  1. HELP - Need assistance transferring hosting from DreamHost to HawkHost
  2. I need some help transferring hosting from DreamHost to HawkHost. I originally purchased DreamHost hosting but had issues with the site being down a number of times over the course of a few days. During that period I started building my WordPress site. Because of the issues I decided to transfer hosting to HawkHost. I spoke to their support team via ticket before I made the decision and they made the process sound easy.

  15. After signing up with HawkHost I tried to have the site migrated but the HawkHost team told me I need to provide access to my Cpanel so they could generate full cPanel backup. After contacting DreamHost I was told they don't support or work with cPanel. Now HawkHost is telling me I need to migrate the domains manually from my end. I have absolutely no idea how to do this. Can anyone help me?
  16. What control panel did you use at dreamhost? Or there was no control panel at all?
  17. It's called DreamHost Control Panel. When I contacted them about a cPanel here was their response:
  18. "We don't support or work with cPanel. Our web panel gives access to everything needed to work on hosting the sites and accessing them to be edited"
  19. Moving from Dreamhost is a bit of a pain because they use their own in house control panel. You'll need to download the files via FTP and the mysql database used by the Wordpress installation. Once that's done upload the files at your new provider and restore the database.
  20.
  21. Edit: Found a link that might help you https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/...ackup-my-data-
  22. Using a plugin such as Duplicator would likely be easiest for you. You just then need to upload the installer and zip to hawkhost's server, setup a mysql database, and run the installer file.
  23.
  24. EDIT: hawkhost should be able to help setting up the database and uploading the files via either FTP or their file manager if you are not sure how.
  25. That doesn't sound right. When you asked HawkHost surely they know DreamHost does not support cPanel and therefore they would know a manual transfer would be needed. If the salesperson got that wrong then that is not good and @TonyB should be notified about it which I have just done for you.
  26.
  27. It is not too difficult for hosting provider to do a manual transfer, and if their pre-sales gave the wrong information by mistake then I am sure they can make an exception and do the manual transfer for you.
  28. Thanks all! HawkHost said they can do the upload but that I need to download the files from DreamHost. I must admit that it seems like there might be a language issue (maybe service center is in another country) in the responses to the tickets from HawkHost. I am trying to download them now on the WebFTP section but when I click "Download" nothing is showing up in my Download folder (or anywhere else for that matter). Which files do I need?
  29. HawkHost should be able to do this for you..
  30.
  31. This might be a little easier for you. https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/...ntire-account-
  32.
  33. Once you've downloaded everything from dreamhost's control panel send it to Hawk Host for them to get restored on their server.
  34. Hawk host should mange that all make it clear that you need a migration and Once you have your hosting account with them they would just need the login details of your hosting account you currently have. Once they have that information they will migrate your account. should not matter if there are more manual steps involved or not a provider should make it as painless and as easy as possible for the new client to develop a level of trust with the client because you chose them over others any way just try again make it clear it should go ok.
  35. Download a copy of your files via FTP or the control panel at DreamHost.
  36. Download a copy of your databases - likely via DreamHost's control panel.
  37. Upload your files to HawkHost
  38. In the HawkHost cPanel -> MySQL Database Wizard -> Create a new database, database user.
  39. Modify the `wp-config.php` file to match the new MySQL Database details.
  40. Import the databases via cPanel -> phpMyAdmin.
  41. You'll need to recreate email accounts and such.
  42.
  43. This really isn't a hard thing to do - but it is manual and is usually best handled by the webmaster/one that set it up and manages it.
  44. I gave HawkHost my login info to my DreamHost account but they said they could not do it.

  57. ok ask them to clarify "could not" the process is exactly how @MikeDVB outlined above I find it hard to believe Hawkhost can not handle a site migration for a client especially since you seem uncomfortable doing it yourself did they give a reason ?
  58. and when we say files we mean wordpress directory ect...
  59. Thanks! Here is the response I got back from HawkHost when I sent them my login info for DreamHost:
  60.
  61. "I am unable to find an option to generate the full cPanel backup. Please note that we only provide full cPanel migration from our end. We would be requiring a full cPanel backup to migrate your account. If the control panel that you are using is a cPanel, I would recommend asking your old hosting provider to generate a full cPanel backup from their end. You may update us once they have generated the same."
  62. Dream Host does not use cpanel so you have to do it manually sounds to me like they do not want to help you do it manually which is a Honest shame regardless follow the advice they gave you and see if dreamhost is willing to help you am not so sure

  65. They could do it, sure. Do they have to do it? No.
  66.
  67. That said - if they refuse and this is a critical matter there are plenty of providers that will do manual transfers. Some for free, some for a fee.
  68.
  69. Realistically the process is so simple that if I were the webmaster I'd just get it done. I understand based on the OP's post they aren't very experienced but I'm sure they can sort it .
  70. I hope so it should really be a non issue on a non complicated site I understand transfers provided as a courtesy. There is no guarantee however I believe the provider should always give a best effort the fact that hawk host is not even trying or willing to try is troubling
  71. They're not doing something they never promised they would do. There's nothing troubling about that IMHO.
  72.
  73. If HawkHost doesn't meet the client's expectations there are a lot of other providers out there .
  74. It still feels certainly bare minimum they are well within there right but considering the OP is a client who unhappy with the other provider i would do everything in my reasonable power to help make their transition as seamless as possible and if hawk host unwilling to even attempt to help in any technical way with a common problem makes me wonder what they would do for a more sustainable issue I wish the OP luck! as mike side there are plenty pf other providers that will help you have a look at the offer thread perhaps? look for smaller but well known companies ones that are more active around here sometimes smaller companies provide better one on one service

  76. Sorry for the trouble and confusion here. An overwhelming majority of transfers we do are from other cPanel based hosts and in those scenarios transfers are very simple since cPanels native tools make the process almost entirely automated.
  77.
  78. With non-cPanel transfers we will help with any issues you encounter or errors getting the site setup on our servers. The reason clients are asked to handle the migration if it's not cPanel based is you / your webmaster are far more familiar with the site(s) and configuration. With that said I do understand if you're not comfortable with that or if you don't have a webmaster/developer you can lean on for help in these scenarios. Now in your case with it being WordPress based our team should be able to assist. One option would be to use the WordPress export tool (https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/), another would be to use the Duplicator plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/) that was mentioned earlier in this thread. Lastly another option would be to install WordPress through us via Softaculous in cPanel and then have our team import your existing WordPress database into the new installation on our servers.
  79.
  80. If you PM me your ticket ID I can follow up on that and make sure this migration does get completed if it hasn't been already. Either way I do apologize for the confusion and will be happy to answer any other questions you have, either here in this thread, via PM, or in a support ticket through our helpdesk.
  81. Thanks all! I received a message from HawkHost...they did finally migrate my website. However, when I asked them to confirm site was completely moved and that I could cancel my DreamHost account, they stated the following:
  82.
  83. "Hello,
  84. We have migrated yourwebsite to your account with us. You can update the nameservers to as follows
  85. ns1.hawkhost.com
  86. ns2.hawkhost.com
  87. Or else you can update the A record assigning the IP XXX.XX.XXX.XXX at the external nameserver end so that the domain resolves to our server.
  88. Let us know if you need any further assistance."

  101. Those changes need to be done at your domain registrar. If you are unsure you can provide the hosting provider with login details to where your domain is registered and they can make the changes for you.
  102. @pmsmith2032 now that this has been done I suggest continuing working with @BrianFarrell as he is indeed a member of Hawkhost
