58. The reincarnation of a soul travels through time beginning with the diary of a potential slave-owner voyaging across the Pacific in 1849, then a talented composer writing letters to his lover in the Britain's 1930s, followed by a reporter investigating a corrupt case about a US nuclear power-plant in the 1970s, succeeded by a publisher's comical entrapment in a nursing home in 2012, followed by a clone's thrilling escape and rebellion in 2144's Korea, and finally a tribesman fighting cannibals in Hawaii in a post-apocalyptic world past 2300. Each story challenges the corrupt norms of the time, changing the course of history, and shaping the future through acts of kindness, big and small.
 59. The reincarnation of a soul travels through time in an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story, a time-shifting weave of six interlinking narratives, with diverse settings from the savagery of a Pacific Island in the 1850s to a dystopian Korea of the near future. Based on the best-selling novel Cloud Atlas written by David Mitchell. Featuring an all-star cast led by Halle Berry and Tom Hanks.
 60. So many story lines are rolled together, It's a mixture of everything, love, humor, intrigue, and science fiction. The time line jump around a lot, it never stays on one storyline for the longest. It's a 3 hour film, but it is so well paced you'll forget how long it is. The creators of The Matrix Trillogy can bring such an intriguing epic to the big screen.

Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving and Jim Strugess all play several different characters through out the movie, and they all do it quite well, but in some parts the make up does not look that convincing, but the performances make up for that. I hope the acting won't be missed by the Oscars. The settings also become a character, as it takes from past, present, and future. One great film, not just the best film of 2012, but the best film all around.
 61. A grandiose production and stellar cast doesn't help this overly ambitious mix come together in a coherent movie. The series of different stories isn't set up well in the beginning so it feels confusing for a while. Then when they sort of come together it isn't clever or convincing. Maybe this story was unfilmable. It just felt like a mix of bad movies shredded and mixed up together. It tries to have a common theme about standing up to oppression of some sort or other via corporate corruption, musical composition, the slave trade, science fiction etc but in the end it wasn't worth the effort.

The white actors acting as Asian and vice versa are distractingly comical although I understand there is a reason for it.

It's easy to see why it wasn't a box office success and didn't receive any major nominations.

Skip it.
 62. The cast comes off like a third-rate stock company on the matinee after the night on which everyone got bombed on mescal (and possibly mescaline).
 63. Cloud Atlas is based on the 2004 multi-award winning novel by David Mitchell. It consists of six loosely interconnected stories: an 1850 diary of an ocean voyage across the Pacific; letters from a composer to his friend; a thriller about a murder at a nuclear power plant; a farce about a publisher in a nursing home; a rebellious clone in futuristic Korea; and the tale of a tribe living in post-apocalyptic Hawaii, far in the future. The author himself has indicated that the film will take the loose connections of the novel and expand them into the major theme of the film: "The reincarnation motif in the book is just a hinted-at linking device, but the script gives it centre stage to link the six worlds with characters, causes and effects." The film will also feature all the principal actors playing multiple roles of different ages, sexes and races. "A novel can't do multi-role acting: a film can," says Mitchell. "The directors are playing to the strengths of their medium, just like I try to." The novel was shortlisted for the 2004 Booker Prize, Nebula Award, Arthur C. Clarke Award, among many others. There are three pieces: (1) "Prelude: The Atlas March" by Tom Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek (from the film's soundtrack); (2) "Sonera" by Thomas Bergersen; and (3) "Outro" by M83. In chronological order:

"The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing" - Wachowskis

"Letters from Zedelghem" - Tykwer

"Half Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery" - Tykwer

"The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish" - Tykwer

"An Orison of Sonmi-451" - Wachowskis

"Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After" - Wachowskis a5c7b9f00b
