  9. >Be Anon atta Canterlot High School
  10. >The life of a student is a busy one, and yours is no exception
  11. >School, study, work, sleep
  12. >It's a schedule that doesn't allow for much free time
  13. >Or many interactions with your peers
  14. >So you spend your lunch as you spend most days, alone
  15. >Whatever, at least the school's serving pork chops today
  16. >And it's been about five minutes, which means-
  17. >As you reach down into your bag, you hear
  18. "Hey, what's up, Anon?"
  19. >Glancing up to see who's speaking, you sigh
  20. >It's basically a formality at this point anyway
  21. "Rainbow, good afternoon."
  22. >Immediately Rainbow Dash's brightens
  23. >It's slightly endearing, like a puppy
  24. >But it comes with a cost, you know
  25. >At the same time she smiles, you flip open your schedule book and start looking it over
  26. "So?"
  27. >Rainbow's grin grows towards a concerning width as she leans forwards
  28. >"Well, I was wondering if you had some time after school either today or tomorrow to hang out!"
  29. >As if you needed to ask, since it's the same thing every day
  30. >Glancing down at the scheduler, you sigh and try to look disappointed
  31. "Ah, all booked."
  32. >Apparently you can still sell it though
  33. >Rainbow's expression drops as she gives a weak grunt
  34. >"For real?"
  35. "For real."
  36. >You turn a page and look over the next day, then show it to her as well.
  37. "Today and tomorrow are right out."
  38. >Turning the page again, you raise an eyebrow
  39. "I do have some time open the day after tomorrow."
  40. >Hissing in frustration, Rainbow crosses her arms under her chest
  41. >"That far out? Oh, man, I don't know what's going on after tomorrow."
  42. >You manage to hide a smile, but lean your cheek on your palm
  43. >The same song and dance, every single day
  44. >"I'll get back with you tomorrow, okay?"
  45. "That's fine, I'll be waiting."
  46. >As Dash nods and starts digging into her lunch, you bite back a laugh
  47. >It's a routine at this point
  48.
  49. >Rainbow has absolutely no concept of future planning
  50. >Meanwhile, you've got the next three weeks planned out
  51. >And by the time she asks tomorrow, the slot for the next day will have been filled
  52. >You wonder how long you'll be able to keep this up?
  53. >Well, it's been the better part of a year already
  54. >And once you figured her out, it's been easy to avoid her advances
  55. >She's the type that approaches everything in a straightforward manner after all
  56. >After gulping down some milk, Rainbow looks at you again
  57. >"So, you sure you haven't got a little bit for CHS' greatest athlete today?"
  58. "Pretty sure."
  59. >You take a bite of your lunch and chew, then swallow
  60. "After school I've got work, and then time to study before bed."
  61. >"Why study? You're basically at the top of the class behind Twilight, some of the brains, Sunset, Watermelody-"
  62. "Reason enough to keep studying."
  63. >The girl deflates, scowling
  64. >"Come on dude, it'll be like fifteen, maybe thirty minutes. I mean, they don't call me 'The Dash' for nothing!"
  65. "They call you 'The Dash' because it's in your name. And because of The Incredibles."
  66. >"Sh-shut up!"
  67. >You bite your tongue as your lip starts to curl
  68. "Anyway, I've got to finish my lunch. But you're welcome to stick around."
  69. >Rainbow gives an enthusiastic nod
  70. >"Cool, then, if you've got like even five minutes afterwards?"
  71. >Allowing a smile, you shrug
  72. "I guess I'd be all yours."
  73. >"AWESOME!"
  74. >Rainbow squeals, clenching her fists tightly.
  75. >"Hurry up and finish eating then!"
  76. >You nod, continuing to go at your own pace
  77. >Honestly, you're not trying to string the girl along, but she doesn't take the hint
  78. >You don't hate her or anything, but you've got bigger fish to fry
  79. >The sooner she figures out, on her own, that it's not going to happen, the better
  80. >Even still, the excitable girl stares at you intently as you eat
  81. >So much so, it begins to make you nervous
  82. >And, before you know it, you've actually almost finished eating
  83. >With ten minutes left
  84. >Oh fickle fate...
  85.
  86. >"Well, well, looks like time is on my side today."
  87. >Grinning like a hungry she-cat, the flirty girl leans forwards
  88. >"Just enough time for me to show you how quick things can be."
  89. >Oh you stepped it in now, Anon.
  90. >Sighing, you finish up your lunch and wipe your mouth
  91. "Okay, a deal's a deal I supp-"
  92. >And then, something extraordinary happens
  93. >"Rainbow "Every Diss is a Kiss" Dash."
  94. >"Oh no."
  95. >Oh yes
  96. >You send a silent prayer up to whatever butterfly may be flapping its wings as a storm blows in
  97. >Zephyr Breeze
  98. >Tall, lanky, incredibly awkward, incapable of shaving and top it all off with a man-bun
  99. >The antitheses to Rainbow's cool
  100. >And also her kryptonite
  101. >Sitting down next to the girl, Zephyr grins
  102. >"So what brings a beautiful girl like you over to a loser table like this."
  103. >"Nothing! In fact, I was just getting ready to leave."
  104. >With a surprisingly smooth motion, Zephyr tosses his tray onto another table, right in front of a student
  105. >Looks like Snips is getting double potions today
  106. >"What a coincidence! So was I. Lets go together."
  107. >Keeping a straight face is difficult at this try-hard act, but it's prudent to keep silent and run time off the clock
  108. >"Actually, I had plans with Anon so-"
  109. >Ah, maybe you should have said something after all
  110. >"A-who?"
