  1. [14:47:51] %ClaireC: ok hi
  2. [14:48:11] %ClaireC: so over the next few weeks, we're running a theme creation contest (you probably already know about that)
  3. [14:48:29] %ClaireC: !roomevents
  4. [14:48:29] [removed due to formatting issues]
  5. [14:48:47] %ClaireC: so to get us started I'm gonna be running a quick explanation for how to make a good OS
  6. [14:49:36] %ClaireC: first things first, you need a general idea of what you want to do
  7. [14:49:54] %ClaireC: this might sound obvious, but you shouldn't just throw in a bunch of random roles in and call it a day
  8. [14:50:30] %ClaireC: so for example, Classic tries to show people simple roles, and dethy tries to show people cop sanities
  9. [14:50:42] %ClaireC: for today, I'm going to be making a quick theme based around an underused role
  10. [14:50:49] %ClaireC: !mafia dt cpr doctor
  11. [14:50:49] CPR Doctor: During the Night, you may PM the host the name of another player. This player will be protected from all nightkills for that Night. If they would not be nightkilled, you kill them instead.
  12. [14:51:41] %ClaireC: when you're making a theme, the main factors to consider are enjoyability and balance
  13. [14:52:01] %ClaireC: nobody wants to play a boring theme, but nobody wants to play a very unbalanced theme either
  14. [14:52:19] *Universal Backup: Nobody could be automatically hosted - host a user manually and the queue will continue
  15. [14:52:24] %ClaireC: thank you UB
  16. [14:52:36] %ClaireC: most themes have around 1/4 scum, 1/4 town power roles, and 1/2 vanilla town, but that's only a rough guideline and every theme's different
  17. [14:53:05] %ClaireC: like I said earlier, don't throw in roles at random, try and pick roles that work together
  18. [14:53:40] %ClaireC: working with the CPR Doctor from earlier, I might pick a vigilante and a standard doctor to go with it, as they all interact with kills
  19. [14:54:08] %ClaireC: e.g. a 9 player setup could have 2 mafia goons, a CPR doctor, a vigilante, a doctor, and 4 vanilla townies
  20. [14:54:29] %ClaireC: something to look out for when balancing a theme is a "breaking strategy"
  21. [14:55:01] %ClaireC: these are situations where the best strategy for a player is to follow a specific set of instructions every game
  22. [14:55:40] %ClaireC: the most notable of these is follow the cop in themes with both a cop and a doctor, where the cop claims d1 and is free to state their inspects with no fear of being killed
  23. [14:56:10] %ClaireC: to counter this, you can put a role in your theme that stops this strategy, for example give mafia a roleblocker, or make the cop macho like in classic7
  24. [14:56:31] %ClaireC: another major breaking strategy is "massclaiming"
  25. [14:57:09] %ClaireC: themes with too many named roles are often broken by every player claiming a role, which can massively narrow down the possible suspects
  26. [14:58:07] %ClaireC: multiball setups - themes with multiple scum factions are often very hard to balance, as one small change to them can cause a snowball effect in the game
  27. [14:58:54] %ClaireC: usually the two scum factions would separately be weaker than just one on its own but more powerful combined (e.g. 2v2v9 instead of 3v10)
  28. [14:59:41] %ClaireC: I think that's about everything important to cover - pm me any questions you have and I'll answer them now
  29. [15:00:14] %ClaireC: [20:00:00] PassTheSaltDude: I think its also a big deal that you shouldn't make an OS based around one unique role you like and make that role the saving grace of one faction. Because having a faction rely on one role is not fun
  30. [15:00:14] %ClaireC: [20:00:06] PassTheSaltDude: and it ruins the experience
  31. [15:00:37] %ClaireC: this is a good point to consider - if you focus too hard on one role, the game can often be ruined if it dies
  32. [15:00:57] %ClaireC: [20:00:26] AlZev∞2002: what if the gamemode is unoriginal
  33. [15:02:15] %ClaireC: something that will help when designing a theme is to check mafiascum, and !mafia themepl to look at various other themes to make sure yours isn't too similar to one that already exists
  34. [15:02:52] %ClaireC: however, variants of existing themes can work if done right (e.g. newd3 being a variant of 2d3)
  35. [15:03:01] %ClaireC: [20:01:54] sporeisgayaf69: can a gamemode depend on 2 roles for example wtcher and tracker? in eyes
  36. [15:03:46] User lucidjolteon has been added to the host queue by Schiavetto.
  37. [15:04:05] %ClaireC: so eyes has 2 PRs in a 7p setup, which is about the maximum you can have, but they work well together as they have similar effects (like with the CPR doc OS I made earlier)
  38. [15:04:39] %ClaireC: any last questions?
  39. [15:05:02] %ClaireC: [20:04:51] orngdz: how do you avoid a theme being massclaimable
  40. [15:05:40] %ClaireC: the main way to do this is to not have too many power roles
  41. [15:06:46] %ClaireC: for example "Mafia Goon, Mafia Goon, Cop, Doctor, Miller, Vanilla Townie" would probably be broken by massclaiming, as there are lot of named roles
  42. [15:07:18] %ClaireC: however, one or two well chosen power roles can increase the enjoyability of a theme
  43. [15:07:26] %ClaireC: so you've got to find a balance somewhere in between
  44. [15:07:33] %ClaireC: [20:06:12] Deth∞Wing: how do you make a theme that was more not town than town balanced?
  45. [15:09:11] %ClaireC: Usually, you want to make themes as balanced as you can - there's an argument that can be made that themes should be slightly scum sided as town will often play better than the numbers would suggest
  46. [15:09:12] %ClaireC: but in general you should just try and make it as balanced as you can, then tweak after testing if necessary
  47. [15:09:39] %ClaireC: ok last question
  48. [15:09:47] %ClaireC: [20:09:42] LucidJolteon: do the themes have to be made during the time limit or can we start them now
  49. [15:10:38] %ClaireC: as far as i know, you can submit themes made whenever (Schiavetto correct me if I'm wrong)
  50. [15:11:00] %ClaireC: [20:06:24] clc ironic: hi can we start fishul thank you
  51. [15:11:02] %ClaireC: yes
  52. [15:11:31] %ClaireC: (as soon as schia turns modchat back down)
  53. [15:11:44] %ClaireC: (or we just do a staff only fish)
  54. [15:12:06] #Schiavetto: (Claire is correct - you can submit themes from whenever, just bear in mind that they need to be playtested within the judging period)
