Somber #8

[19:11:35]	Somber	Now free of the Ghost Wood, the four find themselves near a large cluster of large, reinforced buildings. They seemed surrounded by long dead brush and olive groves that have been planted in a band of sticker brush. The ghost wood passed right to the north of it by a few hundred yards.
[19:15:03]	Night_Wind	gazes at the buildings surrounded by the remains of olive trees then gives herself a shake. "Well, I suppose that would be Olives. Shall we go say hello and find out what favors they will extract from us?"
[19:15:04]	Shimmershy	bites her lower lip, pointing off towards the buildings. "W-we should keep moving. I d-don't want to be out here when it gets dark..."
[19:16:18]	Edna_Stonetalon	sighs "They need a new decorator. Fumbles think you can keep caring our friend?"
[19:18:29]	Somber	There were a half dozen buildings or so that had been clearly patched and reinforced from damage, while many more had been allowed to crumble and decay. As they made their way west, the mare sniffed and whimpered, begging to be released. As they get close, they spot a large metal gate in the briar fense runing around the building. "Olive Grove School of
[19:19:25]	Agriculture" was written on a rusted, pitting plaque besides the wrought iron gate. A pony in a guard tower beside the gate watched their approach with clear caution.
[19:20:37]	Edna_Stonetalon	"That's a good sigh we haven't been shot at yet"
[19:21:07]	Night_Wind	nods to Eddie and smiles as she continues to levitate the mare. It is to that pony then she asks, "What exactly is your name anyway? It would be good to know who exactly we have on suicide watch."
[19:21:08]	Shimmershy	approaches, waving a forehoof at the guard on the tower. "Hello! Um. I don't suppose you'd be willing to open your doors for some friendly ponies traveling and trading, would you..? We were hoping to get a chance to talk to the locals as well."
[19:21:35]	Somber	A shot rang out, pitting the ground in front of Edna. "That's close enough. Olives doesn't need any scavengers, thanks." The guard shouts out.
[19:22:02]	Edna_Stonetalon	jumps "Shouldn't of said anything"
[19:24:12]	Somber	Then he gets a closer look and leans out, looking down at Shimmershy. "Woah... uh... yeah! Sure... um... yeah! Opening up!"
[19:26:10]	There was a grinding squeel and the gate opened up a few feet. The stallion, a teenaged red earth pony, straightened his security barding. "Um. Welcome to Olives. No begging. No salvaging. No requests to assist. No bothering the faculty. No free food or charity." He said as he gave an awkward smile to Shimmer. "Uh... um... what can I do for you?"
[19:28:52]	Shimmershy	squeaks a little at the gunshot, then breathes a sigh of relief as the guard looks out again. She smiled as the doors were opened and she approached them slowly. "Oh... Well I'm not sure if you can with those restrictions." She sighed quitely and lowered her head a little. "One of my friends has been poisoned. And we were very much hoping someponies here with their knowledge
[19:28:53]	might be able to help. Not that we'd ask them to do so for no reason, naturally. I've heard some of the ponies who had originally dealt with Sweet Tea fled here, so I thought I might offer them a chance to find a way to remind her she's not beyond the reach of anyone."
[19:30:49]	Somber	"Right... right..." he frowned and looked at Wander, who grimaced and held his stomach. "Um... okay. Yeah..." He rubbed his chin. "That sounds distinctly like bothering the faculty. And they hate to be bothered. Like... throwing me out on my tail hate. Um..." His eyes went to Shimmer and away again, then to Wander and away again. "Shoot. Maybe...
[19:31:25]	maybe... um... Dr. Tang might be okay. She's not as strict as the others..."
[19:32:12]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Did we mention we got a sample of the temp cure of that poison?"
[19:34:01]	Shimmershy	nods her head. "Indeed, we've got a sample of something which we think will hold the poison off, temporarily. And there's a great many unicorns out there who would be in Olives' debt for the help, as well." She trotted past the guard and took a moment to look around inside. "I don't want to get you in trouble, though... Maybe I should go speak to them myself..?"
