  27. Changes from version 2.0
  28. ========================
  29. The following issues have been addressed in this release:
  30.
  31. * Black Vise and The Rack no longer do double damage.
  32.
  33. * Cards such as Zombie Master no longer give their effect
  34. when only in the spell chain.
  35.
  36. * Kismet properly lets you target either player.
  37.
  38. * Several artifacts with continuous effects disable when
  39. tapped. These include Howling Mine, Soul Net and others.
  40.
  41. * Fast effects response is no longer allowed for the
  42. activation of Black Lotus.
  43.
  44. * City of Brass no longer orphans its one point of damage
  45. upon activation.
  46.
  47. * Contract from Below allows user to select order in which
  48. cards in hand are discarded.
  49.
  50. * Fastbond properly handles more than one Fastbond in play.
  51. Fastbond also now recognizes lands being put into play
  52. by means other than being placed from the hand (Untamed
  53. Wilds).
  54.
  55. * Nevinyral's Disk no longer taps if you cancel activation.
  56.
  57. * Argothian Pixies/Treefolk are no longer immune to some
  58. instances of direct damage.
  59.
  60. * Disenchanting an Animate Artifact which was cast on an
  61. artifact creature no longer removes the creature state
  62. from the artifact creature.
  63.
  64. * Farmstead now recognizes additional cost imposed by Gloom.
  65.
  66. * Serendib Djinn is correctly now a flying creature.
  67.
  68.
  69. Important Customer Support Note
  70. ===============================
  71. Do NOT call Wizards of the Coast Customer Service with questions,
  72. problems, or other issues related to this computer game; contact
  73. MicroProse Customer Support. The WotC folks will happily address
  74. card issues, as always, but they will not help you with issues
  75. specific to the computer game.
  76.

  78. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
  79. ================================
  80. For further help for Magic: The Gathering, please read the Magic
  81. FAQ included at the end of this file. The FAQ includes help for
  82. installation, sound cards, video cards, graphics, gameplay,
  83. Shandalar and specific cards.
  84.
  85.
  86. New Features
  87. ============
  88.
  89. The Duel and Gauntlet
  90. ---------------------
  91. * When you save a duel during a Gauntlet, you save the status
  92. of that current duel, and your progress through the Gauntlet.
  93.
  94. * The "Spells of the Ancients" installer backs up all of your
  95. deck files for Shandalar and the duel. The old Shandalar decks
  96. are copied to a new folder called 'old deck'. The old duel decks
  97. (including any decks you may have built in the Deck Builder) will
  98. be copied to a folder called 'old playdeck'.
  99.
  100. Dueling Table
  101. -------------
  102. A few reminders of often overlooked features:
  103.
  104. * If you do not put a Stop (the red marker) on a phase, play will
  105. bypass that phase without bothering to ask you if you want to
  106. use optional effects (a Brass Man's untap or Land Tax, for
  107. example). This is a handy way to prevent the duel from bogging
  108. down, but if you are not careful, you could accidentally miss
  109. an opportunity. Thus, if you plan to use an optional effect
  110. (especially during the upkeep phase), make sure to Run To (by
  111. clicking on the phase bar) or put a Stop on the phase you have
  112. in mind.
  113.
  114. * Remember that creatures with negative power are treated as having
  115. a power of 0 for all purposes except raising the power. Thus,
  116. they are displayed during a duel as having 0 power.
  117.
  118. * Remember that all of the floating windows -- including the Ante
  119. and Mulligan displays, both hands, and the Situation Bar (but not
  120. the Spell Chain and Combat windows) -- are movable. Just click
  121. and drag them out of the way when necessary.
  122.
  123. * You can minimize both the Spell Chain and Combat windows. Just
  124. click anywhere on the title bar of the window to do so. To
  125. restore the Spell Chain window to full size, click on the star
  126. icon on the phase bar. To restore the Combat window to full size,
  127. click on the sword icon on the phase bar.
  128.
  129. * Hold the mouse over a particular thing (a card, part of the
  130. dueling table, or an ability marker, for instance) to find out
  131. what it is.
  132.
  133. * Right-click on things for a mini-menu of useful functions.
  134.
  135. * Click on things to use them. Double-click to auto-use; that is, to
  136. have mana drawn from lands automatically (and indiscriminately).
  137.
