8.
9. Power Set:
10. - Kyle has no super powers of his own, and has to wear his Power Ring to use its powers.
11.
12. Skill Set:
13. - Indomitable Will: Rayner has what is considered the most basic requirement to being a Green Lantern: an incredibly strong belief in his morals and a nearly undefeatable willpower. Indomitable Will, along with making him a candidate for the Green Lantern Corps allows him to control his emotions better than most people, utilize his Power Ring to the fullest, and more easily resist techniques such as mind control.
14.
15. -Kyle has been trained by the Corps to not only have the mental techniques to control his Power Ring to the best of his ability, but to be in excellent physical condition and have some technique in hand-to-hand combat.
16. -Thanks to his background as a skilled artist, Rayner has a very active imagination. This, combined with his Indomitable Will, allows him to create constructs that are much more elaborate and powerful than many Lanterns’ due to the Power Ring being limited only by one’s imagination and mastery of willpower. This skill makes him almost a complete master of his Power Ring, and his constructs appear almost like sketches being drawn to life.
17.
18. -White Light: This is an ability as of yet unknown to Kyle, but the very reason that Ganthet chose him to bear the then-last Green Lantern Power Ring. He has the potential within him to control the entirety of the Emotional Spectrum, combining all seven colors into the White Light of Life. Mastering this power creates the potential for Rayner to become the most powerful Lantern in existence, with the White Light increasing the power of his ring greatly, and even the capability to raise the dead. However, since even the existence of the other colors other than Green and Yellow on the Spectrum are, as of now, completely unknown to him, it will take him some time to discover this ability. Even then, he will have to master the other members of the Emotional Spectrum, which will be a difficulty journey, since only a few come easily to him. Having this unique control over the Spectrum grants him the qualities necessary to gain access to the other powers, much like his Indomitable Will does for the Green Lantern Corps. These are:
19. --Love
20. --Compassion
21. --Hope
22. --Intimidation
23. --Obsessive Avarice
24. --Boundless Rage
25.
26. Equipment:
27. -Green Lantern Power Battery: Like all Green Lanterns, Kyle has to periodically charge his Power Ring using the Green Lantern Power Battery, which itself draws power from the Central Power Battery on Oa. He keeps his Power Battery safely hidden in his apartment.
28.
29. -Green Lantern Power Ring: The Power Ring allows its bearer to will into existence constructs made out of pure green light (really Oan energy supplied by the Central Power Battery). What constructs can be made, their power, durability, and complexity is limited only by the user’s imagination and strength of will. Luckily, Rayner not only has the incredibly strong willpower needed to be a Green Lantern, but also is highly imaginative, leading to him being able to solve problems in unique, and to his enemies, unpredictable ways, such as characters from popular manga and anime. Constructs can range from simple blasts of energy, to weapons made of hard light, to guns. The only limit is what Rayner can come up with. The Ring is also capable of granting flight, and a force field that emulates the wearer’s native atmosphere that allows them to travel through the vacuum of space, also protecting them from heat, cold, friction, gravitational forces, and etcetera. The Guardians of the Universe have also given all Power Rings the ability to translate every known language in the universe, act as a communication devices between members of the Corps, making the Rings not only a weapon, but a multipurpose tool used for any situation.
30.
31. Vulnerabilities:
32. -Yellow Impurity/Parallax Fear Anomaly: Due to the Central Power Battery being corrupted by what is known as the Yellow Impurity, or the Parallax Fear Anomaly due to the Entity trapped within the Central Power Battery that causes the corruption, all Green Lanterns are weak to the color yellow, and the Fear Energy it represents. However, if the willpower of the user is strong enough, they can resist this weakness.
33.
34. -Rage Vulnerability: The power of the red energy of Rage has been known to corrupt the aura of a Green Lantern. This weakness is able to be overcome via the same methods as the Yellow Impurity.
35.
36. -Recharge Protocol: A Green Lantern has to recharge their Ring using the Green Lantern Power Battery from time to time, to make sure that it doesn’t run out of energy. If Rayner isn’t careful, his Ring could lose power at inopportune moments.
37.
