9. OCTOBER 19, 1972: THE PRESIDENT AND HALDEMAN, 1:48-4:09 P.M.,
10. EXECUTIVE OFFICE BUILDING
11.
12. Haldeman informs the President that Mark Felt, Number Two in the FBI hierarcy, is the source of leaks. Haldeman refuses to tell the President the source of his information.
13.
14. NIXON
15. What's the conveyor belt for Felt?
16.
17. HALDEMAN
18. The Post.
19.
20. NIXON
21. How did we stumble on (unintelligible)?
22.
23. HALDEMAN
24. Through an official in a publication who knows where a reporter in the publication is getting his stuff. In other words, we learned it from the reporter.
25.
26. NIXON
27. Why is he telling us?
28.
29. HALDEMAN
30. Because he has stronger ties here than he does to the publication.
31.
32. NIXON
33. [Time correspondent Jerrold L.] Schecter?
34.
35. HALDEMAN
36. No. It's a legal guy.
37.
38. NIXON
39. The Post?
40.
41. HALDEMAN
42. A legal guy.
43.
44. NIXON
45. Great.
46.
47. HALDEMAN
48. And actually, I believe he's a former Justice Department man or a former FBI man.
49.
50. NIXON
51. Who made the contact?
52.
53. HALDEMAN
54. He made the contact here, with a guy at the Justice Department.
55.
56. NIXON
57. Why did he do it?
58.
59. HALDEMAN
60. Because he knows what the problem is. He is deeply concerned about it. He is a former FBI man. He knows that the FBI is leaking to a reporter in his publication...So he has told the guy at Justice, who he knows, what the route is. He said, "I think you ought to know this; I don't know what you can do about it." The guy at Justice told John Dean. He has not told anybody else, including Kleindienst or Pat Gray, because he's afraid that either of them might react in such a way as we do more harm than good.
61.
62. NIXON
63. So say nothing, say nothing.