  138. Deck Builder
  139. ------------
  140. * Moving multiple copies of a card into and out of your deck can
  141. be a pain. Instead of moving one copy at a time, now you can move
  142. as many as you need, all in one step. Hold down the Shift key
  143. and double-click on the card. Enter the number you want moved.
  144.
  145. * You can now right-click on the area in between the sets of Filter
  146. Buttons to open a mini-menu. This menu has only one option: the
  147. Main Buttons toggle. If you choose to toggle the Main Menu Buttons
  148. On, all of the filters EXCEPT the Other Filters become active (are
  149. turned on). If you toggle Main Menu Buttons Off, all of the Set
  150. Filters, Color Filters, and Type Filters are inactivated (switched
  151. off).
  152.
  153. * When you're editing your deck in Shandalar or in the Sealed Deck
  154. tournament, you can also right-click on the background area behind
  155. the cards in your deck to get another mini-menu. This one has two
  156. options that let you to move cards according to their color. Use
  157. Move By Color Into Deck to put all the cards of the colors you
  158. choose from the inventory into the current deck, and Move By Color
  159. Out Of Deck to move cards from your deck into your inventory.
  160. You're prompted to choose which of the five colors, plus "artifacts"
  161. (not "colorless"), you want moved. Note that the basic lands that
  162. correspond to the colors you choose also move. (No lands move with
  163. artifacts, and you must move dual and special lands individually.)
  164.
  165. * The Deck Builder considers basic lands as having the same color
  166. as the color of mana they produce for the purpose of deck stats.
  167. (For example, 5 Islands count as 5 Blue cards.)
  168.
  169.
  170. Card Notes
  171. ==========
  172. * A display issue: The name of artist Brian Snoddy should always
  173. have a line over the 'o'. (Sorry, Brian.)
  174.
  175. * In some places in the game, the name of El-Hajjaj is displayed
  176. incorrectly. There should always be an accent circumflex (caret)
  177. over the final 'a'.
  178.
  179.
  180. Tutorial Errata
  181. ===============
  182. * Any time one of the wizards in the Tutorial mentions "points," he
  183. or she is being informal. There are actually no "points" in the
  184. game of Magic: The Gathering. Thus:
  185.
  186. - In Chapters 4, 6, 8, 9 and anywhere else, when the wizards refer
  187. to "points of damage," they mean simply "damage."
  188.
  189. - In Chapter 4 (and anywhere else), when they speak of "points of
  190. mana," they really mean "mana."
  191.
  192. - In Chapter 8, one of them says, "...the ogre does two points
  193. against the knight's two points of toughness." That should be
  194. "...the ogre does two damage against the knight's two toughness."
  195.
  196. - In Chapters 4 and 7, the wizards talk of "life points." They
  197. mean "life total."
  198.
  199. * In Chapter 7, the wizard mentions the "Heal Phase." Obviously,
  200. his information is out-of-date. Under the 5th Edition rules, the
  201. Heal Phase no longer exists. It has been replaced by the Cleanup
  202. Phase.
  203.
  204. * In Chapter 8, the wizard says, "...other special powers include
  205. regeneration, flight, and many more..." He means "...regeneration,
  206. FLYING, and many more."
  207.
  208.
  209. IBM ThinkPad Compatibility
  210. --------------------------
  211. * Those of you installing this game on a ThinkPad might experience a
  212. problem when viewing the Tutorial videos. This is caused by the
  213. video software attempting to use an incorrect driver. We've included
  214. a program on the Original Magic: the Gathering CD-ROM that corrects
  215. this problem.
  216.
  217. Run this file:
  218.
  219. autoplay\setindeo.exe
  220.
  221. and the Tutorial should work just fine.
  222.
  223.
  224. Technical Notes
  225. ===============
  226. * Don't forget to take a look at the Magic FAQ (MAGICFAQ.TXT) on the
  227. program disc for further help with troubleshooting any problems.
  228.
  229. * If you normally use a screen saver, you should be aware that it is
  230. always running in the background. To prevent interference with the
  231. game, you must disable any screen saver before you start playing.
  232.
  233. * Some players might experience compatibility problems. Our tests
  234. lead us to believe that the most common cause of these problems
  235. is not the game itself, but out-of-date device drivers installed
  236. on the computer. If you experience compatibility problems, please
  237. make sure that you are using the most recent drivers provided for
  238. your hardware. If you have the correct drivers and the problem
  239. persists, call Customer Support.
