  1. 1. Part 1
  2. 1. Begins with the convoy crossing a mountainous region. The convoy consists of National Guard troops, non-combat troops, with only a small portion of it actually consisting of infantry.
  3. 2. Staff Sergeant Paulsen, PFC Hernandez, Diaz, a reporter and Miller joke around.
  4. 3. Diaz goes to ask them all a question, opens his notebook. The question reads, “What do you guys have waiting for you back home?”
  5. 4. As he flips the page, the convoy is attacked. The Humvee in front of them flares up as an explosion of thermite takes out the vehicle in front of them.
  6. 1. Part 2
  7. 1. The Humvee in front, middle, and rear of the convoy explode and catches fire.
  8. 1. These vehicles carry the infantry units providing convoy security.
  9. 2. Don and his group are right behind the middle vehicle.
  10. 1. The vehicles in the convoy line start taking fire from the mountain across from them.
  11. 2. The group get out of the MRAP and starts taking stock of the situation.
  12. 3. Don, taking a moment to assess the situation, looks around him, sees the wounded and dead.
  13. 4. Don passes his rifle to Diaz, having taught him previously how to shoot “If shit ever got that bad.” He gives him the magazines off his plate carrier and armed with his M9, a medical kit, and a knife heads out to start doing his job.
  14. 1. Part 3
  15. 1. The realization sets in. Don starts getting rid of unnecessary weight and passes his weapon to the reporter.
  16. 1. Conrad sits on the .50 and gets shot in the vest, causing him to fall inside the MRAP.
  17. 2. All the while, screams ring out in the burning hummer next to Don, causing him to go faster.
  18. 3. Behind them, James can be seen setting up a mortar tube with a few others.
  19. 4. He reaches in, grabs his medical IFAK, then returns to check on the men next to him.
  20. 5. Miller helps Diaz calm down his shots.
  21. 6. Don checks his Beretta, tells the others to cover him and runs over to the burning Humvee.
  22. 1. Part 4
  23. 1. The screams grow louder as he approaches, the smell causes him to vomit as the screaming still goes on.
  24. 2. He tries to get inside but the flames inside cause him to move away.
  25. 3. Don watches his comrades cook inside the vehicle and decides the best course of action is to fire his Beretta into the burning Humvee.
  26. 1. Even with the gunfire going off around him, it goes silent for him. He holsters his handgun, and notices that someone has seen him doing this.
  27. 1. He looks at them, nods, and moves to treat wounded.
  28. 1. He runs back to his MRAP to check on everyone. As everyone is giving a status report, Diaz gets shot in the side of the neck. The round is a graze and Don treats him and keeps him in the fight.
  29. 2. Another soldier shouts in pain. Don investigates this and finds that he has a spinal injury. Against Don’s wishes, the soldier, Cho coordinates the nine line.
  30. 1. Part 5
  31. 1. Don begins moving toward the rear of the convoy as RPGs come down, keeping the wounded out of the line of fire. He approaches an officer who coordinates fire support from the air but is refused NATO ground forces.
  32. 1. Afghan National Army forces are dispatched to the site.
  33. 2. Upon asking for a situation report, he finds that the convoy is taking fire and that units are unable to move.
  34. 1. Don continues to rescue people, getting Parks to stand back up after he’s grazed by a ricochet
  35. 1. Part 6
  36. 1. At this point, Don has all the wounded except for two.
  37. 2. His teammate begins to move him across as armored units arrive and provide support.
  38. 3. An RPG goes off and hits the two, the combination of blood and gore falling into his mouth.
  39. 1. He spits out a part, looks down and cries out in agony for a moment.
  40. 2. The dust settles and there’s nothing to be seen, causing his hand to shake and for him to freak out more.
  41. 3. He’s pulled back by Conrad as he screams. Conrad smacks him. Don’s frozen in fear as the severity of everything hits.
  42. 1. Armored units and infantry arrive pulling the wounded away and pushing the attackers back.
  43. 1. Part 7
  44. 1. Don and the group in the convoy are evacuated. Don sits in a Stryker and lights a cigarette right as the rear doors open and the wounded around him are taken away.
  45. 2. He gets himself a canteen and rinses the blood out of his mouth, then pukes.
  46. 3. A medic goes to check on him and he pushes them away.
  47. 4. His men approach him, and rather than waiting for a debrief, he sends those not wounded to get themselves cleaned up and to come back.
  48. 1. Part 8
  49. 1. He goes away, passing by Nick Fletcher, an SAS soldier he’d befriended along the way. Parks follows him as well, having a bad feeling about Don.
  50. 2. He goes inside a shower trailer, puts a gun in his mouth, guilty over the men he was unable to save, claiming to himself that he wasn’t doing well enough, only for Nick and Parks to restrain him and put him on suicide watch.
