  1. [23:32:36] <Eight-bit> Welcome back to another interview segment with your favorite indie game developers! I'm Evon Mailao, and Iwith me today are Mr. and Mrs. Tomlin, freelance game critics and celebrating their honeymoon
  2. [23:33:13] <Eight-bit> Our guest today is Mr. Crono Silverius, who amongst indie developers is considered a giant.
  3. [23:33:29] <Eight-bit> We're here today to ask you about your developing title, Kings of Strife.
  4. [23:33:44] <SilverCrono> Hello there, and thank you for having me! I'm honored.
  5. [23:33:46] <Eight-bit> (back me up cause I'm not as good as crono at this >>;)
  6. [23:33:50] <NeoZEROX> (Again making me take her name.... am I the woman of this relationship. >> )
  7. [23:34:53] <SilverCrono> Kings of Strife, for all the inexperienced who'll be reading this, is my personal pet project that I've been working on for a little over a year now. The first thirteen chapters are currently available on PSN and Steam, with more on the way!
  8. [23:36:04] <NeoZEROX> What made you want to start this pet protect of yours to begin with?
  9. [23:36:12] <NeoZEROX> *project
  10. [23:36:23] <NeoZEROX> (derp de derp >> )
  11. [23:36:38] <SilverCrono> Ah, well it started when I was on the development team for Final Fantasy XIII. Well, less actually developing it and more as an intern who served coffee and was part-time unpaid assistant script writer.
  12. [23:37:10] <SilverCrono> Since then, I started Kings of Strife as a little script project that was inspired by it, but since then I've revamped it into its own personal universe and actualy started developing it. It's still a work in project, though!
  13. [23:37:26] <SilverCrono> *progress
  14. [23:38:21] <Eight-bit> How similar would you say KoS is to Final Fantasy XIII?
  15. [23:38:44] <Eight-bit> Did you find yourself drawing too much from it and having to deviate from your initial plans?
  16. [23:39:18] <SilverCrono> At first, definitely. After I departed from Square Enix, I knew I couldn't have such a close universe. It was even set on Gran Pulse!
  17. [23:39:43] <SilverCrono> Since then, the only things they have in common are the concept of gunblades and crystals, to an extent. Airships also appear, but less as planes and more like flying boats.
  18. [23:41:07] <Eight-bit> Ah, so more of a VIII and IV feel.
  19. [23:41:29] <Eight-bit> What would you say is the most unique aspect of the world of Kings of Strife?
  20. [23:42:17] <SilverCrono> Hm...I really put a lot of work into the depth of the world and the history. Right from the start, a player notices that this is a fully fleshed out world, for the most part, and its rich history is both relevant in the story and eked out through exploration and story mechanics.
  21. [23:42:44] <SilverCrono> It's one of the parts I'm most excited on constantly improving. You'd be hard pressed to find another setting like mine, I'd like to imagine!
  22. [23:44:19] <NeoZEROX> What is the gamplay of Kings of Strife? Is it like Final Fantasy XIII's?
  23. [23:46:00] <SilverCrono> I'd liken it more to a fusion of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy XV. In the overworld, enemies are visible and can be avoided, but once they come in contact with the player, it triggers a seamless meld into a real-time action-filled battle.
  24. [23:46:27] <SilverCrono> The player only controls the main party leader, but they can switch during the battle instantly. Allies are controlled through set AI tactics that can be customized.
  25. [23:47:09] <SilverCrono> The gameplay was very challenging to get right, especially for an indie developer like myself, and it is constantly improving throughout chapters. When the entire thing is finished, I'd like to re-release everything as a single game with the best possibly refined systems.
  26. [23:50:19] <Eight-bit> Does a gameplay focus on a single character compliment a story that does likewise?
  27. [23:50:42] <SilverCrono> (wat)
  28. [23:53:32] <Eight-bit> Would you say that the story, like the gameplay, focuses majorly on the protagonist Crono, much more than other characters?
  29. [23:53:36] <Eight-bit> (sorry x_X)
  30. [23:54:27] <SilverCrono> In the beginning, yes, wholeheartedly. However, as things move on and characters come and go, Crono will have some problems of his own and the narrative will shift perspective a few times.
  31. [23:55:01] <SilverCrono> Also, when more and more threads come into play, eventually the protagonists will merge and the focus will become less character-based and more group-based.
  32. [23:56:42] <NeoZEROX> What about the antagonist, would you like share your plans for them with us?
  33. [23:57:51] <SilverCrono> Haha, which one?
  34. [23:58:28] <SilverCrono> Seriously though, there isn't just one laid in stone...Not yet, anyway. Gin Taoris definitely comes to mind, and I have a lot planned for him. I plan to pull out all the stops on his story, hopefully some you won't see coming.
  35. [23:59:22] <SilverCrono> He also has a dynamic with Crono that'll be memorable. And his companion, Miss Vainia, is a character I'm very excited about. Her gameplay was very fun to work at, and her story is one I'm very proud of as well. She has a long road to go on, and she may seem antagonistic at times, but her goals are pure in heart.
  36. [00:00:02] <SilverCrono> Now as for Ouroboros...Heh, well, let's not go into too much detail there. It's much more fun if you play through the game and explore their origins yourself, because it's very expansive and I've worked very hard on it.
  37. [00:01:33] <Eight-bit> Did you have any goals when developing the protagonists and antagonists in terms of their relationships with each other? Like Crono and Gin, can we expect those two to still have a lot more feuding going on?
