— areum's parents own gukil hospital located in seoul. despite being born in seoul, she and her sister were raised in daegu by their grandparents since their parents were constantly too busy to take care of them. she experienced an average elementary school life. she would go play around at her grandma's restaurant after school. at the age of eight her grandfather became very ill and eventually he passed away. she was left devastated. her parents managed to arranged homeschooling to allow her to have time away from school. she naturally begin to seclude herself from others. unfortunately, during her first year of middle school her grandmother passed away. she and her sister moved to seoul where they became under the care of their aunty's family. areum underwent a difficult time as she felt unloved by her parents who decided again not to cater for her and her sister. she went back to the normal schooling system in her second year of middle school. due to the fact that she was raised in daegu she had a very thick satoori accent. she was verbally and physically bullied by other students for her differences. instead of speaking up she decided to hide this away from teachers and her family members. she recalls making excuses if she had a visible bruise or was acting strange. she naturally begin to isolate herself from others. areum decide to seek help from the school councillor after she couldn't take the bullying anymore. the councillor contacted her parents regarding the bullying issue. she soon transferred to another school and begin to receive therapies to heal her mind. the therapist suggested she find a hobby that would put her at ease. she always had a passion for singing and decided to join the school choir to boost her confidence. luckily, she was able to meet kind people who took care of her like she was their family member. after joining a singing contest with her choir she was casted by sm entertainment. she made the decision to move to the trainee dorms in hope that she would lessen the burden for her aunty's family.

— she decided to move into one of the trainee dorms which was approximately an hour away from her aunty's house. other trainees found her intimidating since she never smiled nor talk to anyone. she was slightly hated by others since she was favoured by their vocal coach. she did have tough times but she never fell into a major slump. most of her stress was caused by balancing school work with training.
