- /NOVA ERA/ is the place to discuss Brazilian politics during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency.
- >BACKGROUND
- Jair Messias Bolsonaro is a Brazilian congressman and former military officer. He has served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies, representing the state of Rio de Janeiro, since 1991. In an unprecedented presidential run, spending significantly less than his adversaries, under constant fire from the mainstream media, and having survived an assassination attempt, Bolsonaro was elected by the popular vote to the presidency of Brazil. He will take office as the 38th president in January 1st 2019.
- Bolsonaro is a pro-gun, pro-life, conservative Catholic. He's looking to modernise the lethargic Brazilian economy with the aid of UChicago economist Paulo Guedes. He wants to align Brazil's foreign policy with Western nationalist governments against the influence of China, Eurasianism and Bolivarian socialism. He has a hard stance on crime and supports increasing the power of police forces and the army to tackle Brazil's drug and violence problems.

- >I'm in favor of a dictatorship. - 24 June 1993
- >The only mistake of the dictatorship was torturing and not killing. - 7 August 2008
- >The Military Police should have killed 1,000 rather than 111 prisoners in the Carandiru massacre. - 3 October 1997
- >Pinochet should have killed more people. - 3 December 1998
- >I'm in favor of torture. You know that. And the people are too. Through the vote, you'll change nothing in this country. Nothing, absolutely nothing. We'll only get change, unfortunately, when we go into a civil war here someday and do a work the military regime didn't do, killing as much as thirty thousand people, starting with FHC. It's all right if some innocent people die. Innocent people die in many wars. - 23 May 1999
- >There is no doubt. I would launch a coup on the same day. [Congress] doesn't work and I'm sure that at least 90% of the population would applaud. Congress nowadays does nothing; it votes only for what the president wants. If he's who rules, who decides and who gloats above the Congress, then let the coup be launched, let it be a dictatorship. - 23 May 1999
- >I defend torture. A drug dealer who acts on the streets against our children must to be immediately put on a pau-de-arara. There would be no human rights in this case. There would be pau-de-arara, beating. The same thing for kidnappers. The guy must to be broken to open his mouth. - 14 February 2000
- >I think execution by firing squad is even an honorable thing to certain people. - 14 February 2000
- >PSOL is party of dicks and faggots. I will respond to the senator with toilet paper. - 11 December 2014
- >They lost in 1964, and now they have lost in 2016. [...] To the memory of Colonel Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, the dread of Dilma Rousseff. - 17 April 2016
- >Jesus Christ was not totally passive. He drove the money changers from the temple. If he had a firearm, he'd have used it. - 18 August 2018
- >Brazil above all, God above everyone. - Campaign Slogan

- In Brazil, voting is mandatory. We are a multi-party democracy and the presidential election uses a two-round system. To be elected, the front-runner candidate must obtain 50%+1 votes in the popular vote. If no one succeeds in doing so, there is a second round with the two most voted candidates.
- PT's platform for Brazil openly discusses media control, judiciary control, and a new constitution. Historically PT has supported economic nationalism, state-owned enterprises, far reaching welfare, identity politics, gender theory, gun control, and 'humanised' law enforcement. During PT's rule, violence and political corruption rose to record highs.
- Corporate financing is no longer allowed for political campaigns. Instead, parties receive funds from the government according to how much representation they have in Congress. The larger parties receive more funds. TV exposure is also determined by this rule - big parties have more seconds to run their ads.
- This scenario makes Bolsonaro's campaign extraordinarily challenging. Bolsonaro's opinions and rejection of corruption schemes have turned him into a political loner. As a result, no big parties wanted to back him up. He's finally found his home in PSL, a small party that has quickly been adopted by other right-wing figures that support his candidacy. PSL's total budget for the campaign is U$275,000. For comparison, PT's budget is in the 7 figures.
