	In an age nearly two centuries since when humanity first advanced into space, the Earth Sphere was divided into two major factions.

	One faction was the Earth Federation Government, the body unifying the Earth Sphere. The other was the space colonies floating in space. The space colonies have historically been under EFG jurisdiction, but with their numbers steadily increasing in time, the idea of them being "colonies" of Earth has lost credence.

	In New Common Era (NCE) 179, Side 3, the cluster of colonies farthest from Earth, declared itself the Principality of Zeon and launched a war of independence against the EFG. Armed with humanoid mobile weapons, the Zeon Forces had the advantage at first, but fierce resistance from the Earth Federation Forces (EFF) dragged the war into a stalemate. Before the EFF could launch its final offensive, Operation Star One, a mysterious giant object suddenly appeared in the L5 sector of space. It hurtled through huge chunks of the EFF and Zeon space forces before finally crashing on Earth at South Ataria Island. With both sides thoroughly exhausted and depleted, a ceasefire was signed, bringing a close to what would later be called the One Year War.

	After the war, a research body called the EOTI Organization, headed up by Dr. Bian Zoldak, studied the object that had fallen on South Ataria Island. They identified it as a supergiant-class space battleship crated by an unknown civilization. Not only did this establish the existence of intelligent lifeforms aside from humanity, but it also served as proof that there were large-scale wars being waged outside the Earth's solar system. The EFG's higher-ups, unwilling to accept this reality, instead focused on strengthening their rulership of the Earth Sphere and augmenting the EFF's military in order to better protect their own hides.

	Dr. Bian Zoldak predicted that the Earth Sphere would be dragged into these unprecedented space wars sooner or later, declaring that humanity had nowhere left to run. He established an organization devoted to developing anti-alien combat weaponry utilizing alien supertechnology (EOT), and this organization was called the Divine Crusaders (DC). At the same time, the EFF established the SDF, an anti-alien fleet headed up by two supergiant-class space battleships. The expense for this was enormous, and it plunged the Earth Sphere's economy into sharp decline.

	Moreover, most people had not been informed of the existence of extraterrestrial intelligent lifeforms. The people living in space (Spacenoids) opposed the EFG's oppression, and anti-EFG groups began to crop up all over the colonies.
While the Zeon Forces had fled to the asteroid of Axis, they reformed as the Neo Zeon Forces and resumed military activities with the Earth Sphere in chaos. In response to this, the upper echelons of the EFF formed two special forces groups called the Titans and OZ to hunt down Zeon remnants and quash Spacenoid resistance.

	Meanwhile on the Earth itself, the Dinosaur Empire and Yoma Empire showed up and attacked the Far East, but they were destroyed through the combined efforts of Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Raideen. Dr. Hell, an ally of the Dinosaur Empire, and Prince Sharkin of the Yoma Empire, are both augmenting their respective forces, awaiting their opportunity to rise again.

	Now, in NCE 187, the machinations of these different organizations are once more putting the Earth Sphere into a state of high tension...
