With raging anger, Lancelot lunged forward to strike the other knight a powerful blow that caught him squarely on his engraved helmet and cut straight through to his coifs. If he had not been wearing three coifs made of pure steel, his helmet alone would not have been enough to save him. As it was, Lancelot cut two of them in half, leaving intact only the third (which was not the worst of the three since it was made of steel welded with gold). But for this coif, which actually had the least amount of steel in it, Lancelot's mighty blow would have cut right through to his spine.

When the gigantic knight realized that his opponent was hacking his armor to pieces, he backed a little way off and begged him to tell him who he was.
