“I’m on it!” Tails grabbed Sonic by a wrist excitedly. “Just don’t go anywhere. Promise? Promise you won’t go anywhere?”

“Yes! Yes!” he hurriedly said as Tails ducked under the console of the squad car. “What are you doing under there?”

“Upgrades!” Tails called back. “This law vessel has plenty of capacity for raw power, but it needs to be more properly distributed to all the wheels. Hold on to your quills!” Tails popped up, cranked a gizmo he’d plugged into the motor, then Sonic watched the background recede in a blur. Knuckles was there for a moment but seemed to dive off the street in the wake of their hyperboosted descent.

Sonic slid over and took the wheel. He steered them up the winding paths that led into the mountains and out of town. “Now that we’re out of harm’s way for a moment, could you explain how you know so much about me?”
