  1. Image is from an encampment fire in downtown Seattle close to the CID.
  2. I have worked around this area over the past two years and have seen firsthand the homeless problem in Seattle (many times for work, going into encampments was necessary). Last year, I worked with the League of Conservation Voters, which addresses issues surrounding conservation not only of natural environments but the environments of community. People. This photo is very interesting for me in that it is provocative of how we think about conservation. At first glance it is a simple act of arson - destruction of the environment. I do not condone this kind of behavior. But something about this (and the media response) reminded me of the BLM rioting outrage. There is something symbolic about this, no matter how it was caused or who did it, as it relates to the community. These homeless people were ordered off the encampment just a couple days prior.

  4. A commenter on the KOMO news website posted: "Thinking people move to a location they can afford when their current location prices them out of the market."
  5. Another commenter on the KOMO site said: "Darwinism at Work."
  6. Both had upvotes.
  7. While one is reasonable and the other one clearly presented humorously, these statements reflect an energy which, if I had to guess, is close the actual cause of this fire (or at least the cause of the figurative fire of debate it sparked). That's because the entire premise of the commenters' logic is based on categorizing people (and environments). First of all, connecting this to Darwinism is awfully close to the misapplication of social Darwinism to Eugenics in the 1800s. And for the other comment, the whole argument hinges on the categorization of "thinking people" (in rhetoric, we call this an ideograph).
  8. Seems dangerously close to a fascist ideology to me. Seems like ideas that directly work to negatively impact a community of people. That's the environment, as well.
