- I'mma gonna type a buncha words on streaming and microphones and stuff cause it's ded at work.
- When i started getting things together for the idea that is "teh shingen's internet video game stream", the first immediate question was microphones. Well, the first question in my head was "cam or no cam" but the SECOND question was microphone.
- If you're dealing with phones, or low bitrate voice comms, you got a lot more leeway in terms of equipment. But you can set OBS to CD quality, so you wanna THINK cd quality - OR WOULD YOU?
- CD quality is putting yourself in a sound booth and using a condenser mic. It's a STUDIO mic, and that's the trap a lotta people get themselves into.
- Let's talk about a few studio microphones and why they're perfectly fine if you're in a quiet space or can afford a bunch of other crud - I'm talking CONDENSER microphones here, like the Blue Snowball, Blue Yeti, AT2020, Razer Seiren, Rode NT1... these are all EXCELLENT MICROPHONES OF SIGNIFICANT QUALITY. However, for a noisy room, like if you wanna run a fan or something, they're total crap! Skip ahead to the paragraph that talks about xlr interfaces.
- The secret weapon has been sitting right in front of your face every time you've seen a musician live at a club or whatever. CHEAP DYNAMIC MICROPHONES! I've got a Pyle Pro PDMIC78 (bout twenty canuck bucks with shipping) and when coupled with my xlr interface, it sounds very very good. I might be able to get even better sound going for the Shure SM58 it's based off of, if I wanted to spend more money.
- But your cheap dynamic microphone is going to still sound cheap if you just plug that sucka into the computer's microphone port. What really gets that sound going is a decent XLR INTERFACE that connects via usb. The Yeti and Snowball have no need for such things, as they already have a xlr usb interface built in, same with the AT2020USB. But if you ever wanna use that XLR plug on your Yeti Pro or Seiren Pro, you'll want an interface. I went kinda cheap with a Behringer UM2 (set me back 45 canuck bucks, on Amazon back when I had prime so free shipping)
- TLDR: You will get surprisingly good results out of a 10 dollar mic, and a 40 dollar interface, there's no need to jump straight to $100+ purchases.
