- Monogatari subtitles batch.
- Info:
- An obvious advantage is that it's another full sub set for BD, besides retail and CGi ordered chapters release.
- And you can use those subs with any video source, most likely out of the box, something that can't be done with CGi subs.
- Also, I fixed a major, for me, problem. For parts of S2 BD, R1/CGi script was the only, and quite poor, option. S2 arcs 4,5 and some Owari eps never got a proper BD release from Commie. Rushjob release used Commie script, but some new BD signs and content were left untranslated. I mainly used edited CGi signs in those cases, and it should be a seamless merging.
- Lastly, I've done various edits. What I mostly did was comparing various translations and modifying the few problematic spots and bad (imo) ideas of Commie——not many in most cases, as it was a script very well done already. And then I decided to work with S1 as well.
- ---------------------------------------------------------
- To briefly mention my sources, it's mostly Commie modified (main font isn't montara either) except:
- Bake subs modified by anon (remodified) -- Nise (see note) -- Hana (CGi modified) -- Kizu 3 (EDO modified) --
- Koyomi (Sajamba modified, see note) and Owari 2 (CR modified).
- Names, catchphrases etc. everywhere should be consistent. I even made consistent Bake 11 flashback with Neko Kuro. I hope you like the catchphrases I chose (I do) but if not, Find and Replace isn't a big deal and a short work if you ask me. If you want Oshino to say "nice" instead of "good" though... No don't do it. It's a horrible mistake. It's all good.
- Also somewhat toned-down Yozuru's accent in Tsuki for better readability.
- Obviously those edits and choices 100% reflect my personal taste, and this is not the usual release. This is just my pet project and I ended up putting considerable effort into it. I just decided to share because there's a lack of alternatives and some may want this.
- And I wanna thank everyone who worked on Monogatari subs. At one point or another, I used almost every release as reference or base. Commie, CGi, UTW, R1, EDO, Tactical, BudLightSubs, Sajamba et al.

- Apologies for the multiparter for S1, Kitsunekko limitation somewhere below 20MB.
- *****NOTES:
- About Nise: This was a hard one for various reasons. Not one version was complete or great. I used all 3 releases (UTW/Commie/CMS). They were all fairly similar CR variants, so consistency and tone isn't an issue. Basically, since every release was flawed, I picked best option for each ep. UTW had solid edits and kfx but it's incomplete (1-3). CMS > great signs, KFX for 4-11 and best script for eps 6/7, but very poor line breaks, only 480p sub res and buggy AF implementation. Commie > Better line breaks and script than CMS, but not in some eps, esp. for signs.
- I actually decided to edit Nise at the very end, and I know that the way I handled a variety of sources, and how I kept honorifics selectively, might seem bold or strange to some. Still knowing the quality of releases for Nise, even those who don't like such ideas should probably bite the bullet and stick with my version XD As I said I actually decided to edit Nise at the very end.
- Known (not) issues
- 1. I said CMS has very poor line breaks, but that doesn't mean that UTW and Commie have great ones. More or less every release suffers from this, all used the same CR script after all. I fixed many bad cases to improve readability, but I know it's not flawless. It'd require major and lengthy retimes. Still it's the best available option. And on the bright side, script is good.
- 2. Honorifics: Actually, for me, Nise is the only Monogatari where retention of honorifics isn't a bad idea. Still in the end, I decided to remove them for consistency. However there are 2 gags based on honorifics (and 1 in Owari btw). I didn't want to scrap the jokes, so I kept the relevant honorifics for those 2 short scenes in eps 4/6. I'm talking about 7-8 honorifics, and it's very easy to edit them out, not recommended though.
- 3. I decided not to make KFX consistent as I liked more than one variant and wanted to preserve them. So 1-3 OPs are UTW, 4-11 CMS. EDs are whatever source had.
- 4. The way CMS handled subs is extremely buggy and problematic. Also be warned: if you edit ANY line using aegisub in eps 6/7/10/11, there's a good chance it'll cause some signs not to appear. Sometimes they'll break, sometimes not. If I had to edit anything, I'd use notepad for those eps. And btw reason I upscaled to 720p is that if you upscale CMS to 1080p, {\blur} values skyrocket needing idk how many hrs to fix.
- 5. I usually prefer stutters, but I left a "bit my tongue" in there, I know. Most likely, she doesn't mind, she's probably lying and I don't trust her. if you do mind just edit it XD
- ---------------
- About Koyomimonogatari and Owari 2:
- For the last 2 it was a fast job, and mostly best effort, as there weren't alternate translations to work with.
- I didn't correct minor and unimportant errors in Koyo, but still it's more than watchable in my book.
- I consider it more like a bonus feature tbh, so I don't mind subtitle quality that much.
- As for Owari 2, script wasn't bad but subs themselves were poor. I fixed many terrible line breaks and some really bad timing choices that killed readability and made an above average script look bad. And consistency edits, catchphrases names etc. It's not perfect, but it's just a placeholder TV release and good enough for me. I'll probably revisit Owari 2 if needed, when additional translations and BD sources are available.
- --------------------
- Yes my recommendation is to watch Kizu right after Bake. https://www.reddit.com/r/araragi/comments/6qrjbp/when_to_watch_kizu/
- Actually I'd rewatch Hana and Kizu after Owari 2 as well.
- --------------------
- No, I wanted to keep Bake and Kizu styling distinctive. They shouldn't be consistent with the rest of the series, for various reasons.
