  1. 3:48:52 PM <•Teller|GM> "Ready, Candela?" The heroine next to her asks. The Zenith van comes to a slow stop and Cassette turns the key, killing the engine. It's still and quiet for a moment, save for the pounding of rain on the roof. It's almost completely black outside of the windows - while there are bright lights in the distance, the only light in the immediate area is the soft
  2. 3:48:52 PM <•Teller|GM> glow of Helen's field.
  3. 3:48:52 PM <•Teller|GM> Was she ready? It's quite the question. Her quiet night of bonding with Cassette had been interrupted by the news that the Brotherhood manor had been blown down by the leader of the Wolves, Big Bad. The surrounding area of Marimer had taken some collateral damage as well. They had driven past some more than a little property damage on the way to "ground
  4. 3:48:52 PM <•Teller|GM> zero', and there were reports of injured civilians from Plower. The Brotherhood capes were all unaccounted for, as were the Wolves. Any of them could be out there in the dark, waiting.
  5. 3:48:52 PM <•Teller|GM> On top of that, the clock clock reads 11:03 PM. Little more than twenty minutes to go before she had to take care of her other task.
  6. 3:48:52 PM <•Teller|GM> Was she ready? ||
  7. 3:53:47 PM ↔ Woden popped in
  8. 3:59:20 PM <Dol|Helen> Despite having worked at a hospital for several years, Helen had never actually done work as an EMT. She'd worked in the emergency room plenty of times, but ultimately the patients had still been brought to her. Going out and finding wounded people was going to be a new experience, especially given how many other factors were at play. Even setting aside the weather and Helen's general inexperience at search and rescue, this would be her
  9. 3:59:20 PM <Dol|Helen> first act of public heroism, where people are looking towards her and her leotard and glittery cape for aid and comfort.
  10. 3:59:20 PM <Dol|Helen> She swallows nervously as she does a last pat down of her medical bag, ensuring she had everything she could imagine herself needing in order to do her work. It wasn't the most heroic looking accessory, but Helen's leotard didn't exactly have much by way of pockets. She missed her lab coat. Firming her resolve, and deciding that nothing else she did at this point would accomplish anything except procrastination, Helen nods to Cassette.
  11. 3:59:23 PM <Dol|Helen> "As I'll ever be."

  14. 4:09:59 PM <•Teller|GM> "Good," Cassette says. She sounds quite serious, but gives Helen a small, reassuring smile before continuing. "We're going to meet up with Plower, then coordinate with the PRT. Wicht's parents were worried about the RFS warning, so he won't be joining us tonight."
  15. 4:09:59 PM <•Teller|GM> She pushes open the driver-side door the to van, and steps out into the rain. "Do you want to do search and rescue, or help with triage? Purple Parrot says they need more help with both of those." ||
  16. 4:11:59 PM <•Teller|GM> ((*search and rescue, or triage?))
  17. 4:13:43 PM <Dol|Helen> "I can do search and rescue," Helen answers, thinking to her favor. She would do better at triage, but it wouldn't let her roam as much as was needed. She opens her own door, then, joining Cassette in the ongoing storm.
  18. 4:13:43 PM <Dol|Helen> "I can fly, and I have a light source on me," she explains, raising her voice to be heard through the weather. Actually, now that she thought about it, her power was rather fantastic for search and rescue. Her light could be brighter, and being an actual Alexandria package would help with moving rubble, but she wasn't going to complain. She had one heck of a leg up over any unpowered person doing the same job.
  19. 4:13:44 PM <Dol|Helen> ||
  20. 4:14:45 PM Thalia → WreckingThal
  21. 4:40:49 PM <•Teller|GM> "Okay," Cassette agrees. She begins moving towards the lights in the distance. There are no helicopters due to the inclement weather, but there are bright flashlight beams sweeping across the ground as well as flashing emergency lights.
  22. 4:40:49 PM <•Teller|GM> As they draw closer, the scale of the operation becomes more apparent. It's not quite like anything she's seen before. The closest comparison is to the images of disaster relief she's seen on television, and even that description doesn't do the scene justice.