  111. >Looking around, Zephyr grins again
  112. >"I don't see anyone here but we two; and pretty soon it will just be one, you and me, together."
  113. >Rainbow gives a disgusted hack
  114. >Zephyr conveniently ignores it
  115. >"Anyway-"
  116. >Reaching out and taking your hand, Rainbow tries to pull you to your feet
  117. >"-lets get out of here, Anon."
  118. "Ah, fine."
  119. >Five minutes gone.
  120. >Now if you can just take your time-
  121. >"Hold on a second."
  122. >Zephyr looks to Rainbow, then to her hand, then up to you
  123. >He repeats this process a few times, his face continuing to darken with each pass
  124. >Until finally-
  125. >"What the hell are you doing with MY Rainbow Dash?!"
  126. >"What?"
  127. >Wut?
  128. >Zephyr slams his hands on the table and growls
  129. >"What kind of fuckhole are you?"
  130.
  131. >For the first time in the exchange, you allow an honest, but confused smile
  132. "What are you talking about?"
  133. >"You know good and well!"
  134. >Zephyr reaches out, slapping at your hands
  135. >You weren't holding especially tightly, so you're separated from Rainbow
  136. >She's staring at the two of you with wide eyes
  137. >Ah, oh no, how awful...
  138. >Rubbing at your tingling wrist, you offer a fake smile
  139. "I think you're over reacting, manbun."
  140. >Beside you, Dash snorts, and you can hear a hearty guffaw from someone at another table
  141. >That only makes Zephyr turn a fascinating shade of purple
  142. >Reaching out, he grabs you by the collar and tries to get up in your face
  143. >Well, in this case it's down, and his grip is all over the place, but at least he's intense about it
  144. >"Leave my hair out of this; I'm tired of you leading Rainbow along!"
  145. >Ah, there's a bit of a pain right there
  146. >Up until now you'd been pretty sure blondie's all bark and no bite
  147. >But he's got a sharp tongue at least, so you fire right back
  148. "I'm not leading anyone along!"
  149. >In the stillness that follows, you hear a small gasp
  150. >Looking back to Rainbow Dash, you see she's brought her hands to her mouth and is staring at you in shock
  151. >You can almost swear you hear her mutteing
  152. >"Omigosh,omigosh,omigosh!"
  153. >Hm, maybe you were a little too impassioned in your denial?
  154. >Zephyr's eyes are almost as wide, but they darken quickly as he shoves you back a step
  155. >"This is exactly what I'm talking about. Fluttershy told me not to say anything, but I'm putting you on notice, prick!"
  156. >Scowling, he jams a finger into your face
  157. >"This afternoon, in front of the statue. You better be there!"
  158. >There's a long silence as you feel the eyes on you
  159. >You sigh and give him a tired look
  160. "Or what?"
  161. >And just like that the lunchroom focuses on Zephyr
  162. >"What do you mean?"
  163.
  164. "I mean that there's absolutely no reason for me to fight you. You just up and decided that we should, buzzing around like your decision actually matters."
  165. >Raising your hand, you flick your fingers twice in his direction
  166. "As the challenged, the only thing I have to do is not show up."
  167. >Zephyr considers that for a moment, then adopts a victorious pose with his hands on his hips
  168. >"In that case, I'll have already won!"
  169. "Oh, yay, hooray. Our champion."
  170. >You tap your fingertips against your palm a few times, earning another glare
  171. "Look, I just don't want to fight. So stop asking."
  172. >The bell rings overhead and you shoulder your bag
  173. "Anyway, nice meeting you, manbun. Gotta get to class now."
  174. >You turn and walk towards the doors
  175. >Zephyr's voice calls after you in short order
  176. >"Coward! Inch-long dong! Fuckin Cuck!"
  177. >It doesn't end like a movie scene, where everyone stays seated until you leave
  178. >Life just doesn't work like that
  179. >But you do get a good number of stares in the hall
  180. >Whatever.
  181. >This will all blow over soon enough.
  182.
  183. >At least, that's how it should work
  184. >As the bell to end fourth period ends, the teacher calls you up to the desk
  185. >"So, Anonymous, I hear you're in a bit of a spot."
  186. >You stare at the squat man, sitting with his fingers steepled together
  187. "I'm not sure what you mean, Mr. Doodle."
  188. >"Oh, I think you do; I think the whole school knows by this point."
  189. >He gives you a knowing look
  190. >Your blank stare and continued silence quickly causes that to crumble however as he huffs and drops his hands
  191. >"The fight?"
  192. "The what?"
  193. >"Don't play dumb, boy. The fight with Zephyr Breeze?"
  194. "Ah, right. I guess I hadn't thought much about it."
  195. >"It's okay to be intimidated, but you shouldn't resign yourself to defeat so easily."
  196. >The clock ticks twice before you shake your head
  197. "Oh, no, it's not like that at all."
  198. >Mr. Doodle's eyes bulge
  199. >"So you're that confident you'll beat him to a pulp!?"
  200. >Another tick
  201. "No, I just figured I had more important things to focus on doing than worrying about an underclassman wanting to fight."
  202. >"Ah, I see. You're going in with a natural confidence. Good, good. I was afraid you might need a pep talk."
  203. >As Mr. Doodle nods in approval
  204. >You remain quiet, then ask
  205. "More to the point, shouldn't you be focusing on how to stop the fight from occurring? You are a teacher after all."
  206. >"Are you kidding?"
