Background: Kang Minseong was born in Busan. He was an only child. His father was always travelling for work, so he and his mom never saw his dad much. He didn’t have a ton of friends during his childhood, and was bullied for being ugly. He was able to make friends by joining his school’s b-boy club when he was 10. From there, he didn’t look back. When he was 14, he and his mom moved to Holmes Chapel, Cheshire in the UK (his dad would come live with them when he had time off) and he adopted the English Name “Matthew”. There, he met friends who also like breakdancing. They started a breakdancing team, and performed together for 4 years. When Minseong was 17.5 years old, the team won a national teen breakdancing competition, and received attention from British media. Minseong was spotted by a scout from JYP Entertainment, and was asked to attend an audition for the company in Busan. Shortly after his 18th birthday, Minseong and his mom went to Busan, and he auditioned by doing a mixture of b-boying, modern dance and hip hop dance. Impressed with his skill, JYP accepted him as a trainee.