  240.
  241. * If you experience problems with any part of this game after you
  242. install new hardware or software, you might have updated a sound
  243. driver, video driver, DirectX driver or Indeo Video driver to a
  244. version that is not compatible with the game. To fix this, you can
  245. reinstall the DirectX drivers from the Magic: The Gathering CD-ROM.
  246.
  247. * We stongly suggest that you play this game in High Color (16-bit)
  248. video mode or better. If you are playing in a lesser mode (that is,
  249. you are using 256 colors or less), you might experience transitory
  250. graphic oddities. These are superficial and should not have any
  251. lasting effect on the game. Some machines that are below the
  252. recomended system requirements may experience problems with High
  253. Color (16-bit) video modes when playing in Shandalar.
  254.
  255. * This game is designed to work with the standard issue Windows 95.
  256. We do NOT support ANY of the beta upgrades to Windows 95.
  257.
  258. * If you experience problems with flickering video in Shandalar, it's
  259. likely you need to update your video drivers. Most vendors now
  260. supply Windows 95 versions of their video drivers. You can normally
  261. download these drivers from the vendor's BBS or Web site.
  262.
  263. * If you do not hear the sound effects in the game, you might not
  264. have selected to install the DirectX drivers. Rerun the install
  265. program, but do not select ANY game components to install. Allow
  266. the new DirectX drivers to be installed.
  267.
  268. * If you have the new Sound Blaster 16/AWE-32 driver for Windows 95
  269. (Revision 7), you may experience problems running this game. The
  270. new Sound Blaster driver updates the Audio Drive Component to
  271. version 4.33.00.0012. This version causes the game to crash
  272. with a fatal exception error in VXD VMM(01) and terminates the
  273. application. Reinstall the DirectX drivers (as in the previous
  274. paragraph). The DirectX Audio Drive Component is version
  275. 4.31.00.0068, which functions correctly. Creative Labs also
  276. has a new driver, version 4.33.00.0014, which does not cause
  277. the problem.
  278.
  279. * If you try to manually delete this game using Windows Explorer,
  280. you might experience problems. (We suggest you ALWAYS use the
  281. Uninstall feature instead.) When you run the game, some game files
  282. temporarily become part of the Windows 95 system resources. These
  283. files cannot be used or deleted if they are currently being used
  284. by your system. If you experience this type of problem, you can
  285. reboot your computer to free the affected files. You should then be
  286. able to delete the files.
  287.
  288. * The Uninstall feature removes only those files installed by the
  289. Install Shield program. Any files created by the game, such as
  290. saved games, will be left on the system after you run uninstall.
  291. If you Uninstall "Spells of the Ancients" you must also Uninstall
  292. your Original Magic: the Gathering product. Some common files used
  293. by both applications are removed by the "Spells of the Ancients"
  294. Uninstaller. Please re-install the Original product before trying
  295. to re-install "Spells of the Ancients".

  351. General
  352. =======
  353. Q: What is the latest version of Magic: The Gathering?
  354.
  355. A: Version 2.1 is the latest version of the game. This version
  356. is the update for the "Spells of the Ancients" expansion
  357. pack for the original Magic the Gathering.
  358.
  359. Q: Is Magic: The Gathering compatible with Windows 3.1,
  360. Windows 3.11 or Windows NT?
  361.
  362. A: Unfortunately, because the program uses Microsoft's DirectX
  363. version 3.0, it does not work properly with any operating
  364. system except Windows 95.
  365.
  366. Installation
  367. ============
  368. Q: I have the demo for Magic: The Gathering installed. Will
  369. this cause any problems when I install the complete game?
  370.
  371. A: We recommend that you either delete the demo directory or
  372. rename it before installing the complete game. By default,
  373. the complete game uses the same directory name (\MAGIC)
  374. that the demo uses.
  375.
  376. Q: While installing the game, my CD-ROM cannot be verified by
  377. the installer.
  378.
  379. A: If you have more than one CD-ROM drive attached to your system,
  380. you must place the CD in the drive that appears first in the drive
  381. list. For example, if you have two CD-ROM drives that are lettered
  382. D: and E:, you must place the disc into drive D for verification.
  383. The second drive (in this case E:) will not be checked.
  384.
