- The Asia Pacific is a fast-developing region and with that development comes demand, demand for commercial aircraft. Boeing itself predicts that the region will require 17,000 new planes before 2039. Of those approximately 1000 will be sub 80 seat turboprops, 8000 will be regional jets while the rest will be traditional medium and wide body’s. This represents a truly valuable market for established and new aircraft manufacturers alike.
- Competition is, however, fierce within each of the three markets and there are many established competitors, each with established products. Nevertheless, seeing this as an opportunity to further his goals of industrial self-sufficiency Prime Minister Mahathir has announced that the Malaysian government will be creating a joint venture company with DRB-HICOM’s subsidiary; DEFTECH. The aim of this partnership is simple: Expand Malaysia's sovereign aerospace capabilities by creating commercially viable products for the Malaysian and global markets.
- The joint venture, to be called Malaya aerospace (MA) will be split 51/49 with the government owning the controlling share. To aid in its establishment as an entity the Malaysian Government will provide $5 million in initial funding as well as a hanger at, and access to facilities at RMAF Gong Kedak. This initial funding will be matched by DRB-HICOM with an extra $500,000 being contributed by the state government of Terengganu.
- In an effort to provide Malaysian Aerospace with capital, as well as experience the Malaysian MOD has signed a development contract worth $9 million for a light cargo/passenger aircraft capable of carrying 3000kgs or 32 passengers,1100kms at a maximum height of 30,000 feet. The aircraft will have a rear opening cargo door, wide enough to fit a 463L master pallet which it will be able to carry two of.
- MA expects that this aircraft will encounter modest commercial success with military and civilian operators around the world due to its excellent potential as both a short-haul passenger aircraft and as a tactical, responsive light air lifter. Export opportunities will be numerous due to its use of a non-American turboprop; The Czech Walter M602B which MA will seek to buy the patent of so that it can undergo an unlimited production run in Malaysia.
- The initial prototype will be completed by 2021 with full-rate production to commence in 2022 when the RMAF, RMN, RMCG, and RMA expect to order around 35 aircraft. The aircraft, to be known as the MA Scops is expected to cost around $4.5 million per unit.
