55. An international team of scientists and military personnel discover a Stargate network in the Pegasus Galaxy and come face-to-face with a new, powerful enemy, The Wraith.
 56. With the Ancients' city of Atlantis discovered in the Pegasus Galaxy by Stargate Command, Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Major Sheppard lead a scientific expedition to the ancient abandoned city. Once there, the team not only find themselves unable to contact Earth, but their explorations unexpectedly reawaken the Ancients' deadly enemies, The Wraith, who hunger for this new prey. Now with the help of newfound local allies like Teyla Emmagan, the Atlantis Team sets about to uncover their new home's secrets even as their war of survival against the Wraith begins.
 57. I read some of the reviews here, and frankly have a tough time rationalizing some of the negative ones...

For me, I understood from the start that SGA was not going to be an SG1 clone. It was never supposed to be, as the show played out in a different galaxy, had different characters, mostly a different plot, bad guys and direction...and Stargate Atlantis pulled it off well, until Brad Wrightdecided he was bored and screwed the fan base with the Stargate Universe fiasco...

To give you an idea how successful both SG1 and Atlantis were, both still show up in syndication...and will for some time to come...

p.s. The only bad thing I have to say about SGA, is casting Jason Mamoa as Ronan was a huge mistake. He has zero acting ability, and did not add to the show at all...the other would be playing musical leaders. Torri Higginson leant a certain charisma and vulnerability to the character Elizabeth Weir, and the show, but when they decided to replace her with Samantha Carter, they actually alienated most of the fans...
 58. In spite of loving Stargate SG-1 and the original film, and being excited about the great premise of this series, it always struck me as kind of disposable. I could never really buy into genuine drama, even the sort appropriate for a suspended-belief science fiction show. It amazes me that some consider Atlantis superior to SG-1. Of course the latter was famous for not taking itself too seriously, but it had a winking, tongue in cheek sort of humor that managed to not take away from its moments of seriousness. Atlantis lacked that same quality (although not for complete lack of effort), while to me at least, being rather more cartoonish in characterizations and aesthetics.

I read another review in which someone referenced Atlantis being compared to Star Trek Voyager. While the two shows certainly had their differences, I have to say that I felt a similarity in the sense that I ultimately could not take Voyager seriously, the same being the case with Atlantis.

In terms of specifics, the cast/characters were a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed Dr. McKay and even adored Elizabeth Weir, but Shepherd was nearly insufferable from the word go with his cheap Jack O'Neill shtick, and "Teyla" was a mystifying combination of self-serious demeanor pasted on an outdated 1990s Xena look that just did not jive with any sort of realism, particularly for an alien character. The villainous Wraith, while very frightening and indeed compelling in theory, were also hard for me to buy when stalking around in what looked like leather jackets and long rockstar hair.

Also, the city of Atlantis itself really did not look very exotic. Anyway, on the whole, this series just never hooked me, despite my repeated attempts to watch a few episodes. It is only my humble opinion, but I definitely do not consider Atlantis to be as good as SG-1. It is not a bad show per se, but not great. Stargate Universe later took things in the opposite direction, with a bit more success I would say.
