- # Instructions on how to install & set-up
- 1. Download Bloody Trapland from Steam
- * Note: I recommend installing to the internal SSD, not an external SD card, or else you'll need to use the terminal later on.)
- 2. Before launching the game, in the Properties menu (go to the ⚙ icon next to the 🎮 icon), go to Compatibility, and force it to use Proton 4.11-13.
- 3. Change into desktop mode (can be done by holding down the power button.)
- 4. Open Steam, launch Bloody Trapland, and give it a couple minutes to partially install, but it will fail, so after a couple minutes, quit the game (press Stop in Steam).
- 5. Search for and install Protontricks from the Discover store app (you can find the Discover app in the Start menu.)
- 6. Launch the Protontricks GUI app (can find it in the Start menu after installing it).
- * Note: Upon opening, if you have an SD card, it will warn you that it can't write to it. That's fine to ignore if Bloody Trapland is installed onto the internal SSD — otherwise you'll have to follow its instructions (which require using the terminal.)
- 7. In the Protontricks GUI app,
- * select Bloody Trapland
- * choose "Select the default wineprefix"
- * then "install Windows DLL or component"
- * then "xna40".
- 8. Give it some time, and you will get the following messages, just tap OK for each of them
- * Note:there will be a fair amount of time between each error message where it seems like nothing is happening, but it indeed will still be installing, it just takes a long time:
- * "Working around wine bug 30718 error."
- * "This package (dotnet40) may not fully work on a 64-bit installation. 32-bit prefixes may work better."
- * "dotnet40 does not yet fully work or install on wine. Caveat emptor."
- * "Working around wine bug 34803 error."
- * "Running /home/deck/.var/app/com.github.Matoking.protontricks/cache/protontricks/proton/Proton 4.11/bin/wineserver -w. This will hang until all wine processes in prefix=/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/257750/pfx terminate"
- 9. After tapping OK for each of those error messages and giving it some time, the .NET Framework 4 Setup window will pop up. Tap "I have read and accept the license terms" and then tap "Install".
- * This will take a long time. You'll get the following message, just tap OK:
- * "Running /home/deck/.var/app/com.github.Matoking.protontricks/cache/protontricks/proton/Proton 4.11/bin/wineserver -w. This will hang until all wine processes in prefix=/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/257750/pfx terminate"
- 10. After some time, the XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0 Setup Wizard window will appear. Accept the terms, and install it.
- 11. Wait some time, and then you can close out of Winetricks.
- 12. Launch Steam, and switch Bloody Trapland's compatibility layer back to a more recent version of Proton (7.0-5 worked for me — again, in the Properties (gear icon) menu, under Compatibility).
- 13. Next, in the game's Properties menu (⚙ icon), go to General > Launch Options, and enter the following:
- `PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%`
- * Tip: since you're still in Desktop Mode, you'll have to press the STEAM button + X to bring up the on-screen keyboard.
- 14. Launch Bloody Trapland. You'll get a rundll32.exe error, with a message "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application", but just tap OK and it will launch after some time and play (mostly) without further issues from what I can tell.
- * Note: Steam will say that this game requires a key for activation. It will have a button to copy it. Later, once in-game, it will ask you for it, and you can open the on-screen keyboard (STEAM button + X) and paste it.
- ## Note
- Every time the game launches, you'll get an error message that cannot be dismissed with a controller (touchpad works though in Desktop Mode). Unfortunately, it makes it quite difficult to do couch co-op with friends in Game Mode without a mouse due to that, though that can be worked around by opening Controller Settings and changing/editing a layout so that you have a mouse click mapped and a trackpad).
- In any case, after that initial warning, the game has played for me mostly without issues.
- Special thanks to [Liothe for discovering](https://www.protondb.com/app/257750#bSi9QYe6of) how to get this game running. I hope this write-up helps any Steam Deck users without a keyboard.
