- “2017-02-25 Saturday: 1 Color”
- ---
- Homework: 11-12 Test (you don’t need to do this if you won’t be in my class next session, but even if you’re not, you can do it and I’ll check it for you.)
- ---
- p. 9 - Discuss parts 2 and 3 with your partner. What different things do those colors mean for you? Are there other colors that you associate with a specific meaning?
- “grey” and “gray” are two different spellings for that color, and for some people the words refer to different shades
- (People also sometimes have a difference between “further” and “farther”, and between the two different pronunciations of “aunt”.)
- ---
- “over there” is far from both the speaker and the listener, and can be accompanied by pointing to the place
- “there” is far from the speaker but may be near the listener, or may be some place you’re talking about but can’t point to
- ---
- p. 10 - Read the article about “Life in Color”
- What are some other ways we use color for each of the three purposes in the article?
- identity: gendered colors, rainbow flag for LGBT identity, national flag colors, work or school uniforms
- decoration: Christmas lights, Halloween and other holiday colors
- messages: black or white for funerals/mourning, traffic light and sign colors, red or white for weddings
- ---
- In the article, what is the difference in verb tense between the paragraph about identity and the paragraph about decoration?
- identity - simple present, because it’s about routines and things that happen regularly or things that are always true
- decoration - mostly present continuous, because it’s about what’s happening right now in the picture
- ---
- Grammar: simple present and present continuous
- p. 11 part 5 - Complete the sentences with the correct simple present or present continuous verbs.
- 1 dress
- 2 is wearing
- 3 says
- 4 gets
- 5 are trying
- 6 get
- 7 don’t eat
- ---
- “I’m not drinking.” = Right now I’m not drinking, for example because I have to drive. It’s temporary.
- “I don’t drink.” = This is always true. I never drink.
- ---
- Present continuous can also be use for what we call the extended present, which is “these days” instead of “right now”. This week / this month, this season, but not forever, still uses present continuous.
- ---
- Types of verbs:
- - long actions = verbs like “live” that always continue for a long time
- There’s not really a difference between simple and continuous.
- - medium actions = most action verbs that continue for a medium amount of time (they can be interrupted but they are temporary)
- There is an importand difference between simple and continuous.
- “I’m reading four books this month.” = I’m in the middle of all four of them right now.
- “I read four books a month.” = I usually read four books per month (but not at the same time).
- - short actions = verbs like “stop” and “hit” that don’t continue long enough to be interrupted
- These are usually not used in the continuous, because continuous emphasizes that we’re in the middle of some action with duration.
- - non-action (stative) verbs = verbs like “want” and “belong” that don’t take any time
- Verbs with these meanings cannot be used in the continuous.
- ---
- Some stative verbs also have dynamic (action) meanings:
- I have eggs in my refrigerator. - non-action = possess
- I have eggs for breakfast every day. - action = eat (We can say, “I am having eggs for breakfast.”)
- I think English is interesting. - non-action = believe
- I think about English a lot. - action = consider
- p. 11 part 7 - Complete the sentences with simple present or present continuous. Decide which uses are actions and which are non-action.
- 1 a think - stative / non-action
- b are thinking - dynamic / action
- 2 a come - stative / non-action
- b are coming - dynamic / action
- 3 a love - stative / non-action
- b loves - stative / non-action (if this is her general opinion about Peru or about the vacation)
- is loving - dynamic / action (if she is really enjoying it right now - this use is informal)
- ---
- Grammar: question forms
- simple present - we need “do” or “does” to ask questions
- Does she love Peru? - we use the base form after “do” or “does” = we say “love” not “loves”
- Do you come from Spain?
- Where do they live?
- present continuous - we put the verb “be” before the subject
- Is she loving Peru? (remember this is an informal use of “love”)
- Are you enjoying class?
- Am I pronouncing that correctly?
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Questions with “can”:
- y/n Can you help me? / Can I help you?
- info- Where can I find…?
- Subject questions: questions where the question word is about the subject
- Who lives here? - “who” is the subject, so there’s no other word to put after “do” or “does”
- What is happening? / What’s going on?
- Which movies are playing?
- How many people study in this class?
- ---
- Greeting questions:
- “How” questions are asking about good/bad - How are you? How’s it going? How are things? How have you been? How are you doing? How do you do?
- (The typical answer is something like “not bad” or “pretty good” or “fine”.)
- “What” questions are asking about your activities - What’s up? What’s going on? What’s happening?
- (The typical answer is something like “not much” or “nothing much” or “not too much”.)