  385. Q: While installing the game, I got an error message of
  386. "Assertion error, cannot open sprite file." I am using
  387. Corel CD-ROM drivers.
  388.
  389. A: Unfortunately, the installer is not compatible with Corel
  390. CD-ROM drivers. You must load Windows 95 drivers for your
  391. CD-ROM drive.
  392.
  393. Q: I got an error while uninstalling or reinstalling the game
  394. that says there is a file that is write-protected or otherwise
  395. cannot be deleted.
  396.
  397. A: Just reboot your computer and try again. Sometimes Windows 95
  398. thinks one of the files is write-protected until the computer
  399. is rebooted.
  400.
  401. Troubleshooting
  402. ===============
  403. Q: I am experiencing DLL errors, assert errors or lockups.
  404.
  405. A: Do not run any other programs (such as Norton Crash Protector)
  406. in the background. The only programs that should be loaded are
  407. Magic: The Gathering and absolutely necessary Windows 95 programs.
  408.
  409. In addition, make sure that your hard drive has at least 30MB
  410. free for the Windows 95 swap file.
  411.
  412. Make sure that you have the latest versions of the DirectX
  413. drivers for your hardware. In particular, make sure that your
  414. sound card has the latest DirectSound drivers.
  415.
  416. Check your sound card to see if it is properly installed and
  417. functioning. You can check your sound card by selecting "System"
  418. from the Control Panel. Select the Device Manager tab at the System
  419. Properties dialog box. Double-click on "Sound, Video and Game
  420. Controllers." A description for your sound card should appear
  421. underneath. Double-click on this text to bring up a dialog box
  422. telling you if your sound card is functioning correctly or not.
  423.
  424. You can also try turning down the graphics acceleration by
  425. selecting the System control panel and clicking on the Performance
  426. tab. Then click on the "Graphics" button and slide the bar to the
  427. left in order to adjust the degree of hardware acceleration. We
  428. recommend lowering the graphics acceleration to "Most accelerator
  429. functions." If that doesn't help, try "Basic accelerator functions."
  430.
  431. Q: The game is locking up when I try to load a saved game, or I am
  432. experiencing "Page fault" errors.
  433.
  434. A: Magic: The Gathering requires at least 30MB of virtual memory.
  435. Please check your virtual memory by selecting the System control
  436. panel. Then click on the Performance tab and click the "Virtual
  437. Memory" button.
  438.
  439. Q: I am receiving an error message of "Error vids:iv41 decompression."
  440.
  441. A: This error is caused by the Indeo video drivers. Please run the
  442. SETINDEO.EXE program by inserting your Original Magic CD-ROM, changing
  443. to your CD-ROM drive and typing "\autoplay\setindeo" [Enter] at the
  444. DOS prompt. You need to restart your computer for this change to
  445. take effect. If you continue to experience this error message,
  446. please download the version of Video for Windows from Intel's Web
  447. site at www.intel.com.
  448.
  449. Q: I am having problems with "Assertion failed" or "Add card" error
  450. messages while playing in Shandalar.
  451.
  452. A: This problem has been mostly eliminated in this version of the game.
  453. If your graphics resolution is set to something higher than
  454. 1024 x 768, please try lowering it to 1024 x 768. If that doesn't
  455. work, please try lowering it to 800 x 600.
  456.
  457. Q: When I try to run the game, the system crashes with an error message
  458. about MSVFW32.DLL.
  459.
  460. A: You need to install Video for Windows. To do this, you must go to
  461. the Control Panel and double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
  462. Click on the Windows Setup tab at the top. Click to put a check mark
  463. in the Multimedia component. Then click the "Apply" button to
  464. install these components. You will probably need to have your
  465. Windows 95 CD-ROM or disks handy.
  466.
  467. Q: The game crashes when I get to the Wizard Statistics screen (showing
  468. the five major wizards) or when the coin flip animation starts.
  469.
  470. A: We recommend downloading the latest version of the Indeo video
  471. drivers from Intel from their Web site at www.intel.com.
  472.
  473. You can also try turning down the graphics acceleration by selecting
  474. the System control panel and clicking on the Performance tab. Then
  475. click on the "Graphics" button and slide the bar to the left in
  476. order to adjust the degree of hardware acceleration. We recommend
  477. lowering the graphics acceleration to "Most accelerator functions."
