  1. Chapter 7
  2.
  3. >A flurry of loud steps fills the silent alleyways.
  4. >And behind you, was the slightly flustered Changeling queen.
  5. >A step on a puddle of water coats your shoes and legs in the murky cold sensation.
  6. >Well, ‘slightly flustered’, is a monumental understatement.
  7. >The snowing ash has subsided, but the cold wind blew it up.
  8. >Lucky for you, the wind blew on your back, not against you.
  9. >It was almost like it was propelling you.
  10. >Your feet race faster.
  11. >Tonight.
  12. >It ends tonight.
  13. >You take a left turn in a fork, and come to a main road.
  14. >You can reach the marketplace straight from here.
  15. >The plan?
  16. >There is no plan.
  17. >You don’t need a plan.
  18. >You follow the yellow brick road into the marketplace.
  19. >It should be empty at this hour of night, but due to recent events, it is filled to the brim with refugees.
  20. >The fire flushed most of them out, the rest- dead.
  21. >And of course, the queen will return to her people.
  22. >You and Chrysalis pass glances at the changeling drones in disguise.
  23. >Many are busy tending to their own to even realize your presence.
  24. >But even in this chaos, there are those with sharp eyes.
  25. >As soon as a pony suddenly rushes away from you, it begins.
  26. >You slowly turn to Christie, and nod.
  27. >She smirks, before enveloping herself in green flames.
  28. >From it, came her usual disguise, an average pony.
  29. >The two of you quickly separated, taking off to opposing directions.
  30. >Chrysalis easily blended with the crowd, but for a tall human like you?
  31. >No dice.
  32. >You found yourself being chased through the camp once again.
  33. >Funny how things turn out.
  34. >You push a confused stallion out of your path, and jump over a few baskets.
  35. >You take a sharp turn between two makeshift tents, skipping through the narrow path.
  36. >You appear out of a small ‘street’ stretched across the tents.
  37. >You duck and hide from view.
  38. >Just like the city.
  39. >Too many paths to escape.
  40. >You take the moment to catch your breath, before peeking over the red tent.
  41. >You hear a shout and a few pegasi hovering over you.
  42. >You don’t hesitate, and make haste.
  43. >Five guards block your path, but you easily push past them.
  44. >They quickly get to their hooves and chase after you.
  45. >Too slow.
  46. >The chase attracts quite an attention, scared civilians and changelings alike.
  47. >Of course, this means more chasing after you.
  48. >Even the actual guards are after you- they’re probably expecting you to steal something.
  49. >Just enough to grab the attention of the queen.
  50. >Your eyes dart through your field of vision, looking for anything that might resemble a changeling queen.
  51. >”What is the meaning of this?” A voice booms through the market square.
  52. >You see a tall mare on the gallows, shifting her sights through the ruckus.
  53. >”Who is-“ Her speech is cut short as she lays her eyes on you.
  54. >You stare back for a moment, still on your run.
  55. “Hello.” You whiper.
  56. >You make a sweeping path over to the gallows, the queen’s eyes on you like a spotlight.
  57. >You disappear into the waves of makeshift housing.
  58. >You squeeze through a path between two shops, and jump under a cart.
  59. >And the die is cast.
  60. >Your turn, Chrysalis.
  61.
  62. >She blew a stray mane away from her face, scattering the ash to the air.
  63. >She took one step forward, with her soft, pink hoof.
  64. >And then another, the decayed leg.
  65. >A small ring of fire traced her body, slowly transforming her back to her original form.
  66. >Ponies around her eyed her silently, and then followed her.
  67. >They also shed away their looks, back to their repulsive look.
  68. >They hissed and growled at each other, blindly following their queen’s lead.
  69. >The group slowly grew bigger-
  70. >And large enough to divert the other queen’s attention.
  71. >Chrysalis shot a hostile stare at her competitor.
  72. >The other queen replied with a smug look on her face.
  73. >And the two monarchs shared a moment of tension, before chaos erupted.
  74. >Changeling killed changeling, and soon enough, screams of agony filled the streets.
  75. >The royal guards came in, but no way they could subdue the fight in that mass.
  76. >They eventually decided to withdraw to a corner, and fight off anyone stupid enough to attack them.
  77. >They knew what this fight meant.
  78. >The guards knew, for once, to stay out.
  79. >And in the heart of the storm, the two queens were locked in battle.
  80. >Two rays of pure energy met with each other, and quickly escalated to a tug of war.
  81. >Chrysalis tried to pull on the emotion she felt a while ago.
  82. >She could supply herself with some bit of power.
  83. >Now, it was up to her willpower.
  84. >And Anon.
  85.
  86. >You kick a changeling square in the face, and push through the battle.
  87. >You feel a nip on your leg and a light scratch on your forearm.
  88. >A changeling suddenly jumps on you, scratching away with its holed leg.
  89. >It was quite sharp, and you felt tiny jolts of pain on your torso.
  90. >You rear up your leg and kick the changeling away, not before earning a scratch on your cheek.
  91. >You swipe your hand over your cheek, and find crimson stain on your palms.
  92. >You get up and keep moving towards Chrysalis.
  93. >How to find her?
  94. >Easy.
  95. >Follow the lights.
  96. >The changeling swarm begins to thin down as you near the source of the light.
  97. >Spark fly overhead, as you are blinded by the sea-green light.
  98. >You put up an arm over the light to protect your eyes, as you slowly made your way.
  99.
  100. >”Is that what you bring? Is this the best you could give?” The other queen taunts.
