  3. In this section, we address offenses that directly target individuals and their safety.

  5. Criminal Threats
  6. (a) Any person who communicates to another, in person, writing, or through media, that they will physically harm or kill that person, causing a reasonable state of fear for their safety, is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 30 minutes.

  8. (b) Any person who communicates a threat to physically harm or kill the close friends or relatives of another person, in person, writing, or through media, is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 30 minutes.

  10. Assault
  11. A person who unlawfully attempts to cause a violent injury to another and has the ability to do so is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 40 minutes.

  13. Assault on a Peace Officer
  14. A person who unlawfully attempts to cause a violent injury to a peace officer engaged in the performance of their duties and has the ability to do so is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 55 minutes.

  16. Assault on a State Employee
  17. A person who unlawfully attempts to cause a violent injury to a state employee engaged in the performance of their duties and has the ability to do so is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 50 minutes.

  19. Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  20. A person who attempts to cause immediate harm or threatens another person while using a weapon, tool, or other dangerous item to convey that threat is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  22. Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer
  23. A person who attempts to cause immediate harm or threatens a peace officer engaged in the performance of their duties while using a weapon, tool, or other dangerous item to convey that threat is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  25. Battery
  26. Any person who intentionally and unlawfully uses force or violence to cause physical harm to another person is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 45 minutes.

  28. Battery on a Peace Officer
  29. Any person who intentionally and unlawfully uses force or violence to cause physical harm to a peace officer engaged in the performance of their duties is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 55 minutes.

  31. Battery on a State Employee
  32. Any person who intentionally and unlawfully uses force or violence to cause physical harm to a state employee engaged in the performance of their duties is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 50 minutes.

  34. Aggravated Battery
  35. (a) A person who uses significant or continuous force or violence against another person, resulting in severe harm, is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  37. (b) A person who uses a weapon, tool, or other dangerous item to cause severe harm to another is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 2 hours.

  39. Manslaughter
  40. A person who unlawfully kills another human being without malice is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 3 hours.
  41.  
  42. (a) Voluntary manslaughter occurs in the heat of passion or sudden quarrel.
  43.  
  44. (b) Involuntary manslaughter happens during the commission of an unlawful act not amounting to a felony or in the commission of a lawful act with undue caution.
  45.  
  46. (c) Vehicular manslaughter involves causing someone's death while operating a motor vehicle in a severely reckless and deliberate manner or while evading peace officers in a motor vehicle, directly or indirectly causing someone's death.

  48. False Imprisonment
  49. (a) A person who detains or arrests another without their consent (or the consent of their guardian) without premeditated intent or ransom is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  51. (b) A person who performs an unlawful citizen's arrest is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 45 minutes.

  53. Kidnapping
  54. (a) Any person who forcibly or through instilling fear, steals, takes, holds, detains, or arrests another person without their consent (or the consent of their guardian) with the premeditated intent to do so is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

  56. (b) Any person who seizes, confines, entices, decoys, abducts, conceals, or carries away another person with the intent to hold or detain them, or who holds or detains that person for ransom, reward, or to commit extortion, is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 2 hours and 50 minutes.

  58. Mayhem
  59. A person who causes pain and suffering for the purpose of revenge, extortion, persuasion, or for any sadistic purpose, or a person who intentionally disfigures, disables, or aggressively destroys or damages a body part or area of a person's body is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

  61. Stalking
  62. (a) Any person who intentionally and maliciously follows or harasses another person, despite that person expressing their non-consent to such behavior, is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 35 minutes.
  63.  
  64. (b) Any person who violates an official restraining order issued by a court is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a sentence of 30 minutes.
  65.  
  66. Human Trafficking
  67. (a) Any person who intentionally restricts another person's liberty with the intent to subject them to forced labor, sex trafficking, or other forced activities is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 2 hours.
  68.  
  69. (b) Any person who intentionally smuggles non-citizens into the state without proper visas and authorization is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  70.  
  71. Murder
  72. (a) Murder in the First Degree involves unlawfully killing another person through the use of a destructive device or explosive, ammunition designed primarily to penetrate metal or armor, poison, lying in wait, torture, or any other deliberate and premeditated killing. A murder committed against a peace officer engaged in the performance of their duties is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 8 hours.

  74. (b) Any person who unlawfully kills another human being without premeditation but with malice aforethought is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 8 hours.
  75.  
  76. (c) Felony murder occurs when a person commits murder while engaging in a felony offense that has been proven to be a premeditated act. Felony murder (187c) shall be charged along with the original felony offense(s) committed leading to the murder, and the guilty person is punishable by a sentence of 8 hours.

  78. Robbery
  79. Any person who takes property from another person against their will, using force or fear, is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  80.  
  81. Carjacking
  82. Any person who takes a motor vehicle from another person's possession, from the person or immediate presence of the vehicle's owner or a passenger, using force or fear, is guilty of a felony, punishable by a sentence of 2 hours.[/font]
