As the last of the hooded bandits crumpled to the ground, the knight fell to one knee, her chest heaving. Her king's eyes darted around the field briefly, but after a moment he sighed in relief, and looped his bow over his shoulder. "I think that's all of them..."
The knight braced her sword against the ground and pushed herself to her feet. "Aye..." She turned to face him, prying free a crossbow bolt from the side of her breastplate. "Our smiths truly outdid themselves with this suit. Remind me to personally thank them once we return to..." She trailed off, her eyes losing focus, staring into infinity. "...return to... nothing to return to..."
The relief the king had felt mere moments before twisted into dread. "What is it? What do you see?"
She snapped back into the present with a lurch. "Ah-! ...No. We won't make it in time... None but death will remain to greet us at the capital."
"What-..." Taking a breath to maintain his composure, he repeats the question: "What... did you see?"
The knight pauses, trying to make sense of the flurry of images that had flown through her mind. "...We're surrounded. The invading force will be on top of us before nightfall." A pause, then she continues, "The forest is our only chance."
The trembling in her arms and the slight sway in her posture did not escape the king's attention. "Will you be able to fight so many?" A meaningless question - they both knew the answer.
"...Take my sword if I fall."