  101. >Chrysalis did not reply, but focused her magic.
  102. >She knew she was tiring out.
  103. >The other queen knew that too.
  104. >”Sad, really.” The queen put more strength into her beam. “To think my sister would be this bad.”
  105. >Chrysalis blinked once.
  106. >”Sister?” She asked.
  107. >”Yes, dear sister, we are from the same hive- what makes you think we can control the same swarm?”
  108. >The other queen sighed.
  109. >”Chrysalis, dear sister, don’t you recognize me? It’s Regina.”
  110. >”Regina? Doesn’t ring a bell.”
  111. >Regina went deadpan for a second, before assuming her original outlook.
  112. >”I wouldn’t be surprised; you were still a welp- cowering into the streets of Canterlot.”
  113. >Regina continued.
  114. >”It is nice to see a family member, but don’t take this personally- it’s just business.”
  115. >Regina poured more energy, and Chrysalis’ magic began to wane.
  116.
  117. >You saw the green light losing.
  118. >That is obviously not good.
  119. >Chrysalis is struggling, you can see her face streaming with sweat.
  120. >And here was your mother’s murderer, distracted in her own fight and ego.
  121. >Screw honor and nobility.
  122. >You were a thief.
  123. >And she was a changeling.
  124. >You reach for your pocket knife, and draw it slowly.
  125. >You are also walking towards her, bent on ending this creature.
  126. >She doesn’t even see you coming, until you are right by her.
  127. >And when your footsteps are finally heard, it is too late.
  128. >You plunge your knife on her neck, and let go.
  129. >Her offensive magic quickly fades away, and she stares at you with eyes wide open.
  130. >”Y-you…”
  131. “For mom.”
  132. >You see her blood slowly oozing out of her broken carapace.
  133. >She envelops your knife with her magic and pulls it out.
  134. >She begins to hyper-ventilate, as her pupils focus on the blood coated knife.
  135. >She looks down to her wound, and then to you.
  136. >And she begins to laugh.
  137. >”You think this would kill me?”
  138. >She scoffs, and fires a beam at your shoulder.
  139. >You are thrown three feet to the ground, lying on your back.
  140. >You clutch the hole on your shoulder.
  141. >The queen cackles, as she slowly made her way to you.
  142. >You see her blood trickling down her neck, as she looks down with a mad gaze.
  143. >”Well, any last words?” Her horn begins to glow.
  144. “Yeah. She’s always right.”
  145. >”Who-“
  146. >The other queen is quickly cut off, as a bolt blasts her away from you.
  147. >You turn to your right, to see Chrysalis, her horn still glowing.
  148. >”’She’s always right?’ Those are some deep words to leave the world, Anon.” Chrysalis lifts you up to your feet.
  149. >You crack a smile.
  150. >And then lose the expression as you turn to the downed queen.
  151. >You pick up the knife again.
  152. >You kneel over the other queen, who is still paralyzed over the surprise attack.
  153. >”How…”
  154. >You don’t let her continue, and stab her in the heart.
  155. >You worked with ponies long enough to know where it was.
  156. >”Please…” She begs.
  157. >You pull it out, and clutch the knife with both hands.
  158. >And with all the strength you can muster, you bring it down on the heart again.
  159. >Changeling blood squirts up to your face.
  160. “You feel that?” You shout at her ear.
  161. “That is from mom, and every other pony you fucked with!”
  162. >She struggles weakly, before going silent.
  163. >Your anger disappears as fast as you could bring it up.
  164. >You look down at the dead queen, and then to the warring changelings around you.
  165. >They stopped when you intercepted the duel, and are now watching the two of you silently.
  166. >As if they are waiting for an order.
  167. >Chrysalis looks down to the body as well.
  168. >”See you later, sis.” She adds.
  169.
  170. >For once, you hear music and cheers.
  171. >Ponies offer each other drinks, as they celebrate.
  172. >They are all changelings.
  173. >Celebrating their new-found leader, and the victory.
  174. >So this is what victory feels like.
  175. >So…
  176. >Empty.
  177. >You had no satisfaction on murdering her.
  178. >You wanted her to suffer, you’d admit.
  179. >”What’s with the doom and gloom, Anon?” Christie takes a seat next to you.
  180. >You groan once, and point at the bandaged shoulder.
  181. >”Come on.” She hands you a cup of cider.
  182. >”For us.” She smiles, and puts the cup up.
  183. “For us.” You return, and clink it.
  184. “So, what happens now?” You ask, relaxing a bit.
  185. >”Well, we must organize the populace and-“
  186. “Wait wait wait- organize? What have you done to the Christie I know?”
  187. >She rolls her eyes and punches you in the arm.
  188. >”I know, don’t get used to it.”
  189. >Her eyes drift away, looking over the party.
  190. >Especially to this stallion.
  191. >She raises a brow and smirks, and he stallion slowly makes his way to her.
  192. “You know, I could hel-“
  193. >”Yeah that’s great, see you.” Chrysalis gets up and reverts to her Changeling form.
  194. >She is suddenly escorted by a large changeling.
  195. >”See you tomorrow, Anon.” She passes a look to the changeling with her.
  196. >He only got this smug look on his face.
  197. >Must be a changeling thing.
  198. >The two slowly go away from the party, and head into a house.
  199. >Noticing this, you call to Chrysalis.
  200. “Christie!”
  201. >She ignores you.
  202. >Well, your voice is drowned in the merry making.
  203. >The door closes, and the lights inside switch off.
  204.
  205. “Christie?”
