4. The dull sound of a voice and jabs of pressure in one arm woke the eighteen-year-old. He came to his senses slowly. Castus's short lashes separated, revealing his pale green irises and large pupils. His eyes lazily tracked upward, but halted, the pupils growing tiny and frightened as he realized that a strange man was hovering over him.
5.
6. He pushed his palms against the cold, shuddering ground in an attempt to get up, to get away from the Outsider. However, stinging pain enveloped his arms. His adrenaline rush over, he had to reckon with the numerous slits and bruises that had only recently begun to heal over. Before long, his entire body once again burned in agony.
7.
8. Especially harsh was the cilice biting into the flesh on his leg. He hadn't taken the time to remove it before he had leapt over the fence surrounding his home. Its metal teeth dug into his flesh now; around his thigh was a ring of punctures and scratches that wet his shorts with blood. Just sliding his knee against the ground made him bite his lip.
9.
10. His stare was dutifully trained on this Outsider while he struggled to right himself. You're vulnerable, Castus! You better run before he shoves you back down, slits your throat, and makes off with everything on you. That's what Outsiders do. They're monsters, foul-blooded beasts that could care less about you.
11.
12. Castus's gaze fell on the "monster's" face. He was young, only a little older than Castus, and- how to put this?- his features were what the wounded boy perceived to be handsome. Though he squinted, scrutinizing, he could find no evidence of malice. Who says they have to look like demons to be demons? the voice in his head scoffed. It's the ones that look honest and respectable that you have to look out for. They're the ones who lull you into a world of trust and then betray you when it profits them.
13.
14. But what good would running do? He couldn't fight; he didn't even want to move in this state. It was clear that he was at the mercy of this Outsider for the time being. And wasn't this what he wanted? To get to know the Outsiders, and to understand for whom he endured his sacrifice. There was no turning back now.
