- And I knew he was close. I could feel him. I’d been hunted before. I knew that sudden lack of noise. The silence of held breath and tensed muscle. He was up ahead, along one of those pathways. I was certain of it. I didn’t want him to know I’d sensed him, so I kept up the oblivious act and strode confidently into the intersection.
- That’s when I made him.
- He was along the right-hand pathway. Again, I can’t tell you exactly how I knew. But I knew. I spun and lunged, stabbing my hammer into the darkened space in which he was hiding. He was there all right.
- But my hammer didn’t connect.