  38. [00:03:48] <SilverCrono> Oh yes, they still have a while to go. From the very beginning, I've always wanted their relationship to be tense and scary, even for the player. A type of experience where a player is truly afraid during their boss battles with him. Saying that, though, there will be growth with Crono, and eventually the two will battle as equals.
  39. [00:04:24] <SilverCrono> Also because of their opposite views, Vik and Vainia will develop a rivalry of sorts, although not on the scale of Crono and Gin.
  40. [00:07:18] <Eight-bit> KoS has a lot of shifting between viewpoints as you jump from character to character to introduce plot. How difficult was it for you to divide your attention between several groups of characters at once?
  41. [00:09:21] <SilverCrono> I really had to try not to focus too much on one character or one group of characters, that's for sure. I had a lot of space on my phone taken up with information I kept on KoS, because as you say, early development involved several groups at once. Ideas would come randomly to me, so if I didn't write them down as I did, I either would have lost them or they would have gotten terribly mixed up.
  42. [00:09:40] DSS [45cc1540@gateway/web/freenode/ip.69.204.21.64] has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 250 seconds
  43. [00:09:55] <SilverCrono> Gameplay was a challenge, as well - there had to be a discernable difference between each character's playstyles, between Vik's early reliance on platforming and Crono's reliance with action.
  44. [00:10:52] DSS [45cc1540@gateway/web/freenode/ip.69.204.21.64] has joined ##londlor
  45. [00:12:05] <SilverCrono> (wb)
  46. [00:13:13] <Eight-bit> I personally think the battle scenes in KoS are top-notch. Does detailing a fight flow naturally or require a lot of planning beforehand?
  47. [00:14:46] <SilverCrono> The storyboards start off with a beginning to the battle, some events mid-way, and an end result, along with maybe some dialogue. From there, the writing for it usually comes naturally, yes, albeit after an extended period of work. But the gameplay integration does require a lot of planning, and I usually end up making lots of little sketches to help visualize where I want the action to flow.
  48. [00:16:27] <Eight-bit> (wtf really .-.)
  49. [00:16:47] <SilverCrono> (yes. really. @_@)
  50. [00:20:23] <NeoZEROX> (I can't think of anything else)
  51. [00:20:32] <Eight-bit> (DSS any questions? o uo)
  52. [00:20:41] <Eight-bit> (or Cluna o wo)
  53. [00:21:36] <DSS> (I wasn't introduced >>)
  54. [00:21:44] <SilverCrono> (<_<)
  55. [00:21:55] <NeoZEROX> *Dammit 8bit!*
  56. [00:21:56] <SilverCrono> (late interviewer entry!)
  57. [00:22:05] <NeoZEROX> *( )
  58. [00:23:09] <Cluna> I heard that the Lance Knight has become quite popular since the game's release. Is there anything you can tell us about her?
  59. [00:23:34] <SilverCrono> Ah yes, our enigmatic Lance Knight! I'm really quite surprised by how popular she is, but...I'm not going to complain, haha!
  60. [00:24:49] <SilverCrono> Well, she's not a very /good/ character, in terms of morality. She's fiercely loyal to the Leader of Ouroboros, going so far as to call him her Lord, sort of like a religious devotion, despite his blatant evilness. My whole theme with her is how blind loyalty and religious abuse can lead to extremely negative results, and sometimes blind belief isn't the best thing. She doesn't reallyhave a choice
  61. [00:25:29] <SilverCrono> though, given her upbringing. Well...can't tell you too much about that yet. Spoilers! But I can say she's a very good boss character. Whether fightning against one character or three, she's a very formidable threat. Watch out!
  62. [00:27:00] <Eight-bit> We have an additional interviewer joining us. Mr. Slash, did you want to ask anything?
  63. [00:28:30] <NeoZEROX> (See that as Mr. Slasher
  64. [00:28:33] <NeoZEROX> *)
  65. [00:28:42] <SilverCrono> Mr. Slash of the Deadly Sword companies?! Ah, what an honor! I love your works, sir.
  66. [00:29:12] <DSS> Er
  67. [00:29:47] <DSS> What can you tell us about how KoS relates to the other stories of the rumored trilogy?
  68. [00:31:45] <SilverCrono> Yes, yes, HVC, I'm very excited about that. KoS is the very first story of the trilogy, and while I can't say too much about the other two on principle, I can say that KoS ends up setting the foundation of a flawed world and the idea of magic existing through ancient relics. This is another thread I attempted to intertwine into KoS' long history.
  69. [00:31:57] <SilverCrono> Please support all three! It's worth it, I swear!
  70. [00:33:15] <NeoZEROX> Would any elements of KoS carry over to next part the trilogy?
  71. [00:34:03] <SilverCrono> Like I said, the magic, mostly. I can't really go into that too much because of end-game KoS spoilers, but I can say that the last arc of KoS definitely sets some serious changes to the world and the people in it which carry over to the next stories.
  72. [00:35:38] <NeoZEROX> Very interesting, well I'm looking forward to it
  73. [00:35:58] <SilverCrono> Alright. Anything else, good sirs?
  74. [00:36:32] <Eight-bit> (I'm good ou o)
  75. [00:36:58] <Cluna> ( ^ )
  76. [00:37:44] <NeoZEROX> (^)
  77. [00:38:09] <NeoZEROX> I believe that it.
  78. [00:39:31] <Eight-bit> Thank you for your time, Mr. Silverius, and best wishes.
  79. [00:39:41] <SilverCrono> okay! Thank you very much for the interview. I hope you all look forward to more Kings of Strife, and I'll continue working my hardest on completing it quickly with the best quality I can muster.