38. Personality:
39. "My name is Kyle Rayner. When I was a kid, I never could decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. Now I know. I'm Green Lantern. I'm a hero."
40.
41. Kyle loves being a superhero, often taking on his job as a member of the Green Lantern Corps with an enthusiasm that tends to either inspire or annoy his fellow Corpsman. He recognizes the magnitude of the Corps’ mission to protect the universe, though, and while acting lighthearted, takes his status seriously. He never has an arrogant attitude or feels that he is more important than anyone else. His cheerful demeanor and tendency to crack jokes not only lightens the mood of those around him, but can anger his opponents, catching them off guard. Kyle easily makes friends, and greatly enjoys meeting new people, another reason he loves being a Green Lantern.
42.
43. He is also one of the few Green Lanterns that will readily admit that he does feel fear. It is his ability to admit this fear and control it that grants him his exceptional willpower, and allows him to protect the ones he cares for, and sometimes even overpower the Yellow Impurity. He is known for being considered a hopeless romantic, having idealized morals and a sense of chivalry. Rayner tends to flirt with any girl he is even relatively interested in, though any who actually becomes his girlfriend he shoes genuine caring and love for.
44.
45. The Green Lantern constantly pushes himself to be a better person in every way, be it his art, constructs, or simply his own personality. This can lead to bouts of self-loathing, though he always manages to lift himself out of these with the help of his loved ones. Because of his caring and hope for all living things, as well as his ability to admit fear, Kyle Rayner is an ideal member of the Green Lantern Corps, and his exceptionally strong willpower makes him among the strongest of those chosen to bear the responsibility of the Power Ring.
46.
47. Biography:
48.
49. Before being inducted into the Green Lantern Corps, Kyle Rayner was a gifted graphic artist living in New York, struggling to make ends meet. However, despite his money issues, he was happy with his career, having always been a big fan of cartoons and comic books, especially manga and anime, particularly those featuring giant mechas. Unbeknownst to him, however, there was a conflict taking place that held the very fate of the universe at stake. Hal Jordan, once believed to be one of the greatest Green Lanterns, had gone insane, and killed almost the entirety of the Green Lantern Corps, including all but one of the Guardians of the Universe and destroyed the Central Power Battery as well. The surviving Guardian, Ganthet, took the remaining Green Lanterns into hiding on the sentient planet Mogo, whose power was great enough to keep Hal Jordan away for the time being. They would hide until such a time when they could rally their powers to defeat their former Corps member. Then he left, searching the universe for one capable of defeating the former Green Lantern-turned-villain. With the help of the planet-Lantern Mogo, Ganthet located an energy signature, one that held all colors of the Emotional Spectrum; most notably Willpower.
50.
51. Ganthet headed for a planet in Sector 2814, the very one that Hal Jordan called home: Earth.
52.
53. That night, Kyle Rayner was getting some fresh air outside of a bar he was visiting with some friends and girlfriend Alexandra DeWitt when he spotted a green falling star crossing the sky. The strangely colored comet suddenly changed direction, heading right towards him! The bright green light stopped in front of him (also startling a drunken hobo) and dispersed, revealing itself to be Ganthet, who had located Rayner’s Indomitable Will. Ganthet informed Kyle of the situation with Hal Jordan, and that the Corps needed him to survive. Not entirely realizing the severity of the situation, Rayner jumped at the chance of becoming a hero like those he had idolized for years. Using much of his remaining power, Ganthet created a Power Ring; the last Power Ring. Despite his over eagerness, Ganthed saw great potential within Rayner when he easily took to creating constructs with his Power Ring, something that he considered not at all different from creating art. The last Guardian knew he had chosen correctly.
54.
55. However, he did know that Kyle wasn’t ready to face Jordan yet. He would need what training the remaining Lanterns could give him, and he knew that, despite the hope he saw in this new Green Lantern, he could very well die. Ganthet would give him time to come to terms with his new powers on Earth, where there were heroes a plenty to help him. It would take some time for Hal Jordan to gain enough power to take on Mogo, anyways. Promising to return, Ganthet flew back into space, returning to the sentient planet’s safety.
