The emergency whistle sounded again, this time with a low tone that split
the darkness. Whoooo, whoooo, whoooo . . .
Right as the third whistle ended, there was a sudden flash! A tremendous
burst of white-hot light illuminated the surface of the sea.
Whoosh! The seawater began to turn, forming a massive whirlpool. “My
god!” thought the crew. But no sooner had they reacted than the entire boat
was bathed in a strange light, and the enormous Bingo-maru began to tilt.
The crew screamed and rushed toward the cabin. It was as if the ship was
doing its best to throw the sailors overboard as it started its descent into the
deep water.
