- - listen to a conversation in which a student gives their opinion about the change
- - hear and read the prompt
- - 30 seconds to prepare your response
- - 60 seconds to speak
- ---
- DELTA p. 291 - take 45 seconds to read the announcement
- What is the announcement about?
- What is the woman’s opinion?
- - Campus childcare isn’t good enough.
- What reasons does she give for this opinion?
- - Space: Only space for 20 children and long waits to get children enrolled. (They should add more space.)
- - Time: Closing at 9pm means many parents have to leave evening classes early. (They should extend the hours.)
- ---
- Your response can be organized like this:
- 1 Introduction: summarize the announcement
- 2 State the speaker’s opinion
- 3 Lead-in: “She gives two reasons for her opinion.”
- 4 First reason: “Her first reason is that…”
- 5 Detail/example:
- 6 Second reason: “Her other reason…”
- 7 Detail/example:

- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Record your responses to the ETS Guide sample questions.
- Listen to your recordings and decide which one we can hear as a class.
- Listen to the sample responses. What’s good about each one? What could be improved?

- Writing Section: last section on the test, two tasks, 20 and 30 minutes of writing time, about 1 hour total
- 1 integrated: read a text, listen to a lecture about the same topic, write about the main points from the lecture and how they relate to points from the reading
- 2 independent: read a prompt (choice question), write about your opinion and your reasons for holding that opinion
- ---
- ETS 2.4 - Read about the portrait and Jane Austen
- R0 (main idea) = there are good reasons to believe the portrait is of Jane Austen
- R1 = the Austen family gave permission to use the portrait as a picture of Jane, whom they would likely recognize
- R2 = the portrait is similar to her sister Cassandra’s sketch of Jane as an adult
- R3 = the style is like Ozias Humphrey’s, who painted during the time Jane was a teenager and was the sort of artist her family would hire
- ---
- When the text takes a particular position (the portrait is Jane Austen) with specific details and reasons, the lecture will most likely oppose the points from the reading.
- (If it makes general statements about something, the lecture might give specific details to support the same thing.)
- ---
- Listen and take notes on the main ideas from the lecture.
- L0 = the reasons for believing it’s Jane are not good
- L1 = She’d been dead a long time by then, they wouldn’t have known what she looked like as a teenager
- L2 = It was a big family, so it could have been someone else who looked similar to Jane
- L3 = The style looks like Humphrey’s, but the canvas was sold by someone who didn’t start selling them in London until Jane was 27 years old.
- ---
- “Summarize the main points of the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to specific points made in the reading passage.”

- Writing “niece” as “neice” is incorrect, but won’t be confusing with a different word.
- Writing “niece” as “nice” is more confusing, because this is a different word and will interfere with understanding.