56.
57. And take to his powers he did. Kyle fought criminals of all kinds, even teaming up with several of the superheroes he idolized, most notably Superman. Unfortunately, he would soon come to know the downsides of being a hero.
58. Little more than common criminals broke into the apartment that he and Alexandra shared. However, she returned home unexpectedly, causing the thieves to panic and overpower and unintentionally kill her. Still in a panic, and having never intended to kill her nor wanting to be caught for murder, they hastily hid the body in a refrigerator and made their escape.
59.
60. When Rayner returned his apartment, he made the horrific discovery. Alex was dead. Enraged, he immediately went after and tracked down the criminals who had killed her, deciding to show them why they should fear a Lantern’s light. He beat them to within an inch of their lives, but they begged for their lives. Though he knew not having the intention didn’t excuse them from their murder, Kyle Rayner didn’t kill them, realizing that his Ring was for bringing others to justice, not establishing his own. He turned the criminals in.
61.
62. Though it took many months, he eventually recovered from his loves’ death, moving on and still capable of finding joy in his work as an artist and Green Lantern. In the meantime, Ganthet returned. It was time to defeat Hal Jordan.
63. Taking Kyle to Mogo, Ganthet managed to rally the remaining Lanterns, consisting of many veterans such as Kilowog, Tomar-Re, and the other two Lanterns of Sector 2814; Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Knowing that they were on borrowed time without the Central Power Battery, they had all been conserving the power of their Rings until the right time: now.
64.
65. Though the conflict was intense, Hal Jordan was overpowered by the Lanterns, particularly thanks to the efforts of Kyle Rayner, who’s strength from admitting his fears to himself, and even Jordan. His strength came from realizing his fear, and working through it anyways for the greater good. In turn, it was revealed that it was not truly the former Green Lantern who had decimated the Corps: it was the Entity of Fear, Parallax. It had been influencing Jordan for months from its prison within the Central Power Battery (the source of the Yellow Impurity, which was later renamed the Parallax Fear Anomaly), eventually holding enough power over him to possess him. Working with the remaining Green Lanterns, Kyle managed to purge Parallax from within Jordan with their combined Willpower, and Ganthet created a new Central Power Battery with which to once again trap the Fear Entity. In doing so, he revived the formerly dead Guardians of the Universe and Green Lanterns. Additionally, to make sure that such a thing could never destroy them so easily again, the Corps opened up its once very restrictive ranks to new members, and slowly began expanding. For his major efforts in very well saving the entire universe, Kyle Rayner was awarded a position In the Green Lantern Corps Honor Guard, the best of the best in the Corps who protected every Sector, not just their home one. Hal Jordan was reinstated into the Corps as well, the Guardians giving him a full pardon, knowing now that he was acting against his will.
66.
67. It has been over a year since the revival of the Corps, and Kyle had fully integrated into his position as a Green Lantern and hero. He has even come to look up to Hal Jordan, who he still considers a personal hero, has become fast friends with Guy Gardner, and has come to see Ganthet as a surrogate father. He is even a part-time member of the Justice League. And though there will always be the lingering sadness over Alex’s death, he knows that she would never want him to despair forever, and has taken joy in his life In memorial to her and for his own sake.
68.
69. Little does he realize that his role in this universe is far larger than he could ever expect, and that the time will come where he will have to harness the power lying dormant within himself.
70.
71. Through it all, Green Lantern will always be here for those he cares for, Earth, and the universe that he has sworn to protect.
72.
73. Sample Post:
74.
75. Manhattan, New York City
76.
77. The sirens passing by could be heard from his third-floor apartment.
78.
79. Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern 2814.4, member of the Green Lantern Corps Honor Guard, and most importantly of all, handsome trendy artist, looked out his window. He shook his head.
80.
81. "You'd think in a city like this, they'd learn after a while."
82.
83. He hopped over to his desk, which was covered in a computer, drawing tablet, several sketchbooks, and all kinds of odds and ends (including an action figure of his very own self, even if the outfit was a bit outdated. He once again realized that he really should be being payed royalties for that), and pressed his hand to a section of wall behind it just so...
