After the destruction of the Second Death Star and the apparent death of the Sheev Palpatine, the Galactic Emperor, the Empire was left deprived of its keystone and ruler and went into a death spiral. By ten ABY, the Empire was on the verge of total destruction, all that remained was an ineffectual rump state centered on the heavily fortified Galactic Core and a number of warlords on the fringes, including the military Genius Thrawn, who was once a loyal Imperial Grand Admiral but who no longer recognized those who claimed the Imperial throne.

In the mysterious Deep Core, the Emperor's most loyal followers gathered. A collection of diehard admirals, courtiers, and Dark Side adepts. In the heart of the Deep Core, on the tropical throneworld of Byss, the long awaited moment came. The Emperor was reborn, his spirit transferred countless light years to a younger clone body.

From his hidden staging area, the Dark Empire grew, fleets were built and assembled and plans laid. When the time was right, these fleets struck out at the former capital of Coruscant.  There, a great battle was fought against a warlords fleet which was virtually annihilated by a chaotic force storm conjured by the Emperor.

Once the world was secure, and the Emperor's identity confirmed, the Imperial Remnant, under Director of Intelligence Ysanne Isard rejoined the Empire, all save a few splinter warlords on the fringes of the Dark Empire.

With his forces newly reinvigorated, a campaign of reconquest was undertaken, worlds like Brentaal, Kuat, and Carida were retaken. Using these resources, a plan to conquer the New Republic, called Operation Shadow Hand was put into place, the end goal being to annihilate the Rebellion in a swift series of actions.

During all this, while the navy was rebuilt, the Emperor took for himself a new apprentice, the former Emperor's Hand, Mara Jade was christened Darth Cythera, a Sith Lord. In addition, his small cadre of force imbued followers were reorganized into four branches. The Shadow Mages under Sly Moore, responsible for prophecy and Sith alchemy, the  Komissari who monitor the military for disloyalty, under Brakiss, the Inquisition, responsible for recruiting more force sensitive under Vende Amenge, and the Blackguard, the combat arm of the Dark Side Hierarchy, formerly led by Sedriss before his death in a duel against Cythera, now run by Brakiss, one of your most promising disciples.

Cythera and others were sent on a series of unsuccessful missions to kill Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, namely to Luke's hidden Jedi Academy on Rhen Var where he claimed Cythera's arms in a duel.

Meanwhile, a young officer and Baroness, Lady Alana Tyrna, daughter of Aldon Tyrna, the Minister of Alien Labor and a close supporter of Plapatine's, rose through the ranks of the Imperial Navy, ultimately becoming a division commander in 3rd Fleet. Her career is checkered, marked with soaring triumphs and bitter failures, with a long line of both friends and enemies behind her, but she is certainly one of the most promising figures in the Navy at this point.

After a series of bold and climactic battles, the Dark Empire has all but crushed the Rebellion, now its sights are turned to the other warlord states around it.