  207. >Mr. Doodle grins
  208. >"I've been waiting since he started at CHS for someone to put that blonde-haired moron in his place!"
  209. "There seems to be a bit of miscommunication here."
  210. >"That's how most fights begin, yes."
  211. "But-"
  212. >"But the Principals have already decided that you two can handle this yourselves. You are young men after all!"
  213. "No, I mean-"
  214. >Mr. Doodle silences you by standing and reaching over the desk to place a hand on your shoulder
  215. >He's grinning from ear to ear as he gives you a thumbs up
  216. >"I'm counting on you, do me proud, son!"
  217. >The door to the classroom closes behind you
  218. "What the actual fuck."
  219.
  220. >Not only is the staff not looking to stop this supposed fight, but Mr. Doodle seemed a bit, off
  221. >Maybe the prospect of enjoying some schadenfreude was getting to him?
  222. >You shakes your head and go towards your next class
  223. >That's the intention anyway, before Zephyr Breeze cuts you off in the science hall
  224. >"Well, if it isn't Anonymous "King Cuck"-"
  225. >The blonde stops, looking confused for a moment
  226. >"What is your last name anyway?"
  227. >You take the opportunity to walk by him as he's confused
  228. >That doesn't stop him from reaching out to grab you by the arm
  229. >"Woah, hang on a minute. Don't think I'm going to let you get away a second time without agreeing to our fight!"
  230. "I've already said I'm not interested."
  231. >"Then I'll sweeten the pot."
  232. "Pretty sure you've got nothing I want."
  233. >As you move to pull your arm free, he quietly says
  234. >"50K."
  235. >Nobody else reacts, but you heard it all the same
  236. >Still
  237. "What was that?"
  238. >The blonde flashes a smarmy grin
  239. >"Lets talk business, in private."
  240. >After a moment of consideration, and a brief walk, you find yourself in the chemistry supply closet
  241. "Pretty sure it's a bad idea to be meeting in here."
  242. >Zephyr grins again
  243. >"But you came anyway, so that means you're interested, right?"
  244. "No, I mean with all the corrosive chemicals. You could walk out of here looking like Two-Face if something goes wrong."
  245. >"Nolan or TAS?"
  246. "Schumacher."
  247. >"Ick."
  248. "So, what's this about 50K?"
  249. >Moving towards a more open space in the room, Zephyr puts his hands on his hips
  250. >"Sure. I want to reach a gentleman's agreement. I'll agree to go easy on you, if you agree to go down easy."
  251. "For 50K?"
  252. >"Something like that."
  253. "I don't want something 'like' that. I want that."
  254. >"Oh, I know. But you're not really in a position to refuse, are you?"
  255. >Walking over, he places a hand on your shoulder and adopts a mocking smile
  256. >"Are you still waiting on that payout from the accident? Or has your auntie already squandered it?"
  257. >You remain quiet
  258.
  259. >"Well, either way, I don't care. Make me look good, and the 50k is yours. That's all I care about."
  260. >He walks past you
  261. >This time it's you're turn to grab him
  262. >Granted, you do it by the collar and pull the gagging underclassman back to you
  263. "That's all you care about? So is that why you picked me?"
  264. >You offer a shallow smile
  265. "Because you thought I'd jump at the opportunity for money and let you show off?"
  266. >Zephyr's gulp is loud enough to echo in the small room
  267. >You can see his adam's apple struggle against the now-tight neck of his shirt
  268. "Or is it actually for Rainbow?"
  269. >He tries to put on that self-assured, but you know how to recognize a fraud
  270. >"Of course it's for Rainbow. I said as much at lunch. But does it matter?"
  271. "Absolutely."
  272. >Turning him around, you position your face close to his
  273. "I don't know what you think you have with Dash, but don't think that just because I'm strapped for cash, I'm going to lie down like a dog just to make you look good."
  274. >Taking a deep breath, you let the skinny boy go and take a step back
  275. >The blonde rubs at his throat a few times, his voice quivering a bit as he asks
  276. >"So, what does that mean?"
  277. >Frowning, you turn your head
  278. "It means you really should have left this situation alone, manbun. At least then you could keep gloating about me not showing up."
  279. "Now I might just want to grind that half-assed stencil beard off your face just because I find you to be a pain."
  280. >When he doesn't move, you glare at him
  281. "Anyway, I'll think about throwing the fight, but I'm not agreeing to anything right now."
  282. >Zephyr gives an uncertain nod and backs away
  283. >Five steps distance, he bolts out the door
  284. >The bell has already rung by this point, so you take a few extra minutes to collect yourself
  285. >Breathe out the hate and the anger until it's smoldering again
  286. >Put on a neutral expression, or maybe grin a bit?
  287. >Anyway, take time, make a reasoned decision
  288. >It's not like you won't have the time when you're in detention for being late to class
  289.
  290. >And run right into her
  291. >"Yo, Anon!"
  292. >Rainbow cheeses at you from her perch on top of her desk
  293. >Hers, because she always seems to be in detention with you
  294. >Somehow she just knows
  295. >You leave her and sign in to the class
  296. "Anonymous, late. Please let Ms. Zecora know.
  297. >Ms. Harshwhinny looks up at you and gives a smug smile
  298. >"Sure. Good luck this afternoon, Anonymous."
  299. >What the everloving hell is wrong with this school?
  300. >It's a bit obnoxious to have her following you, but you sit down beside Rainbow anyway
  301. >That's just the way things are
  302. >The way they have been
  303. >The way they probably ought to continue
  304. >After an awkward silence, Rainbow perks up
  305. >"Fluttershy saw you arguing with her brother in the hall."