  478. If that doesn't help, try "Basic accelerator functions."
  479.
  480. Q: Sometimes the game quits back to Windows unexpectedly.
  481.
  482. A: Applications running in the background may cause the game to close
  483. without notice. Please shut down all other applications before
  484. running Magic: The Gathering.
  485.
  486. Sound
  487. =====
  488. Q: I don't have a Windows 95-compatible sound card, and the game
  489. crashes on me.
  490.
  491. A: You can play Magic: The Gathering without a sound card if you have
  492. version 1.1 or greater. Unfortunately, version 1.0 requires a Windows 95-
  493. compatible sound card. Without one, the game will crash in certain
  494. parts of the game (usually when you try to duel in Shandalar).
  495.
  496. Q: I am having problems with the sound in Magic: The Gathering.
  497.
  498. A: Please note that the game requires DirectX version 3.0 or greater
  499. working in order to hear the sound and music. If you are not hearing
  500. any sound, the problem is most likely caused by a problem with DirectX not
  501. working with your sound card. Please contact your sound card
  502. manufacturer for the latest drivers that are compatible with
  503. DirectX.
  504.
  505. Q: I am hearing white noise when I play a duel.
  506.
  507. A: You may have an older version of the drivers for your sound card.
  508. Please contact your sound card manufacturer to obtain the latest
  509. DirectX-compatible drivers.
  510.
  511. Q: I am experiencing glitches in the game due to the sound repeating.
  512.
  513. A: Please try first uninstalling the game and then reinstalling the
  514. game using the full custom install. This will sometimes take care
  515. of the problem.
  516.
  517. Q: I'm having problems with sound in duels.
  518.
  519. A: Try renaming the folder "DuelSounds" in the MAGIC\PROGRAM directory
  520. to something else. You will no longer hear any sounds in the duel.
  521.
  522. Q: I am having some problems with sound in the game.
  523.
  524. A: If you have a Sound Blaster AWE32 card, please download the latest
  525. drivers from the Creative Labs Web site at www.creaf.com or contact
  526. them directly for the latest version of their Windows 95-compliant
  527. sound card drivers.
  528.
  529. If you have an Ensoniq ViVo sound card, please download the latest
  530. drivers that should fix this problem from Ensoniq's Web site at
  531. www.ensoniq.com or contact them directly for the latest version of
  532. their Windows 95-compliant sound card drivers. You can also try
  533. downloading the Ensoniq Soundscape ViVo driver installer from
  534. Gateway which is called "Soundscape InstallWizard for Windows 95
  535. version 1.00.09" (SSIWIZ.EXE dated 2/97). This installer is
  536. supposed to make sure your Ensoniq sound drivers are up-to-date
  537. and correctly installed.
  538.
  539. If you have a Packard Bell computer with an Aztech Sound Galaxy
  540. Washington 16 sound card, please download the latest drivers that
  541. should fix this problem from Aztech's Web site at www.aztechca.com
  542. or contact them directly for the latest version of their Windows
  543. 95-compliant sound card drivers.
  544.
  545. Q: I have an IBM Aptiva with an MWave sound card. Every time I run into
  546. a creature in Shandalar, the game crashes.
  547.
  548. A: Unfortunately, the MWave sound card is a proprietary sound card that
  549. is not explicitly supported by Microsoft's DirectX technology.
  550. Please contact the manufacturer of your sound card or Microsoft
  551. for details.
  552.
  553. Graphics
  554. ========
  555. Q: I am having video glitches or seeing graphic anomalies.
  556.
  557. A: Please try changing your display resolution to either a lower
  558. resolution (such as 640 x 480) or higher resolution (such as
  559. 1024 x 768).
  560.
  561. If at all possible, we recommend running the game in High Color
  562. graphics (16-bit color).
  563.
  564. You can also try turning down the graphics acceleration by selecting
  565. the System control panel and clicking on the Performance tab. Then
  566. click on the "Graphics" button and slide the bar to the left in
  567. order to adjust the degree of hardware acceleration. We recommend
  568. lowering the graphics acceleration to "Most accelerator functions."
  569. If that doesn't help, try "Basic accelerator functions."
  570.
  571. In addition, make sure that you do not have any other programs (such
  572. as Norton Crash Protector) running in the background.
  573.
  574. Q: When I run the game, the screen turns black but I can still move my
  575. mouse.
