  57. In France, the Porter family is slaughtered while camping in the woods and only Claire Porter survives seriously wounded. She reports that her husband Henry and her son Peter have been eaten alive by a strong man. The eremite Talan Gwynek that lives in the woods with his mother is arrested by the police accused of being the killer. The defense attorney Kate Moore is assigned to defend Talan and she comes to the police station with her investigator Eric Sarin and the animal expert Gavin Flemyng to interview Talan. The unwilling police inspector Klaus Pistor is sure that Talan is the murderer but has to let Kate and her team work. There is turmoil in the precinct and Gavin is scratched by Talan. Then they visit Talan's mother Mrs. Gwynek and they learn that Talan has a rare disease. Further, the government wants her lands to dispose nuclear waste and her husband has recently died in car accident. Soon Eric discloses that the death of Mr. Gwynek was suspicious and Pistor was in charge of the investigation. When Kate succeeds in sending Talan to a hospital for examination, she discovers the effects of Talan's disease and is the responsible for the next events.
  58. A defense attorney begins to suspect that there might be more to her client, who is charged with the murders of a vacationing family, than meets the eye.
  59. A movie that starts out as another found-footage film ends up being a classical Werewolf thriller. The final scenes made me think of Thriller with MJ and it ends up with the trembling chick in the forest. She can't stop her screams and the moon is full, and the werewolves are out to get her. The most important thing is that she is a lawyer and ultimately, we all want to see the lawyer get killed in the end (Jurassic Park). THe special FX are really good, complete with jumping out of 20 storey buildings and there is ample amounts of gore to satisfy the gore fan. There are a few good shock scenes but this isn't a shocker movie. I classify it as a thriller, because it revolves around the mystique of the werewolf. It is spun in a cool way though being that the setting isn't just in dark forests, but it also in the big city.
  60. Wer isn't a pseudo-documentary or a "found footage" film, but it holds its narrative on similar techniques, employing hand-held camera and "improvised" video sources, such a security systems and TV news. For the rest, I found it an excellent horror film, which offers us a werewolf perspective which is simultaneously classic on its mythology and innovative on its presentation. Director William Brent Bell achieved a tense atmosphere, where the contrast between modern civilization and archaic folklore obstructs rational thought and confuses "reality" with myth. A.J. Cook brings a solid performance in the leading role, and I also liked the work from the rest of the cast, highlighting Brian Scott O'Connor, who is appropriately threatening in his character, and Vik Shay, who makes something completely different to what he used to in the TV series Chuck. The special effects studio Almost Human complements the realistic tone of the film with a creature who is simultaneously credible and respectful of European tradition, besides of delicious gory moments and some disturbing corpses. In conclusion, Wer is one of the most innovative werewolf films I have seen a long time. Its combination of traditional and documentary techniques was a valid decision which intensifies the suspense and the energy of the film without confusing its narrative. Bell's previous films had been the execrable Stay Alive and the mediocre The Devil Inside, but he has fully redeemed himself with Wer, and I will definitely be looking forward to his next film, with the hope of finding out that this film wasn't an accident, but the start of a new tendency in his career.