  306. "We did. What's that got to do with anything."
  307. >"It's how I knew you'd be coming here, of course! You're such a goody-goody."
  308. "Nothing wrong with following the rules."
  309. >"They'd let it slide if you tried."
  310. "I don't want it to slide."
  311. >You turn to Rainbow and sigh
  312. "I don't want to be treated differently than anybody else. I just want to be Anonymous, same as before."
  313. >Dash looks at you for a long moment, then buzzes her lips lightly
  314. >"But you're not. You're not and we all know it."
  315. >Stretching her feet across your desk, she stares at you
  316. >"You haven't been the same since the accident. Which, I get it, it's understandable. But-"
  317. >Turning her eyes away, Rainbow shrugs
  318. >"But you've just been busying yourself. Shutting everyone out. Acting like you don't care anymore."
  319. "I don't."
  320. >Pulling out your science text book, you start going over the reading for today
  321. >Rainbow taps her shoes together, still watching you as you turn the page
  322. >"So, what are you going to do?"
  323. "About Zephyr?"
  324. >"Zephyr. Life. Anything."
  325. "About the first, I don't know. About the second, I'll just keep on going as I have been."
  326. >Dash is quiet for a long time
  327. >And then
  328. >"What if I don't want you to be the same anymore?"
  329. >There's a tremor in her voice
  330.
  331. >You fight the urge to look up, and instead speak to your book
  332. "I don't think you really get a say in that decision, Rainbow."
  333. >Her legs disappear from your periphery, but soon enough her hands are planted on the desk
  334. >She whispers in your ear
  335. >"I'm just tired, Anon. I feel like I've been waiting for ages, and you're just as tight as ever. I have to wonder, is it even worth it?"
  336. >That's twice today you've felt sharpness in your body
  337. >Coming from Rainbow, there's an added twist to it that really stings
  338. >"I'm your friend, Anonymous. Sometimes I think I'm the only one you have left."
  339. "You're probably right."
  340. >"I really wish you wouldn't agree so quickly."
  341. >She gives a small, but heavy laugh and sits back on her desk
  342. >"I mean, I finally have you to myself for once, and now I'm just making things awkward by being all over the place."
  343. >You turn and give her a half-smile
  344. "I guess it's the same when you're on the pitch. Don't hate what you're good at."
  345. >With watery eyes, Rainbow coughs up another laugh
  346. >"I guess."
  347. >And then comes the silence
  348. >You turn back to your book, but the words just start blurring together
  349. >So you stop reading and start thinking
  350. >You're not stupid, it's clear what Rainbow wants
  351. >It's always been clear, but now she just wants it more
  352. >And, maybe, you would have wanted it too
  353. >But it, along with everything else, just feels fake
  354. >Fake people, fake smiles, fake condolences
  355. >Show up, take advantage, head on their way
  356. >Even the anger and grief you're supposed to feel seems fake
  357. >So, what's real?
  358. >Money, of course
  359. >You can touch it, feel it, use it
  360. >Money doesn't judge where it goes
  361. >Money doesn't do anything but what you tell it
  362. >Maybe pride too?
  363. >It's not tangible, but it comes from somewhere inside you
  364. >It's honest and forthright, to the point of being obnoxious
  365. >And, just like any feeling, you can lose it in an instant
  366. >You turn your head to Rainbow
  367. >Within a few seconds, she's looking back and smiling
  368. >That's fake too
  369. >But maybe not entirely
  370.
  371. >Eventually the bell rings
  372. >You pack up your things and shoulder your bag
  373. >Rainbow is right by your side
  374. >"So, end of the day."
  375. "Yup."
  376. >"Decide what you're going to do?"
  377. "I'd really like to leave. I've got work today."
  378. >Rainbow nods her head
  379. >"Yeah, I figured."
  380. >You stop, and it takes her a full stride before she turns and looks back
  381. "But, I think I should probably take care of this business with Zephyr first."
  382. >Giving a slow nod, Rainbow moves a half step closer, but you cut her off with a smile
  383. "He offered me a lot of money, to throw the fight. Enough that I wouldn't have to worry about things, at least for a little while."
  384. >Rainbow doesn't miss a beat
  385. >"I'd hate you."
  386. >Her stone cold stare seizes your heart and tightens its grip around it
  387. >"I would hate you forever. There's nothing more to discuss."
  388. >She storms by you, headed for the front of the school
  389. >You stand in the hall, alone, staring after her until she's gone
  390. >Considering the situation, and yourself, once more, you turn down the hall, to the front of the school.
  391.
  392. >A small crowd has gathered, some faces you recognize, a lot you don't
  393. >Underclassmen, most likely
  394. >But Rainbow's there, and so are some of the staff members
  395. >Seriously, what the hell?
  396. >Zephyr stands in the middle of the group and, hearing the crowd murmur turns to face you with a smile
  397. >"Well, well, if it isn't A-"
  398. "Cram it down your cakehole, manbun."
  399. >He flinches back
  400. "I'm here, but I'll give you until the count ends to change you mind and walk away."
  401. >You can see his knee start to quiver
  402. "But, I guess that's time enough for you to decide if it's worth it to hit me too."
  403. >Grinning, you raise an eyebrow
  404. "Do you feel confident you can take me down in one shot?"
  405. "Three."
  406. >Zephyr shuffles about, looking from side to side
  407. "Two."
