  1. His skill showed that he was an old hand at the terrible
  2. game of man-hunting: so I determined to run no
  3. undue risk of losing him this time. I accordingly
  4. waited until he got quite close about twenty yards
  5. away and then fired my '303 at his chest. I heard
  6. the bullet strike him, but unfortunately it had no
  7. knock-down effect, for with a fierce growl he turned
  8. and made off with great long bounds. Before he
  9. disappeared from sight, however,I- managed to have
  10. three more shots at him from the magazine rifle, and
  11. another growl told me that the last of these had
  12. also taken effect.
  13. We awaited daylight with impatience, and at the
  14. first glimmer ofdawn we set out to hunt him clown. I
  15. took a native tracker with me, so that I was free to
  16. keep a good look-out, while Mahina followed imme-
  17. diately behind with a Martini carbine. Splashes of
  18. blood being plentiful, we were able to get along
  19. quickly;
  20. and we had not proceeded more than a
  21. quarter of a mile through the jungle when suddenly
  22. a fierce warning growl was heard right in front of
  23. us. Looking cautiously through the bushes,I could
  24. see the man-eater glaring out in our direction, and
  25. showing his tusks in an angry snarl. I at once took
  26. careful aim and fired. Instantly he sprang out and
  27. made a most determined charge clown on us. I
  28. fired again and knocked him over
  29. but in a second he was up once more and coming for me as fast as
  30. lie could in his crippled condition. A third shot
  31. had no apparent effect, so I put out my hand for the
  32. Martini, hoping to stop him with it. To mydismay,
  33. however, it was not there. The terror of the sud-
  34. den charge had proved too much for Mahina, and
  35. both he and the carbine were by this time well on their
  36. way up a tree. In the circumstances there was
  37. nothing to do but follow suit, which I did without
  38. loss of time: and but for the fact that one of my shots
  39. had broken a hind leg, the brute would most certainly
  40. have had me.
