- The rhythmical clicking of the nippers. The grinding sound of the file. The rustling of sandpaper. The sharp, slightly nauseating smell of plastic cement. A bystander wouldn't understand why, but right now, Mebuki was experiencing a state of blissful relaxation. In front of her was her latest purchase, a limited edition of the Jurakudai with the roofing tiles plated in a golden colour. It was an atypical choice for Mebuki, who usually leaned towards buying more regular castles, but the Jurakudai had defensive buildings as well, so it qualified as a mix between a castle and a palace. Most of all, Mebuki simply couldn't resist the undergated golden plating on the tiles. To achieve a result like that on bare plastic she'd need to put in a lot of effort and buy expensive lacquer...
- Mebuki's thoughts were interrupted by a series of soft, but rapid knocks on the door. She was so well-acquainted with that sound, she didn't even need to hear the voice of the person knocking on the door to recognise her.
- "What is it, Suzume?" - said Mebuki while filing the nub off another part she just cut off the runner.
- The door opened and a head of brown hair peeked in.
- "Hi, Mebu! How are you doing? Do you mind if I come in to hang out a bit?"
- "Suzume, you can see that I'm busy right now."
- The bed creaked as Suzume sat down.
- "Ooh, building another castle? Mebu, you really do love these."
- "The Jurakudai is not a castle. It's a palace. Of course, it does have a set of defensive fortifications and a moat, which might confuse a layman into thinking it's a castle, but it was built for the purpose of... This isn't the point, weren't you listening when I said I was busy?" - Mebuki turned to Suzume and raised her voice, snipping the nippers in her hand a few times.
- "I-I'm sorry, Mebuu~! But I just wanted to come chat for a bit...Heehee."
- "What was that laugh for?"
- "It's just, you know, you look really happy when you're talking about these things. And you look really peaceful when you're building them, too. Seeing you like that makes me happy in return, Mebu."
- "W-What is that supposed to mean?"
- "Nothing~. So, can we chit-chat for a bit while you're working on your castle?"
- "Pa-la-ce! And no. Suzume, you do know making scale models is something that requires a lot of concentration, right?"
- "Aww... Can we talk about castles then?"
- "Huh? I didn't know you had an interest in them, Suzume. I suppose I don't mind."
- "I don't know much about them, really. But since it's something you like, I want to know more about them, so you can find it fun to talk about them to me, ehehe. So, Mebu, is there some castle you love the most?"
- "My favourite castle, huh?"
- Mebuki was caught slightly off-guard by the question. She put the nippers down on the table and turned her chair to face Suzume.
- "Since you're a Kagawa girl, something like Takamatsu-jou? Or, uh, what was it, Marugame-jou? Or maybe the pride of Ehime, Matsuyama-jou caught your eye? I don't really know many others, though..."
- Suzume was throwing out suggestions based on what meagre amount of castles she knew.
- Mebuki shook her head.
- "No, it isn't either of those. I don't think you know the one I'm thinking of."
- "Oh, so there is one? Come on, give me a hint! Maybe I'll guess it and you'll be proud of me!"
- Mebuki faintly smiled.
- "Do your best, then. It starts with "ka"."
- "Ka? Hmm... Kagawa-jou! No, that's too simple, and probably doesn't exist either! Aaagh, I don't know! I'm sorry, Mebuuu~! I don't know!"
- "I'll tell you about it, then. It's, honestly, a pretty unassuming castle. If you looked at it, you'd think it would be an easy mark for a siege right away."
- "Mebu, I don't want to be rude, but that sounds a bit lame."
- "But you know, Suzume. That castle has stalwartly defended against every single attack it's been under. Under those plain-looking fortifications lied immense inner strength. It always protected the people in its walls without fail."
- "That sounds so cool... So, Mebu, what's the name!? Come on, I'm really curious now!"
- "The castle I love the most..."
- Mebuki looked away, scratched the back of her head and said with a slightly bashful smile.
- "...is named Kagajou" {the last kanji in the Kagajou surname is the kanji for "castle"}
- "...Eh...M-Mebu...You mean..."
- The usually talkative Suzume became mute and pointed her eyes downwards at the floor. Her face burned up. Her ears were on fire. A few minutes passed in awkward silence.
- "I-I-I-I...got it. Yeah. Got it, totally. I'm, I'm not going to bother you for today anymore, so you can, uh, get back to modelling, Mebu... I'll lock the door so nobody else bothers you, too."
- Suzume stood up, went to the door and locked it from the inside. Then she sat down on the bed again.
- Suzume shyly looked at Mebuki.
- "Mebu... Is it okay if I stay here and watch?"
- Mebuki closed her eyes and nodded.
- The girls were alone in the room. Mebuki, sitting at her table and building the lavish Jurakudai, and Suzume, sitting on the bed, watching over her.
- Suzume didn't stay true to her words. After some time has passed, she began calling out to Mebuki and asking questions. But she tried to be considerate enough to keep them related to Mebuki's model-building. As far as she could, of course. A bit later Suzume took the second chair in the room and sat down next to Mebuki.
- The rhythmical clicking of the nippers. The grinding sound of the file. The rustling of sandpaper. The sharp, slightly nauseating smell of plastic cement. The sounds of Suzume's breathing and fidgeting. Mebuki was feeling happiness. And this time, even a bystander could understand why.