  23. 4:40:49 PM <•Teller|GM> PRT officers patrol the wall around the Brotherhood's estate, peering into the darkness for any sort of threat. A girl in brown overalls and tan armor is moving along the perimeter, occasionally leaning down and doing something to the ground. Metal walls of at least twenty feet sprout up in her wake, weaving into each other as well as the already present
  24. 4:40:49 PM <•Teller|GM> stone wall. In this manner, two sides of the estate have been covered, and she's halfway down a third.
  25. 4:40:49 PM <•Teller|GM> Large tan tents are set up on the street in front of the Brotherhood's gates. Police officers stand and talk beneath one tent, and ambulances and medical personnel are clustered around another. Near the gate, she sees a spray of foam being launched, followed by a loud gunshot - a PRT squad and its leader, Beck, dealing with a large arachnid of some sort.
  26. 4:40:49 PM <•Teller|GM> Cassette walks purposefully past the roadblocks, and begins moving towards one of the larger tents. A police officer nods respectfully to her as they pass. ||
  27. 4:48:01 PM <Dol|Helen> Helen follows along behind the heroine, doing her best not to ogle. She can't help but to feel out of place, going into a field of established superheroes and the people who work with them. Compared to everyone here, who had actual practice and experience, Helen was just a woman in a cape. She was here because she could fly, not because she had earned it.
  28. 4:48:01 PM <Dol|Helen> She tries her best to look calm, confident, and like she belonged. Like how she would look if she were there as a doctor, instead of a cape. She would have to do more to prove herself, now that she was wearing a different uniform, but she /had/ earned skills that were relevant to the situation at hand. She could do this.

  34. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> Try as she might, she can't help but feel out of place here. Candela still seems like a costume that Helen is playing dress up as, and she suspects that everyone around her can see it.
  35. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> Cassette, on the other hand, somehow manages to make walking onto a disaster site in yellow boots and a cape seem natural. She leads Helen into what seems to be a command center of sorts. People mill in and out, talking to a youngish man and woman on laptops, or checking in with one of the Protectorate heroes. Two of them currently seem to be in the tent.
  36. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> She recognizes them from Cassette's stories: Purple Parrot and Finial.
  37. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> Purple Parrot is a lithe, pale woman with shoulder length reddish-brown hair. She wears black dress pants, dress shoes, and a purple domino mask with a vaguely beak-like nose. On her wrists she wears purple cloth bracers. Her top is dark purple, sleeveless, and tight fitting. A black trim lines the edges, and a row of metallic, offset buttons hold it shut. A
  38. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> rainbow colored pocket square sticks out of a breast pocket.
  39. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> Finial is tall, well over six feet. He's wearing a green, flowing jumpsuit with silver highlights, flat black shoes, black gloves, and a wide silver mask that fits over his face. The mask is contoured in the shape of a neutral face, but with a hint of a smile. A glimpse of dark skin and brown eyes can be seen behind the mask.
  40. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> The outline of his frame is hard to make out beneath his loose-fitting costume, but what is visible seems athletic, muscled.
  41. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> "Cass!" Finial says, brightening up.
  42. 5:08:32 PM <•Teller|GM> "Hey Fin," Cassette says. ||

  44. 5:15:07 PM <Dol|Helen> Helen finds herself mildly annoyed by the abbreviation of what had already been two very short names. At least Cassette had yet to call her Hel, as she did not care for such nonsense at all. Her annoyance, however, is drowned out by how inadequate and out of place she feels.
  45. 5:15:07 PM <Dol|Helen> She moves slightly closer towards Cassette, partially hiding herself behind the more experienced heroine. She would defer the Protectorate heroes to Cassette as much as she could, for now, and just chime in when it became a question of medical matters. She just had to hope that no one would call her out on how little she fit in. Helen really couldn't wait to start on the actual search and rescue.
  46. 5:15:08 PM <Dol|Helen> ||
  47. 5:25:53 PM <•Teller|GM> Cassette shifts slightly herself, so that the two of them are side by side instead. She gives Helen a light, friendly bump with her shoulder as she does so.
  48. 5:25:53 PM <•Teller|GM> "Take Ampersand and as many men as you need to secure the west perimeter," Purple Parrot says to Hamilton. She sounds terse and professional. "Then connect with Red and form a team to cut a path to the manor. Your choice of capes, as long as they're not on S&R."