  408. >"Hang on, give me a second."
  409. "You've got one."
  410. >He wails running forward with his fist pulled back
  411. >You smile and stop counting as he drills you in the face
  412. >Your head turns with the punch, making it look more impressive than it should be
  413. >Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Zephyr's victorious smile
  414. >It turns your stomach
  415. >When your elbow drives into his middle, he folds over like a playing card table
  416. >Zephyr hacks up a stuck breath, wheezing as you grab his hairbun and give it a little shake before pulling him upright
  417. >You pat his cheek with your free hand and give a small smile
  418. "Just checking, are we good now?"
  419. >"What?"
  420. >Oof, he sounds pretty rough
  421. "Are we good? Done? I've got plans today, and I really don't want to fight. I mean, I can make more time and really pound you into the pavement, but if you're good, just say so."
  422. >After a moment, the boy swallows and nods
  423. >"Y-yeah, I think so.
  424. "Atta boy. Good dog."
  425. >You release his hair and slap both of his cheeks before turning to the crowd
  426. "Okay, get outta here, we've made up. All buddy-buddy now, see?"
  427. >Flinging an arm around the still wheezing Zephyr's shoulders, you wave everyone off
  428.
  429. >The crowd is slow to disperse, Mr. Doodle in particular seems back to his usual scowly self, but you don't mind
  430. >Once things have thinned out a bit, and Zephyr's caught his breath, you place your hands on his shoulders and size him up
  431. "Ah, good, good. Now that that's taken care of, we can settle up."
  432. >"Settle up?"
  433. "Mhmm."
  434. >Dusting him off, you smile
  435. "I told you, asking me to throw the fight was a bad idea because you're not risking anything. So, as the victor, I'm willing to make a deal."
  436. >Reaching back, you grin and tap his hairbun
  437. "How much are you willing to pay me, not to cut that off?"
  438.
  439. >Ten minutes, half a dozen threats, and ten thousand dollars, later, you're wrapping up with your boss
  440. "Yeah, something's come up. No, no meeting, just need some personal time."
  441. >You nod your head
  442. "I'll be back in tomorrow; we can talk about cutting my hours back next week."
  443. >Another nod as your boss agrees
  444. "Much appreciated. Thanks."
  445. >Turning back to Rainbow, you offer a small grin to the rainbow-haired girl
  446. "I'm a little surprised you're still here."
  447. >Rainbow raises any eyebrow and grins
  448. >"Do you honestly think I would miss a chance to see Zephyr squirm?"
  449. "I think he sold himself short. He should really think more highly of himself."
  450. >Rainbow giggles and grabs hold of your arm
  451. >"So, since you're not going into work, can you indulge me? Even for just a bit?"
  452. "Pretty sure you've got practice for something or other."
  453. >"That can wait. I have something more important I want to take care of right now."
  454. >After a little more back and forth, you agree and make the trek back to her house
  455. >Not that it's especially far from yours, the same neighborhood, only two streets removed
  456. >But even still, walking through the door feels like moving into a different world
  457. "Ah, your dad finished up the new trophy case?"
  458. >Rainbow gives you a small shove towards the stairs
  459. >"Stop staring and start walking! We're working on Dash Time right now."
  460. >You offer a token resistance all the way to her bedroom
  461. >Once you're through the doorway, however, your stomach drops
  462. >The space is filled with the distant smell of faded sweat and fresh girl
  463. >Your belly tightens
  464. >Rainbow pushes past you and flops onto the bed
  465. >Rolling onto her back, she clutches a pillow tight to her chest, unable to hide her smile
  466. >"Omigosh I can't believe you're here, again."
  467. "Yeah, who would have thought."
  468.
  469. >As an only child, Rainbow has a sizable room, big enough to fit a full size couch
  470. >Because it's familiar, you move over to the overstuffed seat and stretch out across it
  471. >"Do you want to watch something? Because we can do that."
  472. >Rainbow is sitting on her feet now, watching you with an intensity she usually reserves for match day
  473. >But you wave her over
  474. "No, just, come here."
  475. >You sit up, and Dash moves next to you
  476. >When she settles in, her thigh is pressed against yours
  477. >"Too close?"
  478. "A bit."
  479. >From here, the scent that fills her room is much more obvious, including a touch of fresh-scented hair product
  480. >You put a little distance between the two of you and lean forward
  481. >With one arm around her back
  482. >The other over her middle
  483. >You press your cheek into Rainbow's chest, and close your eyes
  484. >Even through her shirt, you can feel her skin go hot
  485. >You listen as her heart jackhammers away in her chest
  486. >Or maybe it's your own and you can't tell the difference
  487. >The weight of her hands against the back of your head is sudden, but not unwelcome
  488. >"It's okay."
  489. >You nod as tears sting at your eyes
  490. >And you allow yourself to weep freely into the girl's chest
  491. >Every moment hurts as one part of you craves more, and another demands you stop
  492. >But you can't, not now
  493. >Not when you're back here after almost a year
  494. >Even once you're choked out, left only able to shake, Rainbow rubs the back of your neck and cradles your head to her body
  495. >A few times, you're sure she starts crying too, but your mind is too far exhausted to make sense of why
  496. >You can wager a guess, however
  497.
  498. >After an age or an hour, you've finally managed to untangle yourselves from one another
  499. >Dash comes back in with a sports drink, which she forces on you
  500. >"Bottoms up!"
  501. "You couldn't just do water?"
  502. >"Water's boring! Plus, electrolytes!"
  503. "That's a load of hork, you know that, right?"