[19:34:33]	Somber	"Uh... well... that only matters to the faculty and they... well... okay. I'll take you to see Dr. Tangerine. She's probably the nicest of them all." He said as he turned and nervously started for the large main building. "I really hope I don't get fired..." he fretted as he pulled out five plastic tags on lanyards and passed them out. Ancient 'visitor'
[19:34:48]	passes. "Don't take those off or... um... just don't take them off."
[19:35:13]	Edna_Stonetalon	takes them and hands them out to the others
[19:35:23]	Night_Wind	trots up behind Shimmer, carrying the unhappy pony with her. "Not to be a bother, but would you know someone who deals with ponies who wish to commit suicide. Barring that, do you have some rope so we can make sure she doesn't run away until we can help her come to terms with life here. Good ponies shouldn't let other good ponies die."
[19:35:27]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Automated security?"
[19:37:27]	Somber	"Here?" He looked at the desolate mare. "Oh no no no. She can't stay here. No scavengers are allowed. They'll just throw her out. No no no. The faculty doesn't have the time or food for charity. No no no..." he shakes his head and then looked at Edna and nodded. "Something like that." He trotted towards the main building and... yes... there were
[19:37:33]	Shimmershy	blinks and looks down at the tag, carefully taking it in a forehoof and looping it over her neck, then followed after the guard. "Thanks... I hope you don't get in any trouble on my count. What does the faculty actually do here..? I wouldn't think there'd be much teaching to go on..."
[19:38:21]	Somber	turrets. And protectaponies slowly trotting around on long patrols. "The faculty are in charge of Olives. They're trying to do research to cure the phage. And... um... other stuff..."
[19:38:40]	Edna_Stonetalon	cringes "I hate robots. Fumbles make sure our friend don't take her tag off"
[19:39:28]	raises an eyebrow at 'other stuff' "Really hope we didn't just walk into mad scientist territory"
[19:39:58]	Somber	The stallion points a hoof at Edna. "They're NOT mad. They're just... irritable."
[19:40:14]	Shimmershy	bites her lower lip, nodding to the security stallion. "Oh... W-well at least they have noble goals, right?"
[19:40:56]	Edna_Stonetalon	rolls her eyes and sticks her tongue out at him "Whatever you say minion"
[19:41:09]	Night_Wind	sighs and carefully double-wraps the lanyard around the suicidal mare's neck to make it harder for her to remove. "Really, it would be nice if you gave us your name," she murmurs to the miserable mare.
[19:42:54]	Somber	"Very noble." He nods. "And they're very smart and touchy." The mare didn't answer, once more begging to be returned to the ghost wood to be allowed to die with the other ponies. The stallion looked at her. "Oh. Another one of those..." he said with a little sympathetic look. "You might as well. Once a pony gets hit by ghost phage... well... there's

[19:44:19]	Edna_Stonetalon	"So it dose do something to them. I'm almost willing to bet a good deal of those 'ghost' aren't from the war"
[19:45:37]	Shimmershy	frowns at that, looking downwards sadly. "Does it really make them suffer that badly..? That they'd really want to stay there to die..?" She sighed quietly and shook her head, scuffing a forehoof.
[19:45:39]	Night_Wind	sighs. "Maybe we can take her back to Headless later. That cure of there's was able to get Rowan semi-functional after she was affected by the Mad Wood."
[19:46:22]	Somber	"Well it messes with your head something fierce. Not like the mad wood... that place just makes you go nutters. But ponies that get ghost phage in them... they keep thinking about times before the war. Some folks think they're from that time and somehow all of this is a nightmare. Others just want to get back to those good times. Some think they can use
[19:47:05]	Edna_Stonetalon	hears a few verses of that 'infernal song' in her head at the mention of the 'Mad Wood'
[19:47:12]	Somber	the ghost wood to time travel back before the war and stuff. I had an aunt who swore she was Pinkie Pie's sex slave after getting stuck in the ghost wood. Queerest thing ever. Can't explain it."
[19:49:18]	Shimmershy	rubs a forehoof against her other foreleg. "W-well maybe we can do something to help at some point." She sighs quietly and smiles to the guard. "S-so where do we meet this Doctor?"
