- Many things in the world's water ways are the same as those on land; in many more ways they are completly alien. However they have commonalities that are surprising at times. Just as the land is haunted by many supernatural forces so to are the seas; and not only those that cross between sea and land; the mermaid, selkie, undine, even the nuckelevee; however unlike many a human fantasy the mermaid is not mankind's underwater counterpart. Indeed even when accounted for by variety and similar in shape only variants most mermaids are either true supernatural monsters created by other beings or are members of an ancient marine race that is for the most part seperated from the modern world retreated into their own seclusion and advancements deep in the world's oceans venturing out more out of boredom and thrills than a part of this world. Instead what could pass for humanity's oceanic counterpart; at least up until the 1800's in terms of technological and political simularities is a species spread about the world with no name that can be spelled out with these letters in its native tongue (or lack there of), and known by various legendary names across the world; rather they can best be described either as fish men or frog men depending on the scale type seperated by salt and fresh water.