84.
85. And the square of drywall popped right off, revealing a small space behind it just big enough to contain two very important items: his Power Ring and Battery.
86.
87. He put on the Power Ring, and held the lantern-shaped Battery in his other hand, placing the Ring into its opening.
88.
89. "In brightest day, in blackest night,
90. No evil shall escape my sight.
91. Let those who worship evil's might
92. Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!"
93.
94. There was a flickering of light from within the Power Battery as his ring was fully charged. Kyle was surrounded in a green aura, and his clothes were covered in the uniform of the Green Lantern Corps (though with some modification that, in his humble opinion, looked much better than the standard).
95.
96. "Ring energy: one-hundred percent." Chirped a voice from his Power Ring.
97.
98. Making sure to fly out of the window in his bedroom, the one that faced conveniently away from the street, Green Lantern flew after the criminals that appeared to be in some exciting car chase with the authorities.
99.
100. "No car chases on my watch."
101.
102. Flying faster than any earthly car, Green Lantern flew after the criminals. It looked like there two in the car. The one in the passenger seat was aiming out the window, firing his pistol backwards at the police. Though the frankly terrible driving of his partner made sure that he very rarely even got close to hitting the patrol car. Still, he couldn't take chances.
103.
104. Flying up behind the criminals' car, Kyle pointed his Ring forwards, and there was instantly a large medieval shield construct between him and the police. Bullets pinged and ricocheted off of it, but they did little to weaken it.
105.
106. The gunman looked back to his partners, in more of a panic than ever before.
107.
108. "Sh** man, it's Green Lantern! We're screwed!"
109.
110. "Keep it cool!" The driver yelled back, clearly not keeping his own advice. "We can lose 'im!"
111.
112. "How do you "lose" a guy who can fly?!"
113.
114. The argument gave Green Lantern the distraction he needed to get closer, now that the police were no longer threatened. Flying up alongside the car, he tilted sideways, pointing his ring now at one of the back wheels. One of those boot things they use to impound cars appeared on the wheel, and the sudden forced stop on one side caused the car to start spinning, the men screaming inside.
115.
116. An entire team of large football players appeared in front of the car, kneeling in formation.
117.
118. "Hike!" Green Lantern yelled, and all the constructs charged at the car, tackling it anywhere the could. The hood, the wheels, some jumped on the back. Kicking at the ground, eventually they're cleat-clad feet dragged the vehicle stopped spinning, and rolled on its side. The football players pushed it back onto all four wheels gently, and even took the men out of the car, dusting them off in an oddly friendly manner.
119.
120. Kyle floated to the ground in front of him, and the constructs disappeared. The police stopped right behind them.
121.
122. "Alright, guys," he said to the criminals. "time to go. Just a tip for next time: don't try to steal stuff in a city filled with superheroes."
123.
124. The policemen cuffed the criminals, who looked pretty depressed. Kyle was almost sorry for them.
125.
126. One of the policemen looked at him as the other led the two to the patrol car.
127.
128. "Thanks for the assist, Green Lantern. But, uh, what're ya doing so far out of Coast City?"
129.
130. "Actually, you're getting me mistaken for the other guy. Y'see, there's a whole bunch of use out there. We're, uh..." He paused, a realization dawning on him. "We're police, basically. For space. All of it, actually."
131.
132. "And I thought my job was hard." The friendly officer joked. "Still, sorry about the confusion."
133.
134. "Hey, no problem. Happens more than you think. I'll be seein' you, officer." The Green Lantern floated off into the sky. What a nice guy. Better than some of the others he had met, at least. He had no idea why so many people hated that Spider-Man guy.
135.
136. Later...
137.
138. Kyle's legs dangled off the roof of his apartment building, a sketchpad on his lap. The page was filled with a sketch of that cool policeman from earlier, among some various doodles of other doodles.
139.
140. He sighed, content. Despite all the excitement of being a Green Lantern, this was his favorite part of the day. Just relaxing, and doing what he loved most. A cup of coffee next to him, a pencil in his hand, and a beautiful sunset in the distance.
141.
142. A perfect end to another perfect day.