[19:51:38]	Edna_Stonetalon	"You guys know there is a crazy old mare in Headless who can cure some of the crazy ya get from the phage right?"
[19:52:03]	Somber	"Right! This way!" He lead her inside. Most of the building wasn't in much better shape. There were sleeping areas and a cafeteria and even a small trading store, but by and large the building was largely unused. He trotted to an elevator and got in. "Labs are all down stairs." And down they went, a small way. "Oh, really? I didn't know that. Those
[19:53:19]	Solace ponies claim the same. And there's an old zebra witch doctor in bay leaf who's say to be able to help." When the doors opened a few minutes later, they entered a hall that was clean and intact. "Let's see. Hydroponics is... um... this way." He said as he trotted to the left.
[19:54:22]	Edna_Stonetalon	"We saw the effects. She can do it. Just needs special plants and the like"
[19:56:42]	Shimmershy	frowns a little bit and follows after the guardstallion. "Y-yeah... Her pies help a lot. I don't know why, to be honest." She sighs quietly. "We did bring one with us, though, so perhaps the doctors would be interested in inspecting it..."
[19:56:51]	Night_Wind	follows along and nods. "She believes she may be able to fully cure our friend who we left with her, but the herb she would need for it is grown in Unicornia where they charge outrageously for it. We certainly hope she's correct though."
[19:58:30]	Edna_Stonetalon	"You saw Rowan. She knew who she was and wasn't trying to get Wander to mount her anymore. She can do it"
[19:59:13]	Somber	He leads them into a large, long, low ceiling room. There was a control station and then a wall of glass. Rows and rows of planters filled with puny plants grew in troughs beyond the glass. There were a few beeps from the terminals and equipment. Then they saw a white mare... with a white mane... and white eyes... in a white lab coat. There was an
[19:59:55]	orange circle tattooed on her flank. The unicorn blinked at them and just stared. "Oh. Hello." she said softly.
[20:03:45]	"Um... Doctor Tangerine? This is... um... well... um... they... um..." The red stallion stammered as the strange white unicorn stared at all of them blankly.
[20:04:23]	Shimmershy	waves a forehoof with a small smile. "Hello... Um... W-we're hoping to find someone who might know enough about botany to help us cure our friend who's been poisoned..." She bit her lower lip gently. "We have a sample of the tea which we think helps hold off the poison. But we don't know how to cure him..."
[20:05:13]	Somber	She turned her milky eyes to Shimmershy. She stared for two beats. "And?"
[20:05:43]	Night_Wind	nodnods to Eddie. "Oh, certainly, but we haven't seen the effects of the other herb on Rowan yet, so we have no empirical proof of her claim. I do trust her, but we are dealing with scientists - best to be precise in our locution." She looks up then and smiles curiously at the mare they were lead to.
[20:07:35]	Somber	Those white eyes turn to Night and she looked slowly over her. "Oh. An Impelled Metamorphosis Potion subject." Then her white eyes returned to Shimmershy.
[20:07:48]	Shimmershy	frowns a little bit. "And we've got a sample of pumpkin pie which will help treat Phage poisoning and Madwood affects... S-so we came here hoping to find someone to trade some materials with in return for some help. W-we'd also heard that some ponies may have come here after a falling out with Sweet Tea, whom we were hoping to find out more from."
[20:08:46]	Edna_Stonetalon	blink blinks "A what subject now?"
[20:11:41]	Somber	"Impelled Metamorphosis Potion subject. Biological mutant giving physical traits of an alicorn with several innate magical abilities." She said as she looked at Edna, then returned to Shimmershy. "I'm afraid that I don't have time to deviate in my studies. Perhaps some other faculty members will be willing or able to assist you." She turned away and the
[20:11:42]	Night_Wind	blinks but then nods to the science mare. "Quite correct." Turning to Eddie, she explains, "She refers to the product of the Ministry of Arcane Science's last and greatest project which, due to the unfortunate timing of multiple megaspell impacts, produced the Goddess and all my 'sisters'."
