- Move it to your personal Chemistry folder.
- Complete the assignment as instructed below - type in your answers in a different color font PLEASE.
- What is a period on the periodic table? How many are there?
- Periods are the horizontal rows. There are seven periods.
- What is a group on the periodic table? How many are there? The group numbers have a letter associated with them. What do the letters A and B distinguish?
- Groups are the vertical columns. There are 18 groups. Each group has a number associated with them. The letter A means they have they same amount of valence electrons (EX: Group IA has one valence electron and so on and so forth). The letter B signifies a transition metal which has inconsistent valence electrons.
- What are the characteristics of the following elemental groups discussed in the text?
- alkali metals
- alkaline earth metals
- halogens
- noble gases
- metals
- nonmetals
- metalloids
- Using the Periodic Table of the Elements given to you in class:
- Identify the groups of elements called:
- alkali metals
- alkaline earth metals
- transition elements
- halogens
- noble gases
- Color code these groups on your Periodic Table using colored pencils (make a key) - Color lightly (don’t press hard) and consider lighter colors to start with. Darker colors will be used later.
- Color Code the following other groups in some creative way (single line around square of color different than one already there) - I recommend using a darker color here.
- metalloids
- metals
- nonmetals
- What is an isotope?
- Define an isotope.
- Using ptable.com:
- identify the common isotopes of carbon and write them here using the chemical symbol, mass and atomic number. In parentheses write the percent abundance for each.
- How many neutrons does C-14 have? C-12?