  504. >You drink the offering anyway
  505. >Once again, silence grows between the two of you
  506. >This time, however, Dash leans into your body
  507. >"So. Can we talk?"
  508. "Mm."
  509. >It's probably about time to do so, but you can't manage more than the grunt
  510. >That doesn't stop Rainbow, however, who takes your silence as a chance to initiate
  511. >"Do you blame me for the accident?"
  512. "No."
  513. >Rainbow's fingers grip your leg
  514. >"I don't believe that."
  515. "...I do, a bit. I blame myself too."
  516. >"It's better to hear you admit it, even if I knew it already."
  517. >She taps lightly on your thigh, leaning further into your chest
  518. >"Do you wish you had been there?"
  519. >It was a stupid question
  520. >The semi had totaled the car
  521. >It was a mess of bits and pieces
  522. >Who wants to go out like that?
  523. "Sometimes."
  524. >Rainbow nods and squeezes your leg again
  525. >"I'm always glad you weren't, even when we weren't talking. At least then I could see you."
  526. >Another round of silence, and Rainbow swings her legs over yours
  527. >Her arms lock around the back of you neck
  528. >"How do you feel about-"
  529. >"About-"
  530. >She sputters a bit, giving a tired laugh
  531. >"Forget it."
  532. "I hate my aunt. We don't get along. I don't like going home, but I don't feel like I belong anywhere else either."
  533. >Rainbow nods, holding her body tighter against yours
  534. >"Yeah?"
  535. "She's a wastrel."
  536. >Rainbow rolls her eyes and groans
  537. >"Ugh, nerd."
  538. >Your chest jerks a bit as you laugh
  539. "Maybe if you read something other than Daring Do..."
  540. >Rainbow turns her gaze up towards you
  541. >She's building up to something
  542. >"Hey, Anon. If it's okay, could we pick up from where we left off last time?"
  543.
  544. "What, now? We just started talking again."
  545. >Rainbow nods her head, resolve growing in her eyes
  546. >"Yeah, now. I felt everything screech to a stop, and now it's stating to move again, and I don't want it to stop. Not yet."
  547. >Rolling her body over on top of yours, she pins your legs between her knees
  548. >"I was here."
  549. "No, you were facing the other way. I remember you were sitting in my lap."
  550. >"Well, maybe I want to do it face to face this time."
  551. >She reaches up, cradling your cheek
  552. >"This way, you can't run out on me."
  553. >You snort and slide your arms around her body again, resting on the swell of her hips
  554. "Fine."
  555. >You look up at her, feeling your heart catch in your throat
  556. "Dash, you know you're one of my best friends, right?"
  557. >"All the way back here?"
  558. "Well if you're not going sit in my lap, I get to decide where to start."
  559. >"Fine. But I'm not moving until I hear what I've been waiting for."
  560. "Fine."
  561. >The girl straddling you looks away for a moment, as though trying to remember her exact words
  562. >"Yeah, you're one of my best friends too, Anon."
  563. "As if I didn't already know."
  564. >"Then don't state the obvious!"
  565. >Dash grins down at you
  566. >"Anyway, we're friends. What about it?"
  567. "Could you, possibly-"
  568. >You pause, your tongue swelling up in your throat as you stare up into Rainbow's eyes
  569. >"Need a drink?"
  570. "Yeah, please."
  571. >"Then finish the line."
  572. >Grinning wide, Rainbow shakes the bottle in you direction
  573. "God. Could you possibly, see something for us past that?"
  574. >"Like roomies?"
  575. >You snatch the bottle out of her hand and take a drink
  576. "I forgot how dense you can be."
  577. >"You're the one who wanted to start back here."
  578. >Rolling your eyes, you put the drink away
  579. "No, like, us. In a relationship."
  580. >For all her bluster and teasing, Rainbow suddenly goes quiet
  581. >"Like, a girlfriend and a boyfriend?"
  582. "Yeah, like that."
  583. >You both pause
  584. >The call never comes
  585. >Rainbow puffs herself up, declaring
  586. >"Well that all sounds nice, but you're going to-"
  587. "I'm in love with you."
  588.
  589. >Dash stares at you, awestruck.
  590. >And then
  591. >"No."
  592. >What?
  593. "What?"
  594. >"No, no you don't get to do that!"
  595. >Rainbow's forehead creases as she leans forward and slaps your shoulder
  596. >"I've been thinking about how to respond ever since then and you can't just cut me off!"
  597. >She gulps, her lip quivering
  598. >"Why do you have to steal all the cool parts? It makes me look lame if the mood isn't right."
  599. "You wanted me to say it. Since when do you care about 'the mood' anyway?"
  600. >"Since always! Mood is everything. It's when you score a goal at the last second, or pull off a C+ after an all nighter because you forgot to study!"
  601. "A C+ is nothing to write home about."
  602. >"That doesn't matter! If there's no mood, no passion then, then-"
  603. >She huffs, and closes her eyes
  604. >"Whatever, this feeling will do."
  605. >When she leans forward, the two of you clock foreheads.
  606. >Muttering a quiet curse, she quickly tilts her head to the side and presses her lips against yours
  607. >She's a warm girl, but lips are somehow even more than her compact body
  608. >Soft too, like they're ready to give way at any moment under pressure
  609. >But even still the kiss continues
  610. >You aimlessly wonder if Zephyr knows how close he came to experiencing a kiss with Rainbow
  611. >Because right now you can't breathe, you can hardly think, and your entire body is burning
  612. >Long seconds give way to a minute before the two of you separate
  613. >Holding your face in her hands, Rainbow nods her head and smiles
  614. >"I love you too."
