Based on the real-life events of Ian Fleming&#39;s 30 Commando during World War II this is a story which takes our heroes from the edge of defeat on the beaches of Dunkirk to the mountains of Norway on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines that, if successful, could change the course of the war.
In 1940, Major Jones is assigned to assemble an 8-men commando team to travel to Norway with specialist Roger Rollright to meet the agent Beowulf and destroy the German Freyo Station and steal German state-of-the-art technology of Radio Direction Finding (RDF) in Operation Grendel. Jones travels to the Dashwood Military Prison to bring the soldier Brightling and he brings also the insubordinate Corporal Bob Rains; then the commando team heads to Scotland to be trained. When they fly to Norway, they are discovered and the plane crashes. Six members of the military unit and the specialist survive to the attack. After the assignment, the naval pickup is not possible and the survivors without supply and little ammunition need to walk to Sweden in a dangerous journey through a land occupied by German forces.
It&#39;s May 1940 France. Corporal Rains (Danny Dyer) gets his men to Dunkirk for the evacuation. He&#39;s thrown in prison for striking an officer and cowardice. He breaks out taking Maj. Jack Jones (Sean Bean) hostage. Jones is impressed just enough to allow him to join the 30 Commando unit which was formed with the help of Lt. Cdr. Ian Fleming. They are sent to gather intelligence on German radar by launching a raid in Norway. Jensen (Izabella Miko) is their local contact.<br/><br/>This has so much potential. It&#39;s Ian Fleming and his commandos. It sounds cool just on its own. There are a few ways to go with this. This is not a particularly good way. It&#39;s not a Bond-like action movie. It&#39;s also not a gritty realistic war movie. This is more of a faltering old style war movie. It&#39;s really annoying when the Nazis are standing out in the open to call out the British commando unit. It&#39;s as if they&#39;re banking on them being really bad shots. I&#39;m also not impressed with the character Rains. His brashness can sometimes come off as a little whiny. His escape from is a scene with great possibilities. Jones should have jumped on that and take him in right away. Instead it&#39;s a lot of to-and-fro. While watching it, I kept thinking this could have been something great.
This is a rather small scale intimate WWII drama about a Commando unit going to Norway to steal some radar technology from a German base there. There are gunfights but not huge battle scenes. Those expecting some super clever espionage because of Ian Fleming will be disappointed. It is a cover mission but it&#39;s not a spy yarn.<br/><br/>A little too much time was spent on the commandos training which was tedious. More at the end about how the mission helped the war would have been better.<br/><br/>They show Nazi atrocities towards the Norwegians. Not everyone remembers that Norway suffered during WWII.<br/><br/>Not too many famous actors here except Sean Bean. Overall while not a must see it&#39;s an okay watch far war buffs.
