hm, a book about their culture. No doubt this will be helpful."

  772. 01[01:14] <@Slamchest_Satan> The second is noticably thicker. "The Hundred Year War: A Close Study in the Causes, Events, Heroes and Resolution of the Conflict." It's one of the longest titles for a book you've probably ever seen.
  773. 01[01:16] <@Slamchest_Satan> The third is actually rather thin, by comparison, and has no title. Scimming through it seems to be an atlas, outlining what appears to be trade routes.
  774. 01[01:18] <@Slamchest_Satan> The forth is actually a scroll, and on examination is related to the fifth.
  775. [01:18] <Gelato> "The map seems to be useful, hmmhmm."
  776. 01[01:19] <@Slamchest_Satan> The scroll has many odd signs, lines, markings...It's not very ledgible. The fifth is a similarly marked.

  781. 06[01:22] * Mitzi nods along as Harphe points these things out. "You think we should move the camp in here? It...really beats the tents. There are kitchens here and everything, and it's WARM."
  782. [01:23] <Harphe> "That might actually be a good idea."
  783. [01:23] <Mitzi> "At the least, I'd like to set up my bed here."
  784. [01:23] <Harphe> "If we're to fight against terrible odds, it would be better to do it from a fortified position."
  785. [01:24] <Mitzi> "Uh huh. I hope Sylly isn't too angry to forget to warn the Bastion about what we've just unleashed."
  786. [01:24] <Rosette> "Oui, the dreadful presence has been laid to rest," Rosette says in agreement.
  787. [01:24] <Rosette> "We can likely move camp to here."
  788. [01:25] <Gelato> "Hmmm, with the rampaging monsters now allowed to go free? Not the best idea."
  789. [01:26] <Harphe> "There are rampaging monsters outside, Sir Gelato."
  790. [01:26] <Harphe> "And the castle would be easier to defend."
  791. [01:29] <Alvis> "To be fair, we don't know exactly how far away they are, but I am TOTALLY for living in an old ex-haunted castle." Alvis takes the moment to peek his head back into the room from wherever he darted off to.
  792. 06[01:29] * Mitzi nods her assent. "It really really is better than the tents."
  793. [01:30] <Mitzi> "So long as, you know, there isn't a monster waiting in the palace basement for us or something."
  794. [01:30] <Alvis> "Want me to go check?"
  795. [01:31] <Mitzi> "Go for it! And hey, go check the kitchen first for some weird tea or beer. It'll let you walk through walls, no joke!"
  796. 06[01:31] * Gelato shrugs. "Hmmhmm, well, it -is- unlikely for monsters to be living here, as it is the source of the spell that expelled them in first place."
  797. [01:32] <Alvis> "I know about that. I'm saving that for special occasions," he's still got a big grin plastered on his face so this probably sounds vaguely dangerous.
  798. 06[01:33] * Mitzi has a good idea of what 'special occasions' means and turns a light shade of red. "Y-you...you wouldn't!"
  799. [01:34] <Gelato> "...Speaking of special occasion, Sir Alvis..."
  800. [01:35] <Alvis> Alvis just grins, then adds, "I mean sneaking around hostile territory, of course."
  801. [01:35] <Gelato> "Do you still have 'that'? It was one of the items that i *cough* did not analyzed magically."
  802. [01:35] <Alvis> "...I don't know what you're talking about~"
  803. 06[01:35] * Harphe gathers up the song magic books and EXIT STAGE RIGHT >:I
  804. [01:35] <Mitzi> "Uh huh, yeah that territory will definitely be hostile if you try." Mitzi crosses her arms.

  806. [01:37] <Gelato> "Harrumph!"
  807. [01:38] <Alvis> "Anyway, I'll go scout out the place and you guys can go get the messages through to move camp?" he offers.

  809. 06[01:39] * Mitzi sighs "Alright then, but I've gotta deal with this headache first." and she makes her way to the kitchen to grab some water to treat her hangover. All the while, she tries to recall what some of the nicer rooms were to claim for herself later. Probably going to explore this place properly to make a choice.
  810. 06[01:40] * Alvis bounds off to go castle exploran 8D
  811. 01[01:41] <@Slamchest_Satan> Some returned to the camp, others explored the Palace, either way, as they left, the noticed the storm was indeed gone. The sky clear, it noticably warmer. Snow beginning to melt.
  812. [01:41] <Mitzi> (Totally need a castle exploring shenanigans mini later)
  813. 01[01:42] <@Slamchest_Satan> What will befall our heroes now that the barrier holding them back is gone? What of the monsters that Cixi tried to thwart 300 years ago? What the fuck is Alvis going to do with her panties?

  815. 06[01:42] * Syl wordlessly returns to camp, ready to debrief her superiors....and call for minor disciplinary action.