  615. >On instinct, you see the girl's eyes dart towards the door
  616. >You both wait a long moment before whispering
  617. "I don't think your parents are going to be able to claim they a photograph your first kiss."
  618. >"Good. Then I'll take my second now too."
  619. >This kiss, much like the first, is honest, but in an entirely different way
  620. >Where before there was passion to be found in the waiting, it's now in wanting
  621. >Rainbow wastes no time pressing her tongue against your lips, hesitant in her brief touches, but purposeful all the same
  622.
  623. >Before long you're responding in kind, two familiar bodies exploring each other in unfamiliar ways
  624. >Your hands cradle the girl's well-muscled backside, feeling the heat and twitching of her body as her heartbeat echoes all the way down to her toes
  625. >She arches her upper body into yours, finally breaking away to catch her breath, while seating herself firmly into your hands
  626. >"Ah, woah, need a second. Might have gone too fast."
  627. >Rainbow laughs as her eyes flutter
  628. >You take advantage of the opportunity, and her positioning, to press your lips against her neck
  629. >She makes a quick gasp, her body seeming to lengthen under the unfamiliar touch
  630. >Rather than moving away, she leans in more
  631. >"Ah, Anon?"
  632. "Don't move."
  633. >Rainbow gives an uncertain grunt
  634. "I need to get used to this again. To you. I don't want to feel anxious around you anymore."
  635. >Cradling the back of you head again, Rainbow nods
  636. >"Take your time then. I won't let you free until you get sick when you're away from me."
  637. "That might be too-"
  638. >"Shut up, and get used to it."
  639. >Rainbow laughs, holding your head close to her body
  640. >She shivers as you slide you face, lips, nose and tongue over places you would have just touched in passing before
  641. >As you marvel at the firmness of her collarbone, she melts
  642. >Her shoulders are stiff with tension, caught in a flex that gives only slightly under your exploratory touch
  643. >The scent of skin, slightly moistened ,is enough to make your head spin
  644. >And, truth be told, it's hard to imagine separating yourself from this pleasant world
  645. >But as you move to rest, Rainbow lifts your head and kisses you again
  646. >It doesn't last nearly as long as the previous two, but instead Rainbow moves down and begins pecking your body with her lips
  647. >She even goes so far as to bury her face in your shirt again, knees now resting on the floor as she holds your legs down with the weight of her upper body
  648.
  649. >"I hope you know"
  650. >Rainbow's voice is muffled as she speaks into your middle
  651. >"That it's been really, really hard for me. To go without this."
  652. >At once, her head jerks up
  653. >Eyes bright and sparkling
  654. >She pulls on the bottom of your shirt
  655. >"Up! Pull it up and pull it off!"
  656. "What? Rainbow, come-"
  657. >"Take your shirt off, come on! I'll do it too."
  658. >You gulp and allow yourself to be stripped
  659. >Dressed in an undershirt and pants, you watch as Rainbow clutches the fabric closer to her body and sighs
  660. >"Oh, yeah; you're staying right here with me from now on."
  661. >As she cradles the shirt like a child, you give a small, uncertain cough
  662. "So, uh, shirts."
  663. >"Ah, yeah, sorry. It's okay if I keep it, right?"
  664. >That wasn't what you were referring to, but you eventually agree
  665. >As Rainbow sighs and slides back into position, straddling your lap, she smiles, lifting the hem of her shirt
  666. >"Did you think I was all talk?"
  667. >She starts to pull it up, then laughs, letting go
  668. >"It's, not so easy to do on your own, in front of someone else."
  669. >That's as good a cue as any
  670. >Reaching down, you slide your hands over her hips, and then up
  671. >Hooking your fingers under her shirt, you start to raise it higher, only to be met with an squirming Rainbow pushing down in response
  672. >"Woah buddy, where do you think you're going?"
  673. >The gentle quiver in her voice belies something beyond the confident grin
  674. >"I just said that it feels weird."
  675. "Well that makes two of us."
  676. >You indicate your own state of partial undress and, after a few seconds more of squirming, Rainbow relents
  677. "Lean back a little."
  678. >Scooting back, Rainbow sits on your knees, watching your face intently as you begin to raise her shirt
  679. >It takes a steady eye and hand to appreciate how her hips taper inwards towards her waist
  680. >Dash shivers as her navel is revealed to the colder air, then again as you pause long enough to slide over it, exploring the shallow divot with your fingers
  681. >"Ah, Anon, don't be weird about this."
  682.
  683. >You give her a sly smile and tease her belly a little more until her cheeks are nice and flushed
  684. >Then the shirt starts climbing again
  685. >Her slim waist narrows in, then heads out again as the hem reaches her chest
  686. >Rainbow's lungs begin heaving as you push higher, right up over her breasts
  687. >You pause, then glance between Rainbow and her chest
  688. >The seconds pass, and the girl's eyes begin to grow ever wider, until finally
  689. >"Will you stop staring and say something?"
  690. "Sorry, still getting used to the fact that you have boobs."
  691. >"Omigawd, I've had boobs! I've had boobs since three years ago!"
  692. >A teasing grin slides onto your lips
  693. "Is that so?"
  694. >"Okay, this shirt? It's going down now."
  695. "Ah, no, wait!"
  696. >Sliding you hands under her arms to catch the shirt, you take some time to run your thumbs over the young woman's cup-covered cans
  697. >Rainbow quivers, but pouts all the same
  698. "Sorry. They're a good size, I was just surprised; they're different than I thought they'd look."
