"Space Colonies Are Impossible" Tomino Yoshiyuki Denounces the "World of Gundam"

Tomino Yoshiyuki, Fukui Harutoshi, and Fukue Jun participated in the event.

9th March, the event to learn about space through Gundam, "Introduction to Astronomy by Gundam" was opened at Roppongi Hills, with 190 people including Gundam fans and astronomy fans (astronomy has fans?). At the event, "Kidou Senshi Gundam" (as in the original) series director Tomino Yushoyuki said things such as "the world of Gundam is unrealistic" while laughing and answering fans' questions about the space.

Also at this event was the writer of "Kidou Senshi Gundam UC" and "Boukoku no Aegis", Fukui Harutoshi and SF anime connoisseur-cum-astronomer Fukue Jun. The three had a three-man open discussion style seminar in which they discussed various thing such as the depth and wonder of space which is also the stage for Gundam, environmental issues, and other subjects concerning astronomy and Earth.

Subjects including many interesting things such as "are the cylindrical space colonies in Gundam really possible" "is the existence of space necessary" and "an example of calculating Lagrange points". From the beginning Tomino said "I've been thinking about this for 30 years, but I'm still skeptical of how people could live in space colonies. After all, creating colonies is impossible for human engineering" to which Fukui responded "What, you're saying a world like Gundam's is impossible!?". "Well duh, it's a cartoon!" said Tomino laughing, who from the beginning to end kept the room laughing with his light exchange of jokes.

Regarding the names of the various colonies and how he worked out the finer details of the story, he said "it just kind of came to me there and then, so I don't remember (chuckle). I named stuff solely based on how I felt at the time". "It's because this guy portrays ridiculously unrealistic things as realistic that we (people who create Gundam) are troubled so" said Fukui who had problems bouncing ideas off the original Gundam.

After the event we interviewed the people participating and got replies such as "I've been a GUndam fan since I was in elementary school so it was really great to be able to see and hear director Tomino in the flesh. I like astronomy enough to be in a club, but I still learned a lot today." (male, 19), "It was intersting to hear about the colloboration between animation and astronomy, and hearing insider stuff.' (female, 40). Also, even after the event many fans surrounded Tomino, filling the room with much excitement.

Last paragraph is about how the event had been planned to have everyone look at stars after the seminar but it was cancelled because of snow.