  49. 5:25:53 PM <•Teller|GM> Hamilton nods, then walks out of the tent. Purple Parrot turns to the two new arrivals.
  50. 5:25:53 PM <•Teller|GM> "Cassette," she says, a little more warmly than how she was speaking to the squad leader. She then turns her gaze to Helen. "You must be Candela." ||
  51. 5:30:10 PM <Dol|Helen> "Yes," Helen answers with a firm nod, trying not to be bothered by her earlier doubts on the topic. Cassette seemed to have faith that she could do this without making a fool of herself, so Helen would just have to try her best to prove the heroine right.

  60. 5:42:30 PM <•Teller|GM> "Flight and glowing," Purple Parrot lists. The warmth isn't entirely gone from her voice, but she now sounds more professional. Helen also detects slight hint of uncertainty underneath it, and she recalls Cassette mentioning that she was new to being the Protectorate leader. "Do you have any offensive power?"
  61. 5:42:30 PM <•Teller|GM> "Where's Plower?" Cassette asks, directing her question to the Ward. "We were supposed to meet him here."
  62. 5:42:30 PM <•Teller|GM> "We had a few runners," Finial explains. "Allele's creatures. Plower volunteered to hunt them down before they passed beyond the farthest perimeter." ||
  63. 5:42:48 PM <•Teller|GM> ((*a slight hint))
  64. 5:48:28 PM <Dol|Helen> Helen nods affirmatively, not wanting to outright lie to the leader of the Protectorate, new though she may be. She still didn't want to tell her, though. Telling Cassette had been trial enough.
  65. 5:48:28 PM <Dol|Helen> "It's," she starts, pauses, shifts her posture somewhat, and then nervously continues, "I don't like fighting. I was hoping to help with S&R," she hefts her medical bag with her right arm, flashing the red cross on both to Purple Parrot.
  66. 5:48:38 PM <Dol|Helen> ||
  67. 6:00:40 PM <•Teller|GM> Purple Parrot nods back, then looks at the two people on the laptops. "Comms?"
  68. 6:00:40 PM <•Teller|GM> "Finished five minutes ago," the young woman answers, a bit haughtily, without looking up. Part of her head is shaved, and her makeup is bold. It doesn't seem very professional, but perhaps the PRT has different standards for their employees.
  69. 6:00:40 PM <•Teller|GM> "Okay," Purple Parrot says. She looks to Cassette. "Given your powers, I'm going to put you both on S&R. You're both patched into a temporary shared channel. Keep us updated."
  70. 6:00:40 PM <•Teller|GM> "You're going to /ask/ us to do S&R," Cassette reminds her, but with a smile. "But of course."
  71. 6:00:40 PM <•Teller|GM> "Be careful," Purple Parrot responds, looking at both of them, just as Finial says. "Keep your eyes open out there."
  72. 6:00:40 PM <•Teller|GM> "You too," Cassette responds. ||
  73. 6:04:46 PM <Dol|Helen> "Thank you," Helen replies with another nod. She glances at Cassette, then, not certain what to do next. Did they just leave? Was there more to it? The conversation had sounded pretty finished, but Helen still wasn't sure what to get up to. At least Purple Parrot hadn't made an issue of Helen's ability for offense. With any luck they wouldn't need her well wishes for safety, either.

  75. 6:04:47 PM <Dol|Helen> ||
  76. 6:12:25 PM <•Teller|GM> They do appear to be finished, given that Cassette walks out of the tent and back into the rain. Another voice suddenly comes onto Helen's earpiece, male. "We need 14th from Commercial to Grand covered, Franklin from 14th to 17th, and Exchange from 16th to 20th covered."
  77. 6:12:25 PM <•Teller|GM> "Roger, Ampersand," Cassette says, then looks at Helen. "We can stay together, if you'd like, but I think I might slow you down. Would you be comfortable covering different areas?" ||
  78. 6:23:25 PM <Dol|Helen> "Yes," Helen answers nervously. She frowns at herself, then, with more resolve, repeats, "Yes." She then takes a few moments for herself, thinking of where she was meant to be and which S&R sector it would be closest to. She'd still have to leave her designated range, but it should be doable. She reaches a hand up to her ear, activating her comm, briefly thankful that she can work the piece of tech through her glow. She did not envy
  79. 6:23:25 PM <Dol|Helen> Cassette's lack of protection in this weather.