  699. >"It's been a rough year. But, you like them?"
  700. >You slide your palms over and give a slight push upwards
  701. "Just the right size for me to handle."
  702. >She snorts and looks away, smiling still
  703. >"I guess."
  704. >Before long her arms are over her head, and she's cast aside her own shirt
  705. >The two of you stare at each other, basking in a state of undess that might have been fine when you were younger or even among your peers, but is now impossibly laden with sexual and physical tension
  706. "So."
  707. >"So."
  708. >You slide a thumb over her bare middle, earning a shiver
  709. >She settles into your lap, pressing her pelvis down against your legs
  710. >"Maybe, this was a little too much."
  711. >Rainbow laughs, placing a hand on your shoulder to steady herself.
  712. >"I mean, you're right, we just stated talking again, and we did all of these things together. Honestly, my brain is just fried!"
  713. "Backing out?"
  714. >Rainbow's body goes stiff at your accusation
  715. >"No, just, thinking. I never even dreamed we might get this far again. So-"
  716.
  717. >In the distance, you can hear a car door slam
  718. >Rainbow is up like a bolt, eyes wide
  719. >"Shit! That must be mom!"
  720. >Grabbing her shirt from the sofa, she quickly pulls it back on
  721. >You do the same, but as you're getting it it over your head, she smacks your arm
  722. >"The heck are you doing, Anon? That's mine!"
  723. >You glance at the shirt and frown
  724. "Pretty sure it fit me when I walked in."
  725. >"No, dingus! You're leaving that shirt with me. Hang on."
  726. >She hurries over to the bed
  727. >A slamming door shakes the house and the panic in the room grows
  728. >At last, Rainbow lets loose a victorious cry
  729. >"Got it!"
  730. >And tosses you a rather well-worn shirt you haven't seen in years
  731. >Not having the time nor energy to put up an argument, you struggle to pull on the too-small shirt
  732. >Seconds pass, and there's a quick rap of knuckles on the door
  733. >You hop to your feet as it slides open
  734. >"Oh, Anonymous! What a surprise."
  735. >Windy gives you her usual grin, looking you up and down
  736. >"Seems like you're in good health. Shirt's a little small though, don't you think?"
  737. "Yeah, a bit."
  738. >You try to keep taking shallow breaths, out of concern that you'll rip the belly-baring t-shirt in two.
  739. >"Aw, it's so great to see you two together again."
  740. >In an instant, the phone is out and Windy takes a quick picture
  741. >"That's just cute. Well, I'll let you two have your fun, so just keep the door open."
  742. >"Yeah, uh, sure mom!"
  743. >And like that, the moment passes
  744. >Rainbow lets out a sigh of relief as she closes her eyes
  745. >"Okay, glad we decided to slow down before she showed up."
  746. "I guess so. That's not something I would want to explain."
  747. >Rainbow nods, and then her phone chirps
  748. >Taking it out, she looks down, and you see the color drain from her face
  749. "Dash?"
  750. >"Gimme a minute."
  751. >The girl holds up one finger, and then steps out of the room
  752. >You can hear the flurry of footsteps descending the stairs, and then
  753. >"Dashie's First Hickey?! Mom, take this post down now!"
  754. >"Aw, don't be like that sweetie, it's adorable!"
  755.
  756. >"But my friends will see it!"
  757. >"Ooh, should I tag them, too?"
  758. >"Too? Who did you tag already?"
  759. >"Ah look, it got a like from Nana!"
  760. >"Mom!"
  761. >You collapse on the couch, unable to hold back a laugh
  762. >Closing your eyes, you listen to the distant drone of mother and daughter bickering
  763. >Your heart aches a bit at the sound
  764. >After a few minutes, it becomes apparent that Rainbow is having more trouble than she bargained for
  765. >Leaving the bedroom, you start down the stairs and to the door
  766. >Rainbow skids out from the kitchen, socks hissing against the wooden floor
  767. >"Are-are you going?"
  768. "Yeah, I don't want to overstay my welcome."
  769. >"Oh."
  770. >Rainbow follows you down with her eyes
  771. >When you stop in front of her, she grins
  772. >"Then, I guess this means I'll see you tomorrow."
  773. "I guess so."
  774. >"Ah, Anonymous."
  775. >Windy peeks from around the corner, behind the stairs
  776. >"Are you headed home already? Not staying for dinner?"
  777. "It's probably rude to drop by uninvited. I'll give you notice, next time."
  778. >"Next time, huh?"
  779. >Windy adopts a familiar, smug smile
  780. >"Well I'll be looking forward to it. I'm sure Dashie will too."
  781. >"Omigawd. I need to get out of her before she makes me gag."
  782. >Rainbow rolls her eyes and pushes you towards the door
  783. >You pull on you shoes from the porch
  784. >"Hey, Anon?"
  785. "Yeah?"
  786. >She looks tongue-tied for a moment, and finally says
  787. >"I love you."
  788. >You grin, and give her a peck on the lips
  789. "That was a pretty lame delivery. Where's the mood?"
  790. >"Maybe everything doesn't have to be perfectly timed. Do you accept it or not?"
  791. "Yeah, I love you too."
  792. >Another round of goodbyes, this one a bit more awkward than the last, and you're headed down the block, to your own home
  793. >On paper at least
  794. >You've still got a while before you can claim the estate
  795. >Until then, it belongs to the woman in the master bedroom
