  1. Number of watches is indicated in parentheses before the title.
  2.
  3. ------------------
  4. SERIES (completed)
  5. ------------------
  6. (4) Madoka Magica: 9.6/10
  7. - Love everything about this anime. It's only 12 episodes, but it has incredible rewatch value (one rewatch is basically mandatory for full appreciation). Much like the Monogatari series, every detail of every scene seems to have a purpose. But unlike Monogatari, you don't need to pay close attention to enjoy the show. Some call Madoka a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, but it's so much more than that. I've never seen a plot so brilliantly crafted, and the characters develop in interesting ways you wouldn't expect. The unique art style is amazing once you get used to it. I recommend watching this as blind as possible. The dub is excellent.
  8.
  9. (1) Made in Abyss: 9.5/10
  10. - Wow. This was magnificent. The world building, the characters, the sense of adventure, the harsh realities of life, the emotions -- these fundamental elements of storytelling were all executed brilliantly. Perhaps most impressive was the show's ability to balance fun, cute moments with dark, extremely disturbing ones. Sometimes the show would transition between the two in a matter of seconds, and it somehow felt natural. This is an adaptation of an ongoing manga, so I'm anxiously awaiting a second season.
  11.
  12. (1) Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo: 9/10
  13. - I don't like this type of anime that much, but the characters are incredibly likable and relatable. Some people have criticized it for being too dramatic/cheesy, but I think it's realistic for a high school setting.
  14.
  15. (2) Death Note: 8.8/10
  16. - This is the first anime I watched and was recommended, and it mostly met my high expectations. The premise is fascinating and thought-provoking, and the two main characters are fantastic. In my first watch I was disappointed by the lack of strong female characters, but in my rewatch it didn't bother me as much.
  17.
  18. (1) Psycho-Pass: 8.5/10 (watched first season)
  19. - Extremely interesting premise backed up by a solid cast, especially the main character. This anime had me hooked from the start. The plot was a bit generic and most action scenes lacked tension, but everything else was fascinating. I thought the show handled its central themes -- morality, authority, free will -- in a mature and complex manner, despite many opportunities for cliches.
  20.
  21. (1) Steins;Gate: 8.5/10
  22. - I strongly recommend playing the visual novel first if you have the time and money. The scenes with the most impact are done much better, and with greater attention to detail. Of course, some people prefer less of a time commitment (VN is 30-40 hours) or don't enjoy reading, and thankfully the S;G anime is still a solid work of its own. Both the game and the anime have a slow start, but the characters are likable and the payoff is worth it.
  23.
  24. (1) Domestic na Kanojo: 8.5/10
  25. - Many people call this a guilty pleasure or soap opera anime. I can see this, but for me it was mostly refreshing in its approach toward adult topics. Although this anime covers only a fraction of the manga (which I plan to read), it's a pretty complete portrait of the uncontrollable nature of romantic feelings. The characters are all extremely flawed in realistic ways, but still likable enough (especially Rui). The show also never took itself too seriously -- I found myself laughing more than anything. I don't understand why it's gotten such low ratings. But it's probably best to watch this with low expectations given the subject matter.
  26.
  27. (1) The Promised Neverland: 8.3/10
  28. Very high quality anime, although I've heard it's a bit of a rushed adaptation of the manga. It's similar to Made in Abyss in terms of the world building, plot twists and characters. I don't really like that the main characters are all super geniuses (anime has enough of those, IMO), as it allows them to get out of situations in ways that would normally be unrealistic.
  29.
  30. (1) Black Lagoon: 8.2/10
  31. The action is over the top and the plot lines are weak, but the characters make up for it with an unusual combination of maturity and fun. The main female character is particularly well done, as she's incredibly likable despite being a simple-minded scoundrel.
  32.
  33. (1) Nagi no Asukara: 8.1/10
  34. - Really good pacing -- this is perhaps the only anime that I've seen effectively use a full season's length. The characters and love polygons seem a bit superficial at first, and at times I wondered whether this was just an anime for teenage romantics, but the second half reveals a larger purpose. There are multiple main characters, and they all develop in realistic and meaningful ways, so it's not a big deal if one character bothers you (see: Re:Zero). Great visuals and soundtrack.