  80. 6:23:25 PM <Dol|Helen> "I'll take 14th from Commercial to Grand," she answers, addressing both Ampersand and Cassette. She lets go of the button, then, and offers a friendly wave to the heroine. Looking confident was out of the question, so Helen tried to simply not look frightened.
  81. 6:23:26 PM <Dol|Helen> "I should be fine, Cassette. This is something I can do, and I can always call if I run into trouble."

  87. 6:31:57 PM <•Teller|GM> Cassette nods. She seems to pick up on the fact that Helen's nervous, but she probably thinks that the emotion stems from being out as a hero for the first time.
  88. 6:31:57 PM <•Teller|GM> "I'll take Franklin," Cassette says into her comm, then addresses Helen only. "Stay high enough that none of Allele's creatures can get you. Call for backup if you see any Brotherhood or Wolf capes. And-"
  89. 6:31:57 PM <•Teller|GM> She stops, and then gives her a smile of her own. "Sorry. I'll see you in a little bit. I'm proud of you, Candela." ||
  90. 6:38:42 PM <Dol|Helen> Helen recoils in surprise at Cassette's last sentence, as she is completely taken aback. Blood rushes to her face in the most thorough blush Helen has had in years. Cassette was proud of her? It was such a nice thing to say, and Helen felt torn over it. She didn't deserve it, not with what she was here to do.
  91. 6:38:42 PM <Dol|Helen> "T-thank you," she finally says, unable to keep the lingering pleasant surprise from her voice. "What were you going to say? Any advice would be super helpful."

  101. 8:02:44 PM <•Teller|GM> She rockets into the air, her glow probably making her look like some sort of falling star moving in reverse. A dazzling sight, for any who are watching.
  102. 8:02:44 PM <•Teller|GM> The wind and rain whips around her as she shoots off towards her target at upwards of forty miles per hour, but her glow protects her from any negative effects.
  103. 8:02:44 PM <•Teller|GM> Her view of the area widens, even as the figures and lights below her shrink away. The heroes and emergency responders are spread out in a rough circle around the estate, concentrated around the spaces that the silver barrier has yet to be put in place.
  104. 8:02:44 PM <•Teller|GM> The scope of the devastation caused by Big Bad is breathtaking. On her journey up 14th, she sees downed trees and power lines, porch furniture sticking through windows...one house is partially collapsed, with the majority of the roof lying submerged in the backyard pool. It's almost absurd that one person should have so much destructive power.
  105. 8:02:44 PM <•Teller|GM> The light in her mind pulses softly. ||
  106. 8:15:01 PM <Dol|Helen> Helen can't help but compare her own potential to that of Big Bad. She had badly marred the river, and could only imagine how things might have gone if she'd decided to fling that kind of power at something so fragile as a building. The comparison is worrying, but wrong. Helen made better decisions than Big Bad did; she'd joined Zenith.
  107. 8:15:02 PM <Dol|Helen> She had something she needed to do, though, and a very specific time at which to do it. A specific time which she had no means of knowing about. Her costume was ridiculous. She'd just have to stay in the general area, working towards the rendezvous point.

People might be able to see her, but the reverse isn't true - the glow doesn't illuminate very well at her current altitude. Helen can make out the property damage in the darkness, but she can't see if there's anyone that needs to be helped. And without being able to search, she can't rescue.
  114. 8:21:53 PM <•Teller|GM> ||
  115. 8:29:34 PM <Dol|Helen> This was unideal. Maybe she should just go wait at the rendezvous point, and try to figure things out from there. She could get closer to the rubble, but she really didn't want to. Cassette had told her to stay aloft, after all.
  116. 8:29:35 PM <Dol|Helen> ||
  117. 8:36:17 PM <•Teller|GM> The destruction becomes less apparent as she approaches the rendezvous point. The buildings here are untouched by Big Bad's power, far away enough from the manor that nobody is searching for injured people here.