  576.
  577. A: If you are running in 256-color mode, we recommend switching the
  578. graphics to 16-bit or 24-bit mode.
  579.
  580. Q: Sometimes when I exit Magic: The Gathering, the colors on my Windows
  581. desktop are messed up.
  582.
  583. A: Unfortunately, running Magic: The Gathering in only 256 colors will
  584. sometimes cause this problem with the color palette. If at all
  585. possible, please switch to High Color graphics (16-bit color).
  586.
  587. Q: I am having problems with the game returning to Windows
  588. unexpectedly.
  589.
  590. A: This problem may be caused by graphics hardware acceleration. Please
  591. try reducing the graphics acceleration hardware by selecting the
  592. System control panel. Then click on the Performance tab and click
  593. the "Graphics" button. Slide the bar to the left to lower the
  594. graphics acceleration. We recommend lowering the graphics
  595. acceleration to "Most accelerator functions." If that doesn't
  596. help, try "Basic accelerator functions."
  597.
  598. Q: I am having some problems with my video card in this game.
  599.
  600. A: If you have an ATI Mach 64 video card, please download the latest
  601. video drivers from the ATI Web site at www.atitech.ca or contact ATI
  602. directly for the latest version of their Windows 95-compliant
  603. drivers.
  604.
  605. If you have a Diamond Stealth 3D video card, please download the
  606. latest video drivers from the Diamond Web site at www.diamondmm.com
  607. or contact Diamond directly for the latest version of their Windows
  608. 95-compliant drivers.
  609.
  610. If you have a Chips and Technology video card, please download the
  611. latest video drivers from the Chips and Technology Web site at
  612. www.chips.com or contact Chips and Technology directly for the
  613. latest version of their Windows 95-compliant drivers.
  614.
  615. If you have a Matrox Millennium video card, please download the
  616. latest BIOS update from the Matrox Web site at www.matrox.com or
  617. contact Matrox directly for the latest version of their Windows
  618. 95-compliant drivers. This BIOS update fixes many DirectX-related
  619. issues.
  620.
  621. Q: When the coin flip animation starts, the colors become corrupted.
  622.
  623. A: Magic: The Gathering is designed to work in higher color depth video
  624. modes. The problem is due to running the game in 256 colors. If at
  625. all possible, we recommend running the game in 16-bit or 24-bit
  626. color mode.
  627.
  628. Q: Sometimes I get the error message "Video not available, cannot find
  629. decompressor."
  630.
  631. A: Go to the Control Panel and double-click the "Add/Remove Programs"
  632. icon. Click on the Windows Setup tab at the top. Select the
  633. Multimedia component and click the "Details" button. Scroll down
  634. the list and click to put a check mark in the box next to "Video
  635. Compression." Click the OK button. Finally, click the OK button
  636. again. You will probably need to have your Windows 95 CD-ROM or
  637. disks handy.
  638.
  639. Q: When I play a game in Shandalar, I am having various problems
  640. including with graphics (particularly fonts). For example, text is
  641. appearing outside their boxes and I am getting invalid page faults.
  642.
  643. A: The problem is caused by a font conflict. To check for font
  644. conflicts, double-click the Fonts control panel. Delete any font
  645. that shows a file size of 0K (zero kilobytes). You may also want to
  646. copy all the fonts from your MAGIC\PROGRAM folder (TTxxxx.TTF) into
  647. your WINDOWS\FONTS folder.
  648.
  649. Gameplay
  650. ========
  651. Q: Will you add multiplayer support to the game?
  652.
  653. A: Yes, our goal is to add multiplayer support to Magic: The Gathering
  654. by the end of this year. We are exploring various options as to the
  655. exact specifics.
  656.
  657. Q: The computer AI is making strange or seemingly stupid decisions in
  658. how it plays its cards.
  659.
  660. A: The computer deliberately makes some mistakes at the easier levels
  661. of the game in order to give beginning Magic players a fighting
  662. chance. If you feel these AI decisions are annoying, please try
  663. increasing the difficulty level.
  664.
  665. The Duel
  666. ========
  667. Q: The game isn't stopping at my upkeep phase. Therefore, I can't do
  668. optional upkeep effects such as paying to untap my Brass Man or
  669. paying to untap my Paralyzed creature.
  670.
