  1. Hello everyone! Foo here and today I'm going to be talking about Sword and Shield. One of the biggest and most controversial talking points about these games is the fact that not all Pokemon are going to be in it - some people are incandescent that they can't use their favourite Pokemon.
  2. Today I want to talk about more things that could be removed from the game, but instead of provoking such a violently negative response, removing these things would more likely cause a huge collective sigh of relief from Pokemon fans...
  3. I want to talk to you about 4 bad mechanics I don't like that I want removed from the game.
  4.
  5. 1. Freeze
  6. Status conditions play a very crucial role in Pokemon battles, with Toxic being important to whittle down bulky Pokemon, or burn being able to neuter powerful physical attackers. They add a depth to strategy and make for some really interesting battle strategies and Pokemon sets.
  7. But there are some problematic statuses too. Paralysis can be used to slow the opponent down, which is a very useful and healthy mechanic, but it also has a rubbish side effect of potential preventing the sufferer from moving 1/4 times - this is unpredicatble and luck based. Worse still is sleep which incapacitates pokemon for 1-3 turns, however even this has some merit in the move Rest and can be mitigated by using Sleep Talk. But by far the most obnoxious status is freeze. Pretty much all attacks that freeze only have a 1/10 chance to activate, so even the user doesn't expect to inflict this status, and when it activates, your pokemon is useless unless it gets a 1/5 chance to thaw each turn. It can be thawed by certain moves or sunlight, but without this freeze is completely luckbased and broken and I would love to see this mechanic removed. The status itself could stay, but just change the mechanic to something less chance based and more balanced! e.g.

  9. 2. Critical hits
  10. These are annoying both in-game and in competitive battles - how many shiny fails have been made due to critical hits? How many nuzlockes have been lost to crits? How many crucial battles have been thrown away to an unlikely, unpredictable critical hit?
  11. In competitive, due to it being luck based, critical hits mean that it's not always the best battler that wins, but simply the luckiest, which is not very healthy for the competitive scene.
  12. I wouldn't remove all critical hits - some critical hit based pokemon sets are really cool and fun to use - you can boost critical hit chance with items e.g. scope lens, abilities e.g. Super Luck and moves e.g. Focus Energy. But I would advocate for the base critical hit rate to be reduced from ~4% of all attacks to 0%!
  13. This is the one of the 4 that I am least sold on, however, for 2 reasons - it makes battles and nuzlockes more exciting with the constant threat of critical hits ruining or saving the day. And it also motivates players to continue playing even in dire circumstances to potentially clutch a battle e.g. in the face of a boosted defense pokemon. But that doesn't mean that I won't let out a little whimper when my win condition gets KO'd on a crucial turn!
  14.
  15. 3. Damage rolls
  16. Have you ever noticed that if one pokemon uses an attack against another
  17.
  18. 4. Evasion