[20:11:55]	Somber	red stallion gave a little sickly smile.
[20:12:58]	Shimmershy	frowns a few moments at that, tilting her head to one side. She looks towards the red stallion. "Are they all like this..?" She furrowed her brows and sighed quietly. How were they going to deal with this...
[20:13:21]	Night_Wind	clears her throat to address Dr. Tangerine. "I'm curious, what are you studying, if I may ask?"
[20:16:45]	Edna_Stonetalon	grumbles something about crazy scientist
[20:16:58]	Somber	"I am attempting to acertain the vectors by which phage infects and decays living subjects. We are not yet certain how the phage degrades subjects in their particular forms." She said simply. The red stallion cleared his voice and said softly, "Well... um... ma'am... the others are generally worse. Didn't you say that you had some pumpkin pie?" He asked

[20:19:38]	Shimmershy	nods her head to the stallion. "Yes... It was given to us by an elderly mare living in Headless. It helps with Phage infection, I think... A-and it tastes amazing." She smiles a little then looks down at her forehooves.
[20:20:07]	Somber	He looks at her and nods to the doctor.
[20:20:18]	Edna_Stonetalon	sighs and gets the pie "I'll give you a piece. Lets leave the smart ones to talk this over"

She approaches the doctor again. "Um. W-well, we might have something of interest to your research. Something which inhibits Phage decay, and can help remove it from the body!"
[20:24:39]	Night_Wind	smiles at Dr. Tangerine. "Oh, that IS a most worthwhile pursuit, yes. If you could determine the attack vectors, you could begin work on finding a way to block those vectors or possibly subvert them to destroy the phage when it tries to attack. I wish you the best of luck with your research!"
[20:26:25]	Somber	The white mare gives a little nod to Night Wind and then turns away, and then blinks and sniffs. She turned her head and looked towards the others. "Is that... is that some of Granny Pumpkin's pie?"
[20:26:47]	Edna_Stonetalon	grins "Why yes it is"
[20:27:50]	Somber	"Oh! It's been a while since I've had some! She really does make some of the tastiest pie in all the wastelands." She said as she happily trots over to the griffon.
[20:28:24]	Night_Wind	grins and nods enthusiastically. "Absolutely, though she did warn us it is only truly efficacious the first time you eat it."
[20:28:50]	Shimmershy	nods her head, trotting back towards Edna with the mare. "Y-yes. Yes it is. We were hoping you might be interested in it. Or somepony else out here might. We really do need help, and it's so hard to come by."
[20:30:38]	Somber	"Oh yes. We are quite interested in Granny's pie." She levitates up a slice and eats it with glee. "Mmmm... oh.... munch... mmm... so good!" She polished it off quickly and then dabbed her lips with a hankercheif. "Oh... that was quite nice. The ability for certain herbal concotions and folk remedies to affect phage has been hotly examined for three
[20:30:46]	Edna_Stonetalon	hands her a piece of pie "There you are."
[20:31:33]	Somber	years now. We've never been able to establish a causation! But it is truly delicious pie!" she said happily, blinking her strange white eyes as she looked from one to the next. "Now... um... what did you come here for?"
[20:33:02]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Our friend Wander here got poisoned at that Unicornia place. We got some of that temp cure they use to control the others. Think you can do something with it?"
[20:34:26]	Somber	She blinked and looked at him. "Oh certainly. A poison? Well we can put it into the analyzer and see what comes out the other side." She said as she frowned at Wanderlust. "It must certainly be a slow acting one. He doesn't appear to be in distress."
[20:34:32]	Shimmershy	nods her head. "Sweet Tea has been poisoning the unicorns in New Unicornia to keep them in line if they try to leave. We have a sample of her tea, and were hoping that somepony here could help find a way to make a permanent cure. It would help Wanderlust, and maybe the other ponies trapped there by her." She rubbed her forehoof against her other foreleg.
[20:35:17]	Shimmershy	"The ponies there said it took about a day before it would completely shut off his ability to use magic, and another day or two to be lethal." She sighed quietly and looked down. "B-but that's just what they told me..."