  671. A: You must put a Stop marker on your upkeep phase for the program to
  672. stop there. Otherwise, the game will only stop at your upkeep phase
  673. for mandatory effects (such as a creature getting a counter for
  674. Unstable Mutation or taking damage for Cursed Land). To put a Stop
  675. marker on any phase, right-click on the Phase Bar at the phase that
  676. you want the game to stop at and select "Mark this phase to always
  677. stop" from the pop-up menu. This will mark the Phase Bar with a red
  678. dot which means that the program will stop there if you have a
  679. valid action. For example, if you want to use a Land Tax or pay
  680. to untap your Brass Man, put a Stop marker on the upkeep phase.
  681. Please refer to pages 116-118 of the manual for more information.
  682.
  683. Q: When I double-click a card to cast it, it's tapping some lands that
  684. I don't want to tap.
  685.
  686. A: You can instead single-click on a card in your hand to cast it. If
  687. you single-click, you'll be prompted to click on your mana sources
  688. manually. Or you can right-click the lands that you don't want to
  689. be automatically tapped and choose "Don't auto tap this card" from
  690. the mini-menu.
  691.
  692. Q: I clicked on the title bar of the Spell Chain Window, and it
  693. disappeared. How can I get it back?
  694.
  695. A: Just click on the staff icon that's between the two phase bars to
  696. make the Spell Chain Window reappear.
  697.
  698. Q: I clicked on the title bar of the Combat Window, and it disappeared.
  699. How can I get it back?
  700.
  701. A: Just click on the sword icon that's between the two phase bars to
  702. make the Combat Window reappear (see page 126 of the manual).
  703.
  704. Q: I have more than four creatures in combat, but I can't see beyond
  705. the first four in the Combat Window.
  706.
  707. A: To scroll the Combat Window, just click on the little white mouse
  708. (that's between your creatures and your opponent's). Drag the mouse
  709. icon to scroll the Combat Windows so you can see the creatures on
  710. the right-hand side.
  711.
  712. Q: When I bring up the Duel, the program isn't listing any decks in
  713. the opening dialog box.
  714.
  715. A: When you install the game, the directory name must be no longer
  716. than eight (8) characters. Exit the game and rename the directory
  717. in Windows 95 to fix this problem. This problem has been fixed in
  718. version 1.1 of the game.
  719.
  720. Shandalar
  721. =========
  722. Q: I am just starting in Shandalar and am getting beaten up on a
  723. regular basis by all those creatures that keep attacking me. What
  724. can I do?
  725.
  726. A: One of your first steps should be to run to the nearest village or
  727. city as fast as possible so you can edit your starting deck. You
  728. want to edit your deck to the best cards possible while remembering
  729. the minimum deck size depending on your difficulty level (30 cards
  730. for Apprentice, 35 for Magician, 40 for both Sorcerer and Wizard).
  731. If at all possible, reduce the number of colors in your deck to two
  732. or at the most three.
  733.
  734. Next, pick your battles wisely. As the manual says on page 41, the
  735. weakest creatures are those that walk. The next hardest are those
  736. that are mounted, and the toughest are those look like dragons or
  737. other flying creatures.
  738.
  739. Try to run away from the more powerful creatures until you build up
  740. a stronger deck. You can run away by moving to a terrain type that
  741. the creature can't follow you onto. Each creature sticks to the
  742. terrain type corresponding to its color (for example, red creatures
  743. stay near mountains). Of course, some creatures are multicolored
  744. and can survive on two different terrain types. Once you cross a
  745. terrain boundary, the creature will be unable to follow you.
  746.
  747. Stay on the roads if at all possible. You will move much faster if
  748. you walk on roads and can many times outrun the other creatures.
  749.
  750. Don't forget that you can bribe many creatures. Discretion is
  751. sometimes the better part of valor, and if you can afford the gold,
  752. it's probably better than losing a card from your deck in ante.
  753.
  754. As your deck becomes stronger and you beat more creatures, you'll
  755. notice that the weaker ones will start running away from you! In
  756. addition, you don't have to face as many creatures in version 1.1
  757. of the game.
  758.
  759. Q: When I defeat one of the creatures, I see an animation of the
  760. five major wizards. What do all those things represent?
  761.