  35.
  36. (1) No Game No Life: 8.1/10
  37. - This is sort of a guilty pleasure anime, as there's a lot of ecchi and silliness without any greater meaning. But the characters are great and the games are fun. A few episodes really stood out.
  38.
  39. (1) Hyouka: 8/10
  40. - Similar to Sakurasou in that the characters are consistently amazing and the plot doesn't need to develop much for the experience to be enjoyable. But I found the mystery-solving aspect to be lacking at times, and the ending was disappointing.
  41.
  42. (1) Shinsekai Yori: 8/10
  43. - Need to watch this again. This is a deep anime with a well-crafted plot, but the execution seemed lacking at times.
  44.
  45. (1) Date A Live: 7.9/10
  46. - This anime has an odd mix of strong characters, weak characters, serious plot twists and humor. It also features some of the best character designs I've seen. Unfortunately, it's a silly and predictable harem at its core. Each girl gets her own arc, and you're left wanting more from them while the show introduces more and more girls -- too many in the end.
  47.
  48. (1) Code Geass: 7.5/10
  49. - This would be nearly a full point higher if not for the second season, which I found to be confusing, unrealistic and insulting to the viewer's intelligence. Season 1 featured lots of fun action and plot twists, plus a decent amount of character development. If you reach a point in this anime where you feel like it's going downhill, I'd recommend stopping. Many say the ending is worth it, but I disagree.
  50.
  51. (1) Toradora: 7.5/10
  52. - Similar to Sakurasou, this anime needs its characters to be likable. And they are. Unfortunately, they weren't quite good enough to make up for some subpar execution throughout the show. The harem aspect was mostly weak and unnecessary -- like many animes, I end up wondering what made the main character so much more desirable than everyone else. And the plot points were too convenient and uninteresting. I think a second watch would help me appreciate this show more, but it's not incredibly deep.
  53.
  54. (1) Sword Art Online: 7.4/10 (watched first season)
  55. - This anime is apparently very polarizing. I think it's best enjoyed without a critical eye, as you can easily find flaws if you look for them, but you'll find a lot of delicious eye candy if you don't. Nothing is particularly deep and the premise's potential is mostly wasted, but SAO is easy to watch and will probably have you rooting for the protagonists throughout. The second arc is much worse than the first, particularly the final two episodes.
  56.
  57. (1) Danganronpa 3: 7.4/10
  58. - This was really good other than the ending. Obviously, play the games (Danganronpa 1 and 2) before watching this.
  59.
  60. (1) Zankyou no Terror: 7.1/10
  61. - I loved the premise and characters, and the soundtrack and visuals had perhaps the best quality I've seen, but the story was far too unrealistic and not nearly as interesting as it could have been. This seemed very rushed as well -- what should have been 20+ episodes was packed into 11, several of which focused on a bland, unnecessary antagonist that killed any momentum the show had from its intriguing beginning. So much wasted potential.
  62.
  63. (1) Angel Beats: 7/10
  64. - Would be lower if not for top-notch soundtrack and visuals. The premise and characters draw you in quickly, but the show doesn't do much with them, and the ending was rushed.
  65.
  66. (1) Re:Zero: 6.9/10
  67. - This anime would have been a lot better if the main character wasn't so insufferable. It's possible to make a MC unlikable at first, then flip your opinion through quality character development and plot (see: Steins;Gate), but this missed the mark. By extension, it bothered me that other characters' development was often closely tied to the MC. However, this show has a great premise and a lot of entertaining scenes.
  68.
  69. (1) Danganronpa 1: 4/10
  70. - Just play the game. This is a cheap and rushed adaptation.
  71.