  118. 8:36:17 PM <•Teller|GM> Nobody is around. Compared to the contained chaos of earlier, it's fairly quiet here. ||
  119. 8:39:10 PM <Dol|Helen> Helen continues glowing, keeping a weather eye out for any other living things. She could wait here for a little while. 163. 9:38:37 PM <•Teller|GM> The boy suddenly places his fingers in his mouth and whistles. Something stirs in the space between two buildings. 257. 11:32:35 PM <Dol|Helen> "Sure, if you promise not to take a sample," Helen offers, readying herself to cut off her glow. She was probably about to be tied up and forced to give a sample despite her protests, but she could at least hope that wasn't the case. It didn't matter much, she /had/ to help Seachange. 326. 1:25:42 AM <•Teller|GM> His leg is definitely fractured, and there's a large, nasty gash that explains the blood loss. Even in such adverse conditions, she's able to seal the cut and secure the leg as best as she can with the few supplies that she has. At the very least, he'll not be making it worse.
  327. 1:25:42 AM <•Teller|GM> Logan sits in the mud, watching her work with interest. ||
  328. 1:30:59 AM <Dol|Helen> "Alright," Helen says, somewhat satisfied despite the bad conditions of just about everything. "Next we need to see if he has a concussion, but I can't actually look beneath his mask. Logan," she asks, holding out her pen flashlight to him, "would you be willing to check on him while I look the other way?"
  329. 1:30:59 AM <Dol|Helen> "You can blindfold me, if that would help," she adds as an afterthought.
  330. 1:31:00 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  331. 1:32:33 AM <•Teller|GM> "Sure," he says agreeably, squelching over to her side. "How do I know if he has one?" ||
  332. 1:34:09 AM <Dol|Helen> "I'll walk you through it," Helen says, her tone matching his. It was good to be doing medicine again. She pivots in her seat, turning her back to the villainous duo, and starts to offer Logan instructions on concussion diagnostics.

  342. 1:38:26 AM <•Teller|GM> For good measure, he flips her cape over her head and ties the two corners behind her head to form a makeshift blindfold. Her glow lights up the interior of the fabric, which is slightly more pleasant than being left in the dark.
  343. 1:38:26 AM <•Teller|GM> She can't see how well Logan is following her instructions, but he soon reports back. "I don't think he has one. His eyes aren't doing what you said." ||
  344. 1:42:23 AM <Dol|Helen> "Oh, that's good news!" Helen declares, though she doesn't change her position. "A concussion would've been bad, although falling unconscious from lack of blood isn't much better. We should at least get him some drinking water, if we can. He'll need a lot of that."
  345. 1:42:24 AM <Dol|Helen> She waits for a little while, then adds, "Will you be able to find Allele for the blood transfusions? They'll help a lot with his recovery."
  346. 1:42:24 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  347. 1:45:57 AM <•Teller|GM> "I don't know," Logan says sadly. "There was a lot of fighting, and we got split up. She probably came out here, though, if she made it away. This is where we used to live."
  348. 1:45:57 AM <•Teller|GM> "When does he need the blood transfusion? Do you have anything to hold water in? He could just drink some rain water." ||
  349. 1:50:33 AM <Dol|Helen> "As soon as we can get him one," Helen answers honestly, and with some concern. "I have a thermos of coffee, but we'd have to clean it of the coffee before we can use it for water."
  350. 1:50:33 AM <Dol|Helen> The last is said hesitantly. Helen had been awake for awhile now, and just abandoning her coffee seemed like a painful amount of waste. Maybe Logan drank coffee? Kids really shouldn't have caffeine, but they also shouldn't run around nearly naked in a storm. It was good coffee, and a horrible dilemma.
  351. 1:50:33 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  352. 1:54:35 AM <•Teller|GM> "Okay," Logan says. She hears rummaging behind her, and the distinct, painful splash of perfectly good coffee being dumped out onto the ground. "Do you have stuff to do a blood transfusion? I can make someone for you to take blood from." ||
  353. 1:58:29 AM <Dol|Helen> "You can what now?" Helen asks, shocked. They needed blood, and so the solution was for Logan to /make a person/? That seemed way too drastic. Just like pouring out all of her coffee so that Seachange, a supervillain, could drink water.