[20:35:56]	Night_Wind	smiles at the mare's reaction and makes a mental note to give Granny a hug next time she sees the mare.
[20:36:33]	Somber	She trots over to a machine. "Ooooh, new Unicornia and Sweet Tea. Yes. Doctor Sagebrush worked with her for several years, but he said he was dreadfully tired to her pro-unicorn racial agenda. That, and she killed him. He was quite put out by the whole thing." She said as her horn manipulated the equipment and she looked at Shimmershy. "Sample lease?"

[20:38:36]	Somber	"Of course. It wouldn't be the first time." She said with a little smile.

Well, I mean, there's what's in Wanderlust. But I have no idea how to get it out of him... S-so maybe the stuff which helps treat it would be useful..?" She looked down and shuffled a forehoof, the mention of Sagebrush and the

[20:39:21]	Edna_Stonetalon	is starting to get worried about this Olives place
[20:40:06]	Somber	"Of course not. He's a member of the faculty." She said simply as she waited for the tea.
[20:40:58]	Edna_Stonetalon	ponders "He's a clone isn't he"
[20:41:30]	Somber	"Clone? Please." She snorted and rolled her eyes. "We prefer the term Replicant."
[20:42:21]	Shimmershy	blinks and looks towards Edna at that, then back to the odd doctor. "O-oh... Um... W-well we're pretty sure Sweet Tea is a ghoul. O-or something similar." She sighs quietly and hangs her head a little, looking down towards her forehooves. "E-Edna. Would you get the tea please..?"
[20:44:01]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Wait... so all of you are 'replicents'? Wander has it"
[20:45:06]	Night_Wind	speaks up suggesting, "Considering how it works, I can't help but wonder if the poison doesn't somehow create a feedback loop in the unicorn's magic to direct the flow back on itself creating a harmonic dissonance. Just a hypothesis, of course, but it would explain how the poison prevents magic from naturally flowing out of the horn."

	Somber	"It is certainly possible. There were quite a few ghouls around before the phage. Sadly, we've noticed several strains that are quite keen on necrotic flesh." When Wander handed it over she poured some of it into the machine. It started to beep and whir as she magically pushed the buttons. "And no. Just members of the faculty. All others are assistants

[20:47:15]	Shimmershy	rubs her forehoof against her other foreleg nervously a few moments as she sighed quietly, looking down to the floor. "W-well... She... She knows a lot about botany. M-more than she should as a pony from after the war. A-and she's using some kind of magic to hide her real appearance. A-and her room makes ponies sick and die very quickly. P-plus... Plus the Ministry of
	Peace..." She trails off briefly and bites her lower lip, shaking her head. "Sh-she knows some things which wouldn't make any sense if they didn't come from before the war..."
[20:49:47]	Somber	"Well that sounds like it's a high probability that she is from before the war. All the faculty were also from before the war, but unfortunately the replication process leaves something to be desired." She said as she looked at the terminal. Then she frowned. "You're sure that it's a poison that she's giving? Because what was in that sample was not any
[20:50:03]	kind of antidote we have for a poison on file."
[20:51:24]	Edna_Stonetalon	"That explains the coloring..."
[20:52:06]	Somber	"Well that, and I used to be a stallion three iterations back." She replied.
[20:52:17]	Shimmershy	bites her lower lip. "I... I think so? It was something in the water he drank. It definitely affects unicorns and griffins, whatever it is. And that stuff I think stops its progression, at least temporarily." She sighed quietly. "D-do you have access to any Ministry of Peace research files here..? C-could you check it against them..?"
[20:52:54]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Could you make more?"
[20:53:34]	Night_Wind	nods along. "And as dear Shimmer implies, a ghoul would certainly fit those parameters, but since we have been unable to see her true form, we have not confirmed that hypothesis. I really doubt we will enjoy the revelation if she is something other than a ghoul. But you say what we gave you isn't an antitoxin...so could the agent ingested be biological instead? A disease
[20:53:35]	or parasite perhaps? The tea might inhibit growth of the foreign organisms."