  762. A: As noted on page 32 of the manual, each skull represents a victory
  763. by you against one of that wizard's creatures. The wizards' staffs
  764. represent their total life points. Each red dot represents one
  765. fewer life point for that wizard. (You can only knock them down
  766. by 10 points, though, to a minimum of 20 life.) The tiny floating
  767. spheres represent mana taps (see page 46 of the manual). You will
  768. lose the battle to save Shandalar if any one wizard accumulates
  769. enough mana taps to be able to cast the Spell of Dominion.
  770.
  771. Q: Every time I receive a notice that a wizard is attacking a
  772. particular town, I don't arrive in time to save it.
  773.
  774. A: If a wizard gains control of a city, it will be converted into
  775. a mana dome. You can still battle the wizard there to free it.
  776. You will not regain your mana link, however, if you had one
  777. there before.
  778.
  779. Q: My character keeps moving when I'm walking in the main map of
  780. Shandalar even after I stop pressing a directional key.
  781.
  782. A: You can stop your character in two different ways: either press the
  783. Spacebar or click on your character's head with the mouse.
  784.
  785. Q: Can I speed up movement while walking around on the main map?
  786.
  787. A: Try pressing Shift-U. This may improve performance on slower
  788. computer systems.
  789.
  790. Q: At the Status screen, my Record vs. the Creatures of Shandalar isn't
  791. keeping track of all the creatures I have won against in Shandalar.
  792.
  793. A: Only creatures you encounter in the main map count toward your
  794. Win/Loss record. Creatures you vanquish in dungeons and castles
  795. do not count.
  796.
  797. Q: Is there any way I can load a saved game from within Shandalar
  798. without having to quit the game first?
  799.
  800. A: If you update to version 1.1 of the game, you can right-click to
  801. bring up a mini-menu with options to save, load, quit, etc.
  802.
  803.
  804. Decks in Shandalar
  805. ------------------
  806. Q: I'm building a deck in Shandalar but there seem to be limits on how
  807. many duplicates of one card I can put into my deck.
  808.
  809. A: The number of duplicate cards allowed in your Shandalar deck
  810. depends on the total size of your deck and whether you have the
  811. Tome of Enlightenment (one of the World Magics). If you don't
  812. have the Tome of Enlightenment, you can only have one card if
  813. your deck has 19 or fewer cards, 2 duplicate cards if your deck
  814. has 20 to 39 cards, 3 duplicates if your deck has 40 to 59
  815. cards, or 4 duplicates if your deck is over 60 cards.
  816.
  817. Q: Even though I've edited my deck and know exactly which cards
  818. are in it, I keep getting random land.
  819.
  820. A: If your deck does not have the minimum number of cards in it,
  821. random basic lands will be temporarily added to your library
  822. (after the ante but before the shuffle). Your deck must have
  823. 30 cards at Apprentice level, 35 at Magician level, or 40 at
  824. both Sorcerer and Wizard level.
  825.
  826. Q: Every time I try to look at my deck or edit my deck in Shandalar,
  827. the game crashes.
  828.
  829. A: The game will now notify you when you approach the 500 card limit
  830. and advise you to sell some cards.
  831.
  832. The Cards
  833. =========
  834. Q: How can I use my Mishra's Factory to attack or block?
  835.
  836. A: You must turn your Mishra's Factory into an Assembly Worker before
  837. you try to attack since no fast effects are possible between
  838. declaring an attack and declaring attackers. If you wish to
  839. attack with your Mishra's Factory, in your Main phase (precombat),
  840. single-click the card and choose "Change to Assembly Worker." Pay
  841. the 1 colorless mana and your Mishra's Factory will then turn
  842. into an Assembly Worker (a 2/2 artifact creature). As long as
  843. your Assembly Worker is not suffering from summoning sickness,
  844. you can attack with it by clicking the Combat phase on the Phase
  845. Bar. When prompted to "Choose attackers," click on the Assembly
  846. Worker card.
  847.
  848. You can also use your Assembly Worker to block the computer's
  849. creatures. Just turn your Mishra's Factory into an Assembly Worker
  850. in the "Attacker fast effects phase."
  851.
  852. Q: Why does Naf's Asp continue to damage me turn after turn?
  853.
  854. A: According to the latest rulings by Wizards of the Coast for the
  855. Naf's Asp, you must pay to get rid of the Naf's Asp legacy to avoid
  856. further damage. Otherwise, you will continue to take damage turn
  857. after turn.