  354. 1:58:29 AM <Dol|Helen> "No, that's not important right now," Helen says, dismissing all of the points she had raised, both aloud and internally. "I don't have the supplies I would need for a blood transfusion on me, my kit is more geared towards small injuries."
  355. 1:58:34 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  356. 2:00:30 AM <•Teller|GM> "So, he just needs water?" he asks. ||
  357. 2:01:53 AM <Dol|Helen> "It's the best I can do for him now," Helen answers with a small shrug, though she doesn't know if Logan can see the gesture through her cape blindfold.
  358. 2:02:16 AM <Dol|Helen> "He should also be put somewhere dry, and clean."
  359. 2:02:17 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  360. 2:05:25 AM <•Teller|GM> "I don't know anywhere like that," Logan says. "My home was blown down, and I don't know where any of the old spots are. Can't we just stay here? We can try to find my mom in the morning. She'll know what to do." ||
  361. 2:10:14 AM <Dol|Helen> "We should at least try to move him somewhere out of the rain," Helen replies, trying to keep the surprise out of her voice. Logan was Allele's son? Well, that certainly explained a lot of things.
  362. 2:10:14 AM <Dol|Helen> "I don't know if I can stay all night, though," she continues. "Like Seachange said, I'm one of Cassette's, and she'd probably get upset if I didn't come back." Helen tries to ignore that she's currently not in a position where she can easily force the point of her leaving, as that did not seem helpful to ruminate upon.
  363. 2:10:15 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  364. 2:14:57 AM <•Teller|GM> "I don't think I'm supposed to let you go without getting a sample," Logan explains hesitantly. He pauses, presumably to think, then says, "He's wearing his swimsuit. That will keep him dry. It won't be too cold if Goldi lies next to him. She's really warm." ||
  365. 2:17:30 AM <Dol|Helen> "Warm is good," Helen offers, trying to set aside her growing concerns. "I've already told you how I feel about giving a sample. Does that mean you won't let me go back, now that I've helped Seachange?"
  366. 2:17:32 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  367. 2:21:00 AM <•Teller|GM> "Sorry. We tried to tell you to leave us alone, but you wouldn't," Logan says. "You have to stay until I get a sample, or until my mom or Seachange decides what to do with you. I'd get in trouble if I let you go." ||
  368. 2:23:58 AM <Dol|Helen> "I suppose that's fair," Helen muses, unsure of how to get out of the situation. She didn't want to get Logan into trouble with his mother, but that didn't make the other options any more preferable.
  369. 2:23:58 AM <Dol|Helen> "Would you mind if I just told Cassette that I was okay? I'd like to tell her who I'm with, but not where we are, if you're okay with that too."
  370. 2:24:01 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  371. 2:27:36 AM <•Teller|GM> "Um..." Logan says, drawing the sound out. "No. Probably don't do that. Maybe in the morning."
  372. 2:27:36 AM <•Teller|GM> He pauses for a little while longer. "You can take the cape off your head if you want. You should stop glowing again, though, in case anybody is flying around trying to find you." ||
  373. 2:30:56 AM <Dol|Helen> "Could I keep glowing if I hid beneath a tree?" Helen offers, trying to keep at least some semblance of comfort. Staying outside all night in this weather without the protection of her glow did not sound palatable, at all. Not to mention the minor matter of how Cassette was going to take this. They had hugged today, when it was just them at the HQ, and a lot of bonding had happened.
  374. 2:30:56 AM <Dol|Helen> Helen really didn't want to hurt the heroine, but that's exactly what was going to happen if she failed to check in until tomorrow.
  375. 2:30:58 AM <Dol|Helen> ||
  376. 2:33:29 AM <•Teller|GM> "Okay," he agrees. Each answer takes a while, like he's trying as hard as he possibly can not to make a mistake. "But you have to stay there."
  377. 2:33:29 AM <•Teller|GM> "If you're cold, you can lie with Goldi and me and Seachange," he offers. ||
  378. 2:34:51 AM <Dol|Helen> "Okay," Helen replies. She would have to think this over, but it seemed like she would have ample time.