[20:55:21]	Somber	"It would take resources to synthesize more that I'm afraid we can't spare. Aside from the mundane herbal ingredeiants, there is a chemical preservative. Harmless in the concentrations in the sample." She looked at Nightwind. "If there was an organism inside him, this chemical would retard the growth for several hours."
[20:56:54]	Shimmershy	frowns, rubbing one forehoof against her other foreleg. "Th-then that might be it. Something transmittable by liquid... Then.. Then treated with this tea every few hours..." She frowned and shook her head. "Um... W-well could we get a list of what's in it..? Even... Even if you don't have the materials here we might be able to get it elsewhere. Th-there has to be some

[20:57:36]	Somber	She prints out a list of strange words and passes it to shimmershy.
[20:59:29]	Shimmershy	takes the list and peers at it a few moments before slowly folding it up and tucking it away. "I... Um... I don't suppose your records here contain any spells do they..? Something... Something which could remove an illusion spell would be really useful..."
[21:01:44]	Night_Wind	looks over Shimmer's shoulder aand frowns. "Several of those herbs are rather rare, and one or two I don't recognize. I have a bad feeling we will run out of tea before we find all of these ingredients, at least not without visiting Unicornia itself. On the other hoof, at least we now have the recipe to make more. That could earn us the loyalty of the unicorns and griffons
	if we can prove it works."
[21:02:02]	Somber	"I'm sorry, but Doctor Sparkle is in charge of magical research and she is rather taciturn and anti social." She said with a sad smile.
[21:03:01]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Thanks doc. It's a start"
[21:03:36]	Night_Wind	blinks. "Dr. Sparkle? Any relation to the Ministry mare?"
[21:04:16]	Somber	"Of course," she said with a little nod.
[21:05:54]	Shimmershy	glances towards Night_Wind and then her other friends. "W-well we'd like to at least see her if that's possible..? I don't know if it'll work out well. But it's important. N-not just for this." She bit her lower lip.
[21:05:56]	Night_Wind	blinks several times more, her eyebrows arching high. "Well, that's quite interesting! I wasn't aware any relatives survived! Oh, they would simply love to meet her at Tenpony Tower!"
[21:07:14]	Edna_Stonetalon	"Don't get your hopes up Fumbles. I'm guessing she be a clone of Twilight Sparkle"
[21:10:13]	Somber	"Replicant!" she said primly and looked at Night Wind. "Regardless, she is very anti social and does not allow outsiders to interfere with her research. I would not suggest speaking to her lightly."
[21:12:08]	Night_Wind	shakes her head. "Oh, I don't expect Twilight's essence to be present. If Littlepip's experiences are correct, Twilight Sparkle was consumed by the Goddess, and when the Goddess was destroyed, the last vestiges of Twilight's spirit didn't last long after. Still, even if this is an imperfect copy or a replicant of one of Twilight's relatives, I'm sure she's positively
[21:12:09]	brilliant. If it is a replicant of Twilight Sparkle, I expect she'll be pleased to know that the Gardens of Equestria worked as planned."
[21:12:21]	Shimmershy	frowns. "It's... It's really important." She sighs quietly and looks down, biting her lower lip. "I... Um... W-we could really use her help with this. I-if at all possible..."
[21:18:04]	Somber	She sighed and shrugged. "Very well then. If you can convince her to help you..." She looked at the red Stallion. "Go ahead and take them to the Arcane Sciences Lab. Be cautious." And then she looked at the others. "I hope that you can convince her her assist you. She's an esteemed member of the faculty, but difficult." She looked over at Edna.
[21:18:17]	"I don't suppose I could have one more slice, may I?"
[21:19:36]	Edna_Stonetalon	shrugs "Why not" and gives her another small piece
[21:20:34]	Somber	"Thank you!" She squealed and then munched it down happily as she returned to her research.
[21:21:22]	Shimmershy	bowed her head briefly. "Th-thank you." She turns to follow the guardstallion up, quietly contemplating what was going on here and likely to be a problem.
[21:21:40]	Edna_Stonetalon	sighs "Right then so we go bother the next mad scientist?"