  72. ------------------
  73. CURRENTLY WATCHING
  74. ------------------
  75. Monogatari series (watched Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari and first movie)
  76. - I like the premise. I'm not sure I appreciate everything about the execution, but that's partly because a dialogue-driven show and subtitles don't mix well. It seems that a lot of wordplay is lost in translation. I'm looking forward to seeing more from the characters.
  77.
  78. Samurai Champloo (13/26 watched)
  79. - This is OK, but a bit lighthearted for my tastes.
  80.
  81. Kill la Kill (12/24 watched)
  82. - Mixed feelings about this so far. I love the satire and silliness -- some of the action scenes are laughably over the top -- and the fanservice has a purpose. But the dialogue and plot points are a bit repetitive, and I don't find myself emotionally invested in the characters. I also dislike this art style for some reason. I'll probably finish watching... someday.
  83.
  84. Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (6/13 watched)
  85. - To me, this looks like a better version of the Monogatari series. It's hard to explain why, but I'm definitely interested in watching the rest quickly.
  86.
  87. Gurren Lagann (5/24 watched)
  88. - I don't like mecha anime or this art style, and the main female character just seems like fanservice. So while the plot was somewhat interesting, I probably won't continue this unless someone gives a quality recommendation.
  89.
  90. Serial Experiments Lain (3/12 watched)
  91. - Don't really understand what's happening at this point, but I realize this anime is weird and will take some processing. I might keep going just to hear the OP nine more times. :D
  92.
  93. A Place Further Than The Universe (3/13 watched)
  94. - I'm just not the target audience for this type of anime. It's clearly trying to be cute and uplifting, and I want a dark story with tension and conflict.
  95.
  96. Attack on Titan (2 episodes watched)
  97. - The main character bothers me, but otherwise this seems good. Not sure if/when I'll continue.
  98.
  99. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2 episodes watched)
  100. - Too early to judge one way or the other.
  101.
  102. ------------------
  103. MOVIES
  104. ------------------
  105. (2) Spirited Away: 8.5/10
  106. - I first watched this when I was like 12 and finally got around to rewatching it. Chihiro is so refreshing and unique, and the world building in the first half is amazing. I found the second half to a bit underwhelming, but that's to be expected given the younger target audience.
  107.
  108. (3) Madoka Magica: Rebellion: 8.2/10
  109. - I actually didn't enjoy this on the first watch, as the main plot was underwhelming and the ending didn't make sense. But after rewatching the show and the movie several times, I think the ending is basically perfect (aside from the fact that it's a cliffhanger, and the next movie still hasn't been announced). Outstanding soundtrack and visuals, although some of it could be interpreted as fanservice.
  110.
  111. (1) A Silent Voice: 6.6/10
  112. - Props to this movie for tackling a difficult topic in a mature manner, but it fell short in some basic elements of storytelling. Character motivations were left to the viewer's imagination rather than fleshed out, which made emotional investment a challenge. The main characters in particular should have had more depth, and a few of the side characters should have been removed or reduced to lesser roles.
  113.
  114. (1) Steins;Gate: Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu: 6.6/10
  115. - Fanservice the movie. Thankfully Kurisu is such a likable character that it's tolerable.
  116.
  117. (1) Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars: 6/10
  118. - The visuals just seem too outdated for a space drama. Perhaps I've been spoiled by seeing the best sci-fi movies. I found it difficult to follow the action during the battle scenes. I've heard the series is better, but it's quite long, and this movie didn't sell it to me.
  119.
  120. (1) No Game No Life: Zero: 5/10
  121. - This failed to capture the lightheartedness that made the series so good. And the plot wasn't very coherent or meaningful. Great visuals, though.
  122.
  123. ------------------
  124. MISCELLANEOUS
  125. ------------------
  126. Pokemon: ??/10
  127. - I don't really consider this an anime, as Pokemon is a game series for me, but the first season was great, and I've rewatched many of its episodes.
  128.
  129. Yu-Gi-Oh!: ??/10
  130. - I've only watched the dub, which is actually a joke (and entertaining in its own right). Again, Yu-Gi-Oh! is more of a game series/TCG for me.
